Does anyone here keep their grocery receipts from a long time? I'm curious to know if anyone has seen obvious cases of inflation at the grocery store.
I was out this morning and just paid $2.99 for a gallon of 2% milk and saw that a gallon of regular gas was $4.35.9. Guess I got lucky.
The government readjusted the method of measuring inflation. Does anybody have a way of using the old measures and what the REAL rate of inflation is??
What?
It also seems to me that there is less on the roll. It runs out very quickly. I don't think it's just the width of the roll. It seems like the paper is wound more loosely - more air.
Last one I saw was 1.5 quarts.
Prices on EVERYTHING has gone up, and many packages have gone smaller (if the price hasn't gone up much).
I do. I keep my gas receipts too. I think I cleaned them out last year, but I might have some from a year or so back.
Peanut Butter - Price more than doubled in less than a year
Coffee - Price for 33 ounce (once was 3 pounds) up from around $4.99 to $8.99 or more in about 12 - 18 months year.
I’m paying a $1.98/gallon for milk at Sam’s. That’s one thing that hasn’t sky rocketed...yet.
Another annoyance, when things go up they go up 50-100%. My husband and I used to get a Me&Ed’s 3 topping $10 lunch pizza, with jalapenos and ranch dressing for dipping. It just went up to $15, and it is extra for the dip and jalapenos.
Gas prices have gone up significantly, so naturally the items brought to stores by truck will go up in price.
And often the sizes of the items go down instead of their price.
I do keep receipts for about six months, just a bad habit and a convenient place to toss them (an old punch bowl). About twice a year they start to overflow it and then they go...I dunno! But they go away. :)
Walmart announced last week that next year they will absorb $1 Billion in profits next year due to inflation.
I obviously didn’t phrase the above correctly......
NEW YORK — Walmart Stores Inc. plans to lower its grocery prices by $1 billion this year in hopes that customers will be drawn in by the lower prices on food and also make purchases in other areas of the store, according to a Dow Jones Newswires report. The retail giant generated $145 billion in grocery sales last year.
The company referred to this new strategy as “investing in price,” meaning it will reduce prices and not pass on inflation to customers, instead lowering its own profit margins.

That's insane! On principle, buy the bagged store brand or go without.
Just going through my Sam’s receipts. We are in the Denver area.
Kellog’s Raisin Bran (double pack) July 2011 was $7.98. As of March 2012 it is $7.48. Not sure why it went down 50 cents unless the package got smaller. I don’t have the old one to compare.
Milk/gallon here right now is $1.98. Last May it was $1.95.
Frozen Orange Juice (6 pack of large) was $10.01 in June 2011. As of April 2012 it is $10.58—Member’s Mark.
Bacon (same brand this and last DAK) was $9.78 in June 2011. As of April 2012 it was $9.18. 60 cent drop? I believe it is still 3 pounds. Yep still 3 pounds.
Tang was $6.92 in November of 2011. Tang in January was $6.89. Same size.
Butter was $8.88 in January and then $7.38 in March for same size (1 pound X 4) and brand (Member’s Mark).
So some of the things that I buy regularly are about the same or have gone down in price. Not sure for the reason on that. The only thing I don’t know if the size has decreased is the raisin bran.
I think nuts have gone up—Walnuts, Pecans that I use for baking. Ground beef seems like it has gone up.
1/2 gallon of ice cream is now 1.75 quarts.
Last one I saw was 1.5 quarts.””
I have seen both sizes. The more expensive ice cream went down to 1 1/2 quarts.
Guess what, Obama-—that drop in prices at Wal-Mart leaves lots less TAXABLE income for you to squander.
...but...but...at 9.2 %, you only need to drink a little more than half as much! Still a good value. ;-P
Just ask anyone in a grocery store that does price changes.
I own a bread route, so I talk to them all the time. The price changers are saying that they can’t keep up. It use to be a part time job, and now it’s too much work for a full timer. In fact, one of them told me that he had to change over 1100 prices yesterday, he didn’t think he was going to get it done without staying late.
