Police incident report fills in details on Trayvon Martin shooting

A three-page police report published online Tuesday by the Chicago Tribune contains new details about the shooting death of Sanford, Fla. teenager Trayvon Martin. It discloses that George Zimmerman, who shot Martin on Feb. 26, was in custody on the scene and told police that he had tried, in vain, to find someone to help him with his own injuries.

(snip)

It also describes Zimmerman as “in custody” when Officer Ayala arrived on the scene. “Upon arrival Ofc. T. Smith had a white male, later identified as George Zimmerman, in custody,” Ayala wrote.

Officer Timothy Smith, in his written report, notes that “Zimmerman complied with all my commands and was secured in handcuffs.”

“Zimmerman was placed in the rear of my police vehicle and was given first aid. … I overheard him state ‘I was yelling for someone to help me, but no one would help me.’ … Once Zimmerman was cleared by the [Sanford Fire Department], he was transported to the Sanford Police Department.”

“Zimmerman was placed in an interview room at [Sanford Police Department], where he was interviewed by Investigator D. Singleton.”

The report also notes that officers on the scene administered CPR to Martin, but that fire department rescuers later confirmed his death.

Officer Ayala described Zimmerman’s alleged crime as a violation of Florida statute 782.11, titled “Unnecessary killing to prevent unlawful act.”

“Whoever shall unnecessarily kill another, either while resisting an attempt by such other person to commit any felony, or to do any other unlawful act, or after such attempt shall have failed, shall be deemed guilty of manslaughter, a felony of the second degree,” the law reads.

Well now we know where the media got the “white male” info. It is right there in the police report. They thought he was white.

Why did the officer write down the statute Zimmerman supposedly violated when he didn’t know what happened?

What confuses me about the police report is that it list 3 adult witnesses, yet an ABC news report yesterday named a 13 year old "Austin Brown" as a juvenile witness, and he is not included in the police report.

I found it odd that ABC listed the name of a juvenile, as I thought privacy rules prohibited this practice.

Only when they are victims, not perps or witnesses.

“Well now we know where the media got the “white male” info. It is right there in the police report. They thought he was white.”

Agreed. Sharpton and Jackson picked the wrong case. The first news report I find that identifies GZ as Hispanic was Miami Herald, The (FL) - March 14, 2012.

I wonder how many of the “white” witnesses are Hispanic?

This may get real ugly ...

GZ admitted he shot the subject, and was brought in for questioning under the said alleged charge???

The report, filed by Sanford police officer Ricardo Ayala, indicates that there were at least six witnesses — three men and three women — who saw or heard some part of the events that led to Martin’s death. They ranged in age from 19 to 56, and included five people described as “white.” The race of the sixth witness was listed as “O,” meaning “other.”

I also question ABC's decision to release the name of a minor witness.

Stupid freaking law. The author should be castrated and sent to Iraq.

Doesn't this law directly contradict the "Stand your Ground" law?

Florida statute 782.11 doesn’t apply if you are protecting yourself or the life of another.

No, the stand your ground simply means you do not have to withdraw when a person with possible violent intentions confronts you. You still can’t shoot someone breaking into your car. Not in Florida, anyway.

It’s an initial crime report, the officer lists an offense that seems to match his observations. It’s based on initial impression, and has little if any significance in the scheme of things.

Yeah, the operative word is “unnecessarily”. Killing someone to save yourself is a necessity.

In order to arrest someone a cop needs to specify the law he thinks a person violated. In various jurisdictions the report itself may or may not contain the law violated but the original report should include the law a person has been arrest for violating. Otherwise, imagine a defense attorney claiming the police went fishing.
