Giant cannibal shrimp more than a FOOT long invade waters off Gulf Coast
Daily Mail ^ | 21:48 EST, 26 April 2012 | Daily Mail Reporter

A big increase in reports of Asian tiger shrimp along the U.S. Southeast coast and in the Gulf of Mexico has federal biologists worried the species is encroaching on native species' territory.

The shrimp are known to eat their smaller cousins, and sightings of the massive crustaceans have gone up tenfold in the last year, biologists say.

One species of shrimp eating another is no more cannibalism than a hawk eating a pigeon, but I guess it sounds scary.

Unless you are allergic to them. One shrimp will send me to the hospital.

I had the same allergy since childhood, and also to crab and lobster. One night around 30 years ago I was playing and emceeing an upscale wedding, and the waiters kept walking around all night with trays of the most succulent jumbo shrimp. I couldn't resist, ate a whole bunch, and could barely breathe when I went up for my next set.

Somehow, the allergy went away after that. Today I can eat all the lobster and shrimp I want.

Funny thing, about four years ago I pigged out on lobster one summer when a local restaurant that was going out of business ran a special on twin lobsters. I ate that for dinner there about four nights a week all summer, and had Papa Gino lobster rolls across the street for lunch.

After that summer, I kind of lost my taste for lobster, and almost never eat it anymore. But I'm still not allergic.

>> And this is a real problem, because?

Biodiversity, man!

In much the same way as it is preferable to water Kalifornia smelt rather than raise food crops — or better to preserve West Texas lizards rather than heat our homes and fuel our cars — why, it’s better to have scrawny plankton-sized native shrimp than to have big, tasty Asian shrimp. Biodiversity uber alles! ;-)

You do know what those veggies are grown in, right?

Poop and decayed animals and vegetation.

And water, every mouth full you take was at some point inside an animal.

Sometimes it is best not to think too much about things.

Otherwise you start trying to live on sunlight and you die.

Did someone say something about, "giant fawking prawn?" Yum yum.

I said during the whole movie, "if they would just get a big 200 gallon drum of boiling water going, some oversized potatoes, jumbo corn on the cob, a fave gallon bucket of Old Bay and some of those prawns right there ... we could have us one helluva frogmore stew boil in no time and be rid of them pesky District 9 aliens." Let this be a lesson for the future.

I was in the seafood importing biz for 25 years...there are probably thirty varieties of “tiger” shrimp — some quite good, some quite garbagy.

An "invasive species" that does not want to be delicious? Hell, they are Mexican prawns coming up through, what else, wait for it .... the Gulf of Mexico, don't ya know? They have a king, his name is Pepe' le Prawn ...

... and yes, like all invasive Mexicans, they do not want to be eatin', they want to do the eatin'.

I would rather eat sh*t and die (die of old age after eating plants grown in sh*t and eating animals that eat plants grown in sh*t)

Animanals are Tasty!

(I purposely mis-spelled animals~)

If we aren’t supposed to eat animals, why are they made of meat?

Hmmm... I’ve had hearts, and kidneys, and livers, and tongues, and pancreases, and thymus glands, and even testicles.

But I’ve never tried THAT part of an animal.

Tiger shrimp are flat out one of the better tasting shrimp.

Our local 'wild caught' are great too - so long as there no Trisodium phosphate involved. That chemical 'plumps up the shrimp' so it retains water - making it weigh more, but takes away the nice texture and taste of natural shrimp...

Unless the tiger shrimp is killing off most of the native shrimp - this seems like a good thing for those who like to eat shrimp. As opposed to liberals who like to worship native born anything...
