NEW YORK -- A New York City health department inspector bizarrely slapped a Brooklyn bagel shop with $1,650 in fines -- because sesame and poppy seeds fell to the floor while the bagels were being made during working hours.
The owner of B&B Empire Bagel Cafe -- who appealed the violations and lost at two separate hearings -- said the inspectors must have holes in their heads.

In Russia they call it “corruption”.
Here we call it liberalism “gone mad”.
Folks, remember this — THERE IS A HIGH COST OF DOING BUSINESS IN PLACES LIKE NEW YORK CITY ( what this regulatory atmosphere does for jobs in general is anyone’s guess ).
Insufficient melanin or simply wrong party registration?
Whoo boy what a quote!
“If you want to work, you have to pay. In Russia, they call it corruption. Here, they call it something else. Either way, you have to pay.”
Folks, remember this THERE IS A HIGH COST OF DOING BUSINESS IN PLACES LIKE NEW YORK CITY ( what this regulatory atmosphere does for jobs in general is anyones guess ).
His real crime is being an independent businessman.
You beat me to it. My thoughts exactly. And it’s only going to get worse.
It makes jobs for the regulators, of course.
Jobs for people, people for jobs.
If he was obammma’s uncle I doubt if this guy would be getting the same treatment.
must be the bagel shop from Seinfeld where Kramer spent 13 years on strike
At least in Russia, once you pay the protection money, you get the protection. Here, after OSHA’s done with you, the EPA shows up, then DOJ, then the city inspectors, then the guys from the state EPA - you’re never free of yet one more bite of your business.
“They don’t let you live!”
And people think I’m exaggerating or going over the top when say we live under Despotism here. I can assure you I am not.
They are short on tax money...
They will collect, one way or the other.
The only way out is to leave and open your business in a friendly state.
Next candidate to exit NYC.
Folks, remember this THERE IS A HIGH COST OF DOING BUSINESS IN PLACES LIKE NEW YORK CITY ( what this regulatory atmosphere does for jobs in general is anyones guess ).

The Great Oppression
You got that right. Some years ago when my husband was putting up his car repair building, he had to jump through hoop after hoop. Departments contradicting each other too. The water/sewer could have been hooked up 1/2 block east at no cost to us but the city insisted it be hooked up 1/2 block west which cost $9,000. No reason, just because. They insisted we put a retention pond in at the west side of the property even though the water ran down the road in the easterly direction. Ok, whatever you say. Now years later we want to sell the building and they say, “the water isn’t flowing to the retention pond, you need to put in a dry well”!! It’s a wonder anybody even bothers to open a business.
