The odor and flammability could be issues.

...in large enough quantities it could be splashed on the pilot and set on fire. ~sarc

In a tight, cramped, possibly fully occupied 737 with nowhere for other people to go for a breath of fresh air?
"Passive nail polish huffing" might be a good term for it.
It's something you have to experience to appreciate. Honestly I wish the airlines would explicitly say it and maybe even put up a sign. "No nail polish on the flight. Do 'em when you get to the hotel."

In an enclosed space, the fumes can be very strong. No person with the slightest bit of consideration for her neighbors would ever think of painting her nail on a plane.

Some polishes have overwhelming smell and with the circulatory air system in a plane that smell would spread through the cabin.
There's a reason why so many nail technicians wear masks.

Highly explosive fumes in an airliner and in close proximity to oxygen masks is a very big deal!

So whats the big deal about nail polish? In this day and age, with all the concerns over new ways to cause terror, she should have just waited to finish the nail job.

There is no big deal.. its all about control with the airlines these days. They are not happy unless they boss you around and stomp on you with jackboots.
Its the number one reason I will not fly anymore.

Having witnessed first hand a woman doing nail polish in flight, I applaud all those involved in this case. Polish releases aeromatic fumes at altitude which are noxious beyond belief.

The homosexual stewards thought it clashed with her purse.
The fat granny lesbian stewardesses don’t approve of women dressing up.

It is very flammable. The low humidity in the plane and the potential for static electricity could spark a fire. Besides who wants to smell the solvents in that closed environment.
