If I were a Black man I would be ashamed.

Anyone who believes it's not appropriate to have a written test for officers and engineers is stupid.

There is a written test for every rank above E-3 in the military...will that be next?

If it weren’t for quotas and preferential hiring for minorities in the first place, they probably wouldn’t even be working for the department.

Apparently if it is to their advantage, there is no shame. Rather people die because of incompetence then test for competence.

Hey, if you’re the right color, and you can fog a mirror, you’ve got the job, baby!

You're right. Are they ever going to have to read:

An operating manual for any of the gear they have/use? You know, little things like the fire engine, air breathing system, radios, GPS, AEDs, power saws, hydraulic assist tools, pneumatic lifts...

A training plan? You know, this is not a field where you want people learning on the job, doping it out as they go.

An emergency management coordination plan with other agencies for natural and/or man-made disasters?

If they can't handle reading a test, then they can't handle the required reading to be proficient at their job - good riddance. Yeah, I'm normally an easy going guy. But on this I cut people zero slack. These are literally life-and-death positions. No room for "good enough" here.

So the government employee “Union” is accused of unfairly discriminating against black members in testing assistance....so somehow that is the fault of the City?

err...Am I the only one who perceives a logical disconnect?

In New Jersey, they cut out the multiple choice testing because it was determined they were discriminatory to minorities. They went the essay route. This allows absolute discretion.

How can a test discriminate against a race?

You either know what you are suppose to or you don’t. You either understand the information or you don’t. You either know how to read or you don’t.

I know numbers better than my own language, either that’s by genetics or it’s own lack of attention. Either way nobody will confuse me for an English professor. Should someone give me help because of either condition.. of course not.

That is the true issue and it disgusts me.

So, is AG Eric Holder making the case that requiring “his people” to read and understand what they read is RACIST? What is this moron smoking?

All candidates should be able to read and understand what they read. Since the tests are multiple choice, the candidates do not have to prove they can write. If that was the case, would the test be twice as racist?

In the lawsuit, the firefighters alleged union officials unfairly shared exam questions with white workers but not with black workers ahead of the test.

This is a new twist. It seems they are not sueing because there are tests as such, but because they didn't get to cheat like some others did! Now that takes some balls!

This suit should be laughed out of court because there is no right to equal treatment for an illegal action (cheating).

And whoever cheated should be fired.

From what I can read it’s about “HOW” the department used the tests, not about their general use as a benchmark.

It seems like any test which can be objectively marked, from the firefighting exam to the SATs, is discriminatory.
