Obama on Reagan: a ‘wild-Eyed, Socialist, Tax-Hiking Class Warrior'
ABC News ^ | April 11, 2012 | Olivier Knox

Posted on 04/11/2012 2:25:32 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Today's Republicans might view Ronald Reagan as a "wild-eyed, socialist, tax-hiking class warrior," and the late conservative icon's views on taxes might have disqualified him from the party's nomination in 2012, President Barack Obama said Wednesday.

Obama, defending his "Buffett Rule" call for higher taxes on the very rich, said in a speech that he was "not the first president to call for this idea that everybody has got to do their fair share." He went on to say:

Some years ago, one of my predecessors traveled across the country pushing for the same concept. He gave a speech where he talked about a letter he had received from a wealthy executive who paid lower tax rates than his secretary, and wanted to come to Washington and tell Congress why that was wrong. So this President gave another speech where he said it was 'crazy'--that's a quote--that certain tax loopholes make it possible for multimillionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying 10 percent of his salary. That wild-eyed, socialist, tax-hiking class warrior was Ronald Reagan.

He thought that, in America, the wealthiest should pay their fair share, and he said so. I know that position might disqualify him from the Republican primaries these days but what Ronald Reagan was calling for then is the same thing that we're calling for now: a return to basic fairness and responsibility; everybody doing their part. And if it will help convince folks in Congress to make the right choice, we could call it the Reagan Rule instead of the Buffett Rule.

Reagan was conservative, on the money and where he had to be at that point in time. Today, he would have to be Santorum to counter the assinine things Obama is saying. Ronald Reagan was perfect for the time. Today, jackasses like Obama would shout him down.

Obama is saying the exact opposite of what Reagan would have done, trying to make him non-consequential, because Reagan woould beat Obama hands down in a one to one race.

It kinda reminds me of when Mohammed Ali was asked about Joe Lewis and a bunch of other fighters and how he would have done against him. He was okay and had a retort against every one until they came to Rocky Marchiano. He said I don’t know about him. So it is with Obama and Reagan. He doesn’t know about him.

Romney is a nothing. The election will come and go and Obama will still be there. Match him against Reagan and he’d be packing his suitcases now. Romney has nothing different to offer and people will say to themselves ‘why change’. Just watch!

Back in those days almost everyone paid taxes, now half the country doesn’t and complains the other half isn’t paying enough.

WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

Obsama really thinks this way.

“Back in those days almost everyone paid taxes, now half the country doesn’t and complains the other half isn’t paying enough.”

I was around then, paying taxes, but I can’t remember when half the country was exempted from paying taxes. Who did that?

I thought everyone had to pay social security and medicare, 15.3% from the first dollar earned. Unless it is “unearned income”, of course.

The way I remember Ronald Reagan is that he did his best to be fiscally responsible. He raised taxes when he felt that it would help. In his 1986 tax reform bill, he raised rates on capital gains to 28%, the same rate that the highest earners paid on their income.

“Everyone remembers Reagan’s 1981 tax cuts. His admirers are less likely to tout the tax hikes he accepted as the 1981 recession and his own tax cuts began to unravel his long-term fiscal picture—a large tax increase on business in 1982, higher payroll taxes enacted in 1983 and higher energy taxes in 1984.”
http://www.forbes.com/2010/02/02/barack-obama-ronald-reagan-budget-taxes-opinions-contributors-rob-shapiro.html

“While many commentators have focused on President George H.W. Bush and his infamous decision to raise taxes in 1990, an equally important, though often neglected, example is President Ronald Reagan, who agreed to raise taxes in 1982, 1983, and 1986.” http://articles.cnn.com/2011-05-09/opinion/zelizer.reagan.taxes_1_tax-cuts-tax-increases-support-tax-reform?_s=PM:OPINION

“The first Reagan tax increase came in 1982. By then it was clear that the budget projections used to justify the 1981 tax cut were wildly optimistic. In response, Mr. Reagan agreed to a sharp rollback of corporate tax cuts, and a smaller rollback of individual income tax cuts. Over all, the 1982 tax increase undid about a third of the 1981 cut; as a share of G.D.P., the increase was substantially larger than Mr. Clinton’s 1993 tax increase.” http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/08/opinion/the-great-taxer.html

It's very stupid to go around quoting and politicizing deceased Presidents. It shouldn't be done on either side. They have no way of defending their words. This is shameful.

Fine. If Reagan era tax rates are good enough for you, then so should Reagan era spending levels.

I wouldn’t count on Obama being stopped in November. Not with all of the “so-called” conservatives that will refuse to vote against Obama by voting for Romney....just as they refused to vote for McCain.

We’re about to witness yet another 2008-style trajedy for America. And I seriously don’t think we will survive the ‘next’ four years.

WRONG! We voted for SARAH and we WILL vote for Newt and NEVER mitt. Why would you suggest a thing as a vote for lying POS mitt?

It laughable to even suggest maggot mitt could beat barry. Mitt hasn't even been vetted yet - ONLY by those who support Newt he has.
