EARLIER this month, Mitt Romney delivered a speech at the annual National Rifle Association convention, calling for a president “who will stand up for the rights of hunters, sportsmen and those seeking to protect their homes and their families,” presumably with guns. I’d like to remind Mr. Romney that those are distinct groups. Too often — especially during an election year — hunters and N.R.A. members are lumped together as one and the same.
I’m a hunter and a sportswoman. I own guns, but not for self-defense. I support gun control laws. I would happily vote to repeal the Stand Your Ground law in my home state of Oregon. In other words, the N.R.A. does not represent me.
Among gun owners, I’m hardly alone. The N.R.A. has just over four million members. That sounds like a lot until you consider that about one in five American adults own one or more guns. That’s nearly 50 million people. That means roughly 90 percent of gun owners do not belong to the N.R.A.
Let’s say, for argument’s sake, that every N.R.A. member is also a hunter — which is highly unlikely, considering that the most comprehensive national survey of firearm ownership to date found that only 35 percent of gun-owning households say they hunt. Even then, the N.R.A. would represent only about one-third of all hunters in the United States.

In a sense, I agree with this lib from the NYTimes - I'm not a hunter but I put the right to bear arms only after the right to life in my voting priorities.

I pulled my NRA membership when the NRA putzes endorsed every single commie Dem incumbent NM congressman in the 2010 elections.

We have members at my Sporting/Shooting Club that think like this. Usually spout some claptrap about, “Who needs a pistol for self-defense?” and “Those damned yahoos with Assault weapons will get all our rights taken away one day”
We like to call them “Golfers with Guns” or “Jim Zumbo Zombies”.
Anyone care to bet that the government will not use the NRA subscription list to find out who the gun owners are?

They do so because they can affect demos votes as well as Repubs. We don’t always have a Republican Congress and their role as a bi-partisan organization has been very effective.
So. I am a member and will continue to be so for the rest of my life.

Our job as NRA members is to call the NRA leadership on the carpet when they do something that is against the charter and best interest of the group. The NRA is a single issue memberhips that supports those who are 2dA supporters, even some Democrats fall into that category. When the NRA supports those few, they typically catch some flak but for the most part the membership is silent. That is the real tragedy. Every member of the NRA should call the leadership to task and make certain that they are playing with fire and that throwing support to Democrats NEVER works.
Write to the magazine of your choice and pitch a fit. Contact other members and petition to have that support withdrawn. The wrong answer is to let your membership lapse. You can only fix a problem when you become part of the solution.

Funny. I am just the opposite. I support NRA (and am a member). I support gun rights, but I don’t hunt.
Why not? I don’t feel like going out in the woods when it is crowded with other hunters. I sympathize with the animals. Call me foolishly tender-hearted!
I am not against hunting: it needs to be done. We have too darn many deer. I will eat some venison if offered, and I have been known even to salvage road kill (if it is fresh enough). It’s just that I am not sure that I would enjoy pulling the trigger with a deer in my sights. Let someone else do that.

Good point. I upgraded to a Life Membership when Obama was elected. The only problem is that now they're -always- calling with pleas for more money. Oh well... :-)
