Newt Gingrich: Walking dead out of Alabama, Mississippi
The Washington Times ^ | March 14, 2012 | Jim Picht

Posted on 03/14/2012 3:11:51 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

NATCHITOCHES, La., March 14, 2012—It was a good night for Rick Santorum. It was not a good night for Mitt Romney. Newt Gingrich is a zombie.

President Obama might want to celebrate tonight’s election results in the morning with a nice bowl of grits for breakfast.

Gingrich’s southern strategy is dead, and so is his campaign. The only southerner in the race, he’s said all along that the South would help him to the nomination. ... He came in a close second in both, results that would be respectable if he had more wins to his credit. But he doesn’t. There’s no way Gingrich can spin the night’s results into victory.

Nor can Romney, but his campaign remains very much alive. The mathematics of the delegate race didn’t demand that he win – if he and Santorum traded results, the effect would be a gain of only seven delegates for Romney – but a victory in either state would have been a definite boost. He won some delegates, and if he wins Hawaii and American Samoa, as is widely expected, his delegate lead will grow, but the losses still hurt, and they illustrate a serious weakness.

Romney could have won in Mississippi, and even Alabama wasn’t out of reach. He had sufficient support on paper to win, and the spread between him and Santorum was actually quite narrow. Between him and Gingrich the gap was even narrower, and second-place would have been just fine. But his supporters weren’t sufficiently supportive to actually go out and vote. He showed, if anyone needed showing, that his support is a mile wide and an inch deep. His supporters preferred to stay home and watch CSI, and so Romney came in third.

You are so right. Its not a crime to stay in the race all the way to the end. I think conservatives (me included) just had a bellyful of getting drunk and voting for some mediocre candidate like McCain just to watch him lose. This year we just don’t want to cave in and do it again. I say let Newt stay in if he is willing to take the heat and lets take it to the convention and hash it out there. Every so many decades we need a good bloodletting to clear the air.

Besides, the only thing standing between Santorum and millions of dollars of negative Willard ads is Newt Gingrich.

Besides that you are wrong in your analysis regarding Santorum...

Your stating something does not make it true. Nice try tho.

... why are so many people calling the candidates with their first names? Mitt, Rick, Newt…

I don't know about others, but I do it b/c it's shorter yet obviously conveys the same meaning.

Are you folks trying to be cool and hip?

What are you talking about?

>> I am fairly stunned that they chose the Yankee Catholic over a Son of the South. <<

The "Son of the South" (Gingrich) was born and raised in Pennsylvania and is also a practicing Catholic. The "Yankee Catholic" was born in Virginia and lives there today.

I don’t care how you spin it ... if Rick Santorum gets the nod from the GOP ... it will be massive defeat. Rick Santorum is not ready for prime time and buyer’s remorse will own the day.

Santorum is not going to carry California, NY, Ohio, PA, Michigan and Florida in November, so good luck with that ole Electoral College thingy.

But keep dancing and celebrating your win.

We’ll be here for you when you sober up in December.

Have a blessed day.

The economy is positioned to crash ... with or without Obama in the White House.

The RNC-GOP-Establishment-RINOs or Whatever TF it is, does NOT WANT THE WH! They know it's all going to crash. They want it to be Obama's Fault while they use Romney and the money to win the House and the Senate. The pros call this the "Down Ticket" strategy.

Their theory is foolish. They actually think they can tie up Obama in a sort of replay of the Clinton deal when they got Welfare Reform passed. Obama with his czars and with his contrrol of the executive branch will simply buy the RINOs and complete his plan to bring Socialism to America.

The GOP is passing up a chance to save the country. That's all.

Interesting....guess we’ll know on Saturday.

Indeed curious.

According to the 'Sinclair News' website, they say they are giving Santorum another 72 hours to respond and that their "source(s) have solid records" with the news site. If there is anything to this, PMSNBC will probably be the first main stream news organ to run with it. They also speculate that Gingrich may know of the "Campaign ending dirt on Santorum" and he is waiting for the bad news to break and why he is staying in the race.

I'll keep an eye on what these guys have if anything.

“I don’t care how you spin it ... if Rick Santorum gets the nod from the GOP ... it will be massive defeat. Rick Santorum is not ready for prime time and buyer’s remorse will own the day.”

You’re welcome to your opinion, however divorced from reality it may be.

0bamney would be the definition of “buyer’s remorse”. Newt, bless his heart, has no chance whatever in the general. Gingrich has almost all of the drawbacks of McCain, without the positives (war hero, faithful husband).

“Santorum is not going to carry California, NY, Ohio, PA, Michigan and Florida in November, so good luck with that ole Electoral College thingy.”

I can’t speak for anywhere else, but Rick already polls ahead of 0bama in Ohio. Things are likely to change quite a bit for the better before election day regardless.

“But keep dancing and celebrating your win.

Heh, we’ll see about all that. November is what matters, no?

“Have a blessed day.”

You as well.

'They know it's all going to crash. They want it to be Obama's Fault while they use Romney and the money to win the House and the Senate. The pros call this the "Down Ticket" strategy.'

First off, the economic plan of either Santorum or Gingrich would turn the US economy around effectively within four years. That would probably bring back the world economy as well. It would be clear contrast to the failed socialist 0 agenda.

However, if 0 wins another term, the damage to the Supreme Court would likely be irreparable. It would take CW2 to rectify things.

A real pity that neither of us is a member of the GOP-RNC-Establishment-RINO-Romney-or-bust squad. We might be able to talk some sense to them.

First off, the economic plan of either Santorum or Gingrich would turn the US economy around effectively within four years.

Would they have the House and Senate? I think so. Could they chop the Federal Government down a peg or two? I would love to give either or both of these fellows a shot. Will they be crowned as the candidate(s)?

Not, my dear fellow, if the GOP-RNC-RINO-Establishment carries the day.

2 wins, 4 2nd places. The rest 3rd or 4th. Santorum is the choice if conservatives want to win.

“If Newt stays in that will happen and then Obama will win.”

If Santorum becomes the nominee, BO wins. Newt is the strongest candidate to take on the MSM propaganda machine and BO in debates.

I’m not nearly as pessimistic.

We have to win all the McLame states from 08. (easy I think - Santorum is way more appealing than McLame)

Flip Indiana (I’ve got that covered - it’s a lock with very popular Mike Pence on the ticket for Gov).

Then comes flipping Ohio and Florida (definite maybe)

and then either Penn or NC + VA. (Ok those are tough)

It will be a very close finish, no way Baraq “destroys” any Republican.

But Newt ain't gonna win...he has won only two states for crying out loud and is losing the South to a damn Yankee and that is embarrassing. The Left and Romney want Newt to stay in to hurt Rick and it is sad all the gullible people who don't see it.

Santorum is the only one who can beat both Mitt and Obama and Newt is too egotistical to gracefully bow out for his country.
