ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - Two members of the U.S. Coast Guard were found shot to death at an air base on Kodiak Island in Alaska on Thursday, and the installation was placed on a security alert, the Coast Guard said.

The two were found dead at a communications facility at the Coast Guard Base Support Unit Kodiak, and authorities were looking for a potential suspect who might be at large, according to a Coast Guard statement.

Because circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear, the Coast Guard said the base, located about 250 miles southwest of Anchorage, was placed on lockdown as a precaution, as were nearby schools in the area.

What kind of a nut commits murder on an island?
The polulation is around 13000. What little info they provide about the place makes it sound like transportation on or off the island is NOT a bus every fifteen minutes...

Ask any cop and they will tell you that lovers quarrels between homosexuals are the most nasty violent and deadly.

With no more DADT this is going to happen a lot.

I wonder if this is yet another “Base” where only the bad guys get to be armed?

Nope. In fact many people around the base are armed as well. It's not Disneyworld up there.

I recently caught that show on the Weather Channel about the Coast Guard - they showed them picking up some hunters who had gotten in trouble, and they allowed the hunters to bring their rifles on board the Coast Guard helicopter. It didn't seem to bother the Coasties, but then again, there were several references in another show to the Coasties being hunters and fishermen as well.

It’s odd because a “communications facility” is usually a secure building.

Given the location and that it was Coast Guard, I'm guessing it's where they handle calls from ships/people in distress, which is not exactly national security. They do a helluva lot of rescues up in that region.

Now if it had been an Air Force "communications facility", that's a completely different story...

I should add, that had it been an Air Force “communications facility”, we probably would not have heard it referred to as that, it probably would have been referred to as just a building on a base.

The victims were found at their work areas inside the Kodiak Island station early Thursday by another Coast Guard member, spokeswoman Sara Francis said.

While the roughly 60 enlisted personnel and civilians working at the station had been accounted for, Francis said, officials believe a third person was involved in the shooting.

It would still be secured, because of the nature of the equipment inside. Even the radio room on a CG cutter is a secure space.

True, but I was just thinking in terms of it not being some kind of super-secret facility for listening in on the Russians.

I got off the phone an hour ago after talking with wifes son who lives in Kodiak. He is ok, knows one of the victims who was an adjunct professor at the college there. The lockdown has been lifted and the word on the street is that LEOs caught the doer at the airport. Also, that it may have been about someones dog biting someones child. Must be an extra long winter there. It is odd where it happened. That is a
‘secure’ area, as are most communications shops.

Since you speak with such authority, are we to believe that you are familiar with the homosexual community on Kodiak Island? Otherwise, do you have proof that we are not privy to?

Not offended. The last murder involving Coast Guard personnel was actually a lover's quarrel, course it was one guy sleeping with another guy's wife. I just wasn't sure if you were somebody looking to take potshots at the military like some do - that doesn't seem to be the case though.
