A US soldier has killed 16 Afghan civilians, including nine children, after entering their homes in Kandahar. Sky sources said the Afghan victims also included women and elderly men.
Minister of Border and Tribal Affairs Asadullah Khalid, who is investigating the incident, said the soldier entered three homes, killing 11 people in the first one.
The Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) coalition confirmed the incident but did not release the number of killed or injured.
Sky defence reporter Mark Stone said: "Details are still sketchy and various death tolls have emerged.
"It appears to be an isolated incident and the soldier is believed to have been a staff sergeant."
Isaf Deputy Commander Lt Gen Adrian Bradshaw said: "I wish to convey my profound regrets and dismay at the actions apparently taken by one coalition member in Kandahar province.
"I cannot explain the motivation behind such callous acts, but they were in no way part of authorised ISAF military activity."
According to the Panjwai district governor office, seven people died and up to 17 injured were injured in the rampage.
The injured have been treated for their wounds at Nato medical facilities.
Protests were held over the Koran-burning incident
The US embassy in Kabul attempted to quell expected Afghan unrest by also issuing an apology.

I believe Obama is deliberately bleeding out our troops, money, and ammunition in Afghanistan while at the same time providing the means for both Pakistan and Afghanistan to abandon both their alliance with the US against terror and a Constitution supposedly affirming religious freedom - and instead follow the “Muslim agenda” of full, unapologetic sharia (an agenda Obama told the Egyptian ambassador he supports, as he was and still is a Muslim).
As you say, this could be the press misrepresenting a battle scenario. Or it could be Obama himself planting somebody there with orders to do something like this to further enrage the Afghanistanis - to help cover the fact that Obama’s apologies did NOT stop the violence in Afghanistan and to serve the “Muslim agenda” in the way mentioned in the previous paragraph.
I really, really hope that people in the military leadership - if there are any who are still faithful to their oaths to protect this country and its Constitution - will seriously consider that the enemies DOMESTIC are the most dangerous ones, and particularly since both communism and Islamism (America’s 2 greatest enemies) have said their tactic will be to degrade our system FROM WITHIN.
I can’t honestly defend what this guy did...but the Taliban have already won. Afghan’s prez is already working out surrender details. Time to leave that hell hole.
I’ve seen it on Foxnews:

Being the parent of a Marine over there now, I see this as a truly devastating event. The motives of the detained service member will be disclosed.
Justice.
THE SOLDIER MUST BE TRIED AT HOME.
How many Afghan citizens are murdered every week by the Taliban? Let’s see what the reaction of the Afghan people at this time.
If they riot and attack us for vengeance, if one of our military members is killed in vengeance,
I will say what I have not EVER said, “Get them all out,” because, if we are attacked in vengeance than in all justice the native Afghanistan people who riot should be rioting and avenging those murdered by the Taliban.
Period. If they avenge these people against our military, then they do not respect our just laws and consider us the enemy but do not consider the Taliban the enemy when they kill their own.
Karzai, this is another test for you, and another test for all the people of Afghanistan.
Petraus, if this military campaign falls apart it is because of YOUR strategies and God help the US with you as the head of the CIA.
There has to be more to the story. This guys was an E-6 and it is unlikely that he would just “go off” like that for no reason.
Can someone tell me why we’re there?
——A US soldier has killed 16 Afghan civilians, including nine children,——
16 Afghan civilians.....or 16 Taliban ?
Nine children or nine young adult males ?
I’d wait to see the whole story..... If true.....firing sqad
I agree. Do we know what the actual mission is, more importantly do those serving know? Our leaders have recklessly deployed our military too many times where the mission is much more complex than winning the war. We waste our treasure and military lives defending corrupt governments that are not even pro USA. Get our military out now and start defending the USA borders.
You know I bet most who think we should be over there haven’t spent a minute in uniform.
Nothing is what it appears to be with this administration. I refuse the article pending hard facts from a source independent of the administration that’s not full blown socialist.
"You train young men to drop fire on people, but you won't let them write 'F#&K' on the side of their airplanes . . . because it's 'obscene'!"
It's amazing how disconnected I am from what goes on in that sh!t-hole over there. When I read the post just now, my first reaction was: "If a U.S. soldier flipped out and killed 16 civilians, I guess it's better there than here."
Given where this happened, there could be some rather extreme back story.
I would not rule out, perhaps even a local gf honor killed or something.
Be nice if everyone waited for the whole story.
Nation Building screw that.
Seriously. I mean, this soldier went insane and killed 16 civilians, but at least he didn't do anything really awful and burn a Koran.
Funny how they are NATO troops when they are killed and US troops when they kill.
Now I personally think we should have left years ago, that said. obama and the administration will use this or a trio of events like this, including the koran burning to bug out.
He will have us leave in shame, apologizing all the way home while he quietly rejoices at destroying America's military.
But that won't stop us from apologizing (read advertising) now and endangering all the other troops.
I’m surprised there haven’t been more cases. our young men and women are trained as warriors, then shackled and turned into non-retributive targets. It has to take a tremendous emotional toll to see us ignoring the atrocities of the enemy (if you can still refer to them as “enemy”, and punishing our guys for defending themselves in hot zones or for burning “sacred” korans whie ordering the burning of Bibles as a concession to the enemy. It sickens me as a retired AF troop and I was never put in harms way.
