The song that was most associated with
Mac Davis was recorded by a variety of artists on albums, but it was a pop group with no connection to country music that had the hit single in 1972.

Every time I think I have a handle on the time signature, he goes somewhere else with it. Must be tough for the percussion man.

Its at this point that
Chips Moman drops out of the story. He operated a number of studios in a number of cities over the years, but he never came close to the work he did with Alex Chilton and Elvis Presley. In 1972, his swan song with Presley brought
Mark James and Wayne Carson together (with John Christopher) for their last hit. James disappeared from the music scene. Carson would write and record for many years, but he produced nothing like this standard. First, Elvis recorded it.
Elvis Presley: Always on My Mind
In 1982, Willie Nelson made this song immortal. This version just breaks your heart.
Willie Nelson: Always on My Mind
Then in 1987, who should tackle this song but a British New Wave group, who did an outstanding job of it. When you write a song this good, even a totally unconventional arrangement can work like magic. This rendition is amazing, even if its not what Carson and James envisioned.
Pet Shop Boys: Always on My Mind
That's it for tonight. In the next few weeks, Ill explore the performing careers of Mac Davis and Eddie Rabbitt and how they laid the foundations of Hot Country.
