Santorum Says He Would Enforce US Obscenity Laws That Obama Ignores By NBC's Andrew Rafferty

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL -- Rick Santorum accused President Barack Obama of not enforcing the country's obscenity laws and said Friday that as chief executive he would crack down on illegal pornography.

Santorum found himself answering pornography questions during a stop at an Italian restaurant here after the discovery of a statement posted in his campaign website in which he asserts that "America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography." Recent reporting has shed light on the letter in which the former Pennsylvania senator vowed to "vigorously enforce" all the country's obscenity laws, though he said the statement was posted three weeks ago.

"We actually respond to questions that we get into our campaign when they say 'What are you going to do about these issues?' And when we respond we post them up on our website. And the response is, ‘we'll enforce the law,’" said Santorum.

"I don’t know what the hubbub about that is," he said. "We have a president who is not enforcing the law, and we will."

The candidate best known for espousing family values argues on his website that pornography causes changes in the brain to both children and adults, and contributes to violence against women, prostitution and sex trafficking. "The Obama administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography," he wrote.

Observing the posts of freepers who think pornography, including the sexual abuse of children is NOT a concern helps me understand how deep the moral decay in this country is.

If this kind of rampant, crime-inducing, sexist, abusive issue is not important to address, then what is?

The amorality of some who call themselves conservatives is frightening, since part of conservatism IS morality.

Santorum's first step should be to make the pornographers all speak English.

This is clearly a top priority for the next president!

Put another way, while I would not be surprised if a majority of the people who are into sadism and rape are also into porn, this is NOT the same as declaring that watching porn CAUSES you to become addicted to rape and torture.

“realize that pornography is a weapon of the cultural and political marxists in their war against America.”

THANK you for this!

It's alarming how many so-called conservatives are unaware that their own dismissal of moral issues is the result of the brainwashing of decades of communist propaganda in this country.

They have tried to destroy America by destroying its morals, and even among some conservatives, they have clearly succeeded.

Nobody here has been approving of child porn. Rick wasn't talking about child porn. The subject is porn involving consenting adults, and the point of many of us is that porn IS NOT the most pressing issue facing the US today, higher than illegal immigration, higher than the dangers of Islamic jihad, higher than the economy, etc.

I guess for me, these type of laws would be better held at the local level. There are quite a few laws on the books that I dont think rise to the level of government involvement.

Those activities arent what obscenity laws are for. Those are assault, coercion, kidnapping, and trafficking which are already illegal, and for good reason. They force an unwilling or unable to consent party into a harmful activity.

This is an actual plan. Because they have so much they can destroy Santorum with, that they are holding all of it until he gets the nomination.

Yeah, I know the left is salivating at the opportunity to run against a candidate who wouldn't be able to shut about why he thinks contraception is "not okay" and why we need a war on internet porn. It would be a dream come true for the Democrats who are so desperate to avoid talking about the economy that they have already taken great pains to manufacture this phony "war on women" talking point. If the Democrats could sit down in a lab and create their most ideal opponent, Rick Santorum would pretty much be it.

Access to porn is far easier for kids today than cigarettes, drugs or liquor, and just as damaging on it’s own. What a generation, obese, couch potatoes playing video games, drinking Red Bull and watching porn.

I think that if he meant “kiddie porn” he would have specified it up front. Every time Rick opens his mouth like this it hurts him.

You totally miss the point.

Pornography is a symptom of a bigger disease, it's true, but at the current moment, we have far bigger fish to fry; Like an economy on the verge of a total collapse due to out of control government.

The issue of promiscuity, etc, is stopped by parents, in the home while the children are developed. You cannot stop it after the fact. And Government cannot legislate it, or control it. (And has no business doing so.)

Look back on history at every society that has ever developed. Morality is at the very beginning of every society that grows and becomes great, and immorality, moral depravity, etc, is always at the very end, in the declining stages of all great societies.

In order for it to turn around, that society has to fail completely, to be rebuilt from the ground up. It is the way it HAS to work and especially, how it always HAS worked. There is no other solution.

The fact that Santorum believes that government can fix it, is typical of his ignorance. And is therefor, every reason why he can not, and should not gain the highest office on Earth. Anyone that clueless and misguided, deserves to lose and more importantly, should lose.

Obeying the law and enforcing the laws should be a priority for ALL Americans, and Obama's lawlessness is a very 'pressing issue.'

As for the 'consenting adults,' the majority of women in porn are there because they were abused as girls, or prostituted.

As much as amoralists would like to disassociate pornography from sexual abuse, it's directly related, and therefore a concern.

If Rick thinks he can get porn off the internet, he should also set his scope on ridding it of spam, viruses, and snarky liberal comments on Yahoo News.

Porno is WORLD wide, but I am sure Santo will gladly try to legislate that as well. Since he firmly believes that there should be no separation of Church and State.

In my 12+ years on Free Republic, I couldn't begin to count the number of posts I've seen that quote the communist goals for the United States as read into the Congressional Record back in 1963. Among these were:

21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."

23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

Rick understands that to "fundamentally transform" a nation, the left needs to first tear it down, or corrupt it beyond the point of viability so it can be remade in their own image.

One can complain about the pornification of the culture (including grade schools teaching children about fisting) without it defining a candidate as a “respressive” “extremist”.

I am curious about the person who posed the question to Rick. Do THEY consider it to be the most important topic of the campaign since he has not been making public speeches about it? Or did the questioner seek to make Rick define his position as being “against porn” to define his candidacy?

It’s more of the same smoke and mirrors distraction from the Left.

Dennis Miller and Micheal Berry and other center-right talk radio hosts claim that Santorum’s stance on same sex marriage makes it difficult to support his candidacy. His position is the same one that this country held for over 200 years. His is not the extremist stance on that issue. Those who would vote against him the general election over same sex marriage are the ones who would seek to define the 2012 race JUST over gay marriage.

I’m leaning to Newt so I’m not even in the Santorum boat now. Just pointing out the tactic where the Left is trying to define candidates (yet Obama was never the pro-death, killing babies outside of the womb candidate).

Didn’t NBC have a tv program where the whole gist of it was to snare sexual predators online?

What makes them run with the story that somehow Rick’s position is different that their own entrapment scheme?

That it should be A concern is not in question. The question is whether it's a good idea to have a Presidential campaign revolve around it as THE MAIN CONCERN. Because you know the MSM will make this issue be front and center for a Santorum candidacy if he wins the nomination.

Part of the President’s job is to enforce the law. If we have such laws on the books, then he should be enforcing them. And it would cut off a source of left-wing revenue, as you point out.

Access to premarital sex appears to be far easier for kids today. And I think most of the child porn floating around today, by volume, is likely to be from teen girls taking nude pics of themselves to send to their boyfriends.
