A female defense attorney, who is not Muslim, wore the traditional Islamic hijab to the military court staging the trial of five Guantanamo Bay prisoners accused of the September 11 attacks yesterday.
Cheryl Bormann, 52, who represents Walid bin Attash, said that her client had demanded she wear the clothing and insisted that other women at the hearing also wear appropriate clothes out of respect for his religion.
Today she explained her decision at Guantanamo Bay, saying she always wears the hijab around her client.
She asked that other women follow her example so that the defendants do not have to avert their eyes for fear of committing a sin under their faith, according to Fox News.
The lawyers decision was one of the less controversial moments during Saturdays hearing where at times the accused openly defied the court.
Defense: Cheryl Bormann appeared in court wearing traditional Islamic dress out of respect for her client Walid bin Attash Self-proclaimed mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, wearing a turban and white tunic, refused to answer the judges questions.
Mohammed had been asked if he was satisfied with his U.S. military and civilian lawyers.
I believe hes deeply concerned about the fairness of the proceeding, said his civilian lawyer, David Nevin.
Proceedings were further delayed as one of the defendants, Waleed bin Attash, appeared while being restrained in his chair.
The restraints were later removed after defense counsel had given assurances that he would behave.
Another defendant, Ramzi Binalshibh, stood up, then knelt on the courtroom floor and prayed for several minutes as a row of guards in camouflage uniforms kept a close watch.
Mohammed and his co-defendants could all face the death penalty.
They have been accused of seven charges stemming from the 2001 attacks that killed 2,976 people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
The devastation resulted in the U.S. embarking on a deadly, costly and ongoing global war against al Qaeda and its supporters.
The families of six victims killed in the attacks were at court witnessing the trial while other victims families were able to watch proceedings via close-circuit TV.
In any case, this woman attorney is a total flake in the mold of now deceased Palestinian activist Rachel Corrie. What alternative universe does she inhabit?
Your fellow FReepers would love for you to audition!
But seriously, just what is it about Islam that teaches men to fear & loathe the beauty of woman? Any answers out there?
there’s a call for a bikini protest outside of a mosque if ever I’ve heard one...
I’d suggest everyone enjoy a BLT lunch and pulled pork buffet before the hangin’.
Exactly if being able to see will cause these morons to sin, then “out with their eyes.” Take their heads off too, both of them, that way one won’t cause the other one to sin.
This man thinks our system gives him the power to humiliate both women and men by demanding woman in his presence are dressed in a manner demeaning to their humanity and beliefs because his belief that woman are made to be humiliated are supposedly “religious.” This a a power play, it is all about inflicting humiliation and gaining power for archaic chauvinistic sharia/islamic ideology. We’ve outlawed this type of bigotry in our country and should not be bamboozled into allowing those who have not caught up, to inflict upon us that which is morally and humanly wrong. Islam teaches men to be arrogant, domineering and hateful. Christianity teaches men to humble and enlightened, it teaches compassion and forgiveness to both men and women. Christianity teaches that men (and women) are better then their animal instincts, while islam reinforces inhuman, beastly behavior in men towards woman, children and other men whom they deem to be less then them.
Agree. Misogynist chauvinistic bigots should not have the right to dictate how women dress. They should be forced to take a class in sensitivity and respect toward modern western Judeo-Christian society, as well as being blindfold when in the presence of woman who are not their family. Though removing their eyes below their necks seems the better choice.
Looks like her Linkedln page no longer exists.
I would be dressing like a serious vamp carrying a pig skin purse and Koran for the trial. I would sit and quietly shred the pages of the Koran.
This post is no good without pictures!
That's why you're not an attorney. You don't recognize an advertising opportunity when you see it. What, you think this is about law? Bwahahahaha!
