I'm a huge Newt supporter and will continue to support him, but it seems the home schooling Catholic has enraptured the Christian evangelical and "church lady" voters. This would seem to be corroborated by some of the exit polling data presented tonight.
For you younger members, there used to be a skit on Saturday Night Live which featured an ignorant, puritanical lady who saw Satan in everything in modern culture. Even though large numbers of evangelical Christians actually believe the Catholic church is apostate, for some reason, they are readily latching on to Santorum, apparently because of his overt incorporation of religious themes and controversies into his campaign.
What made me think of the Church Lady was an interview I saw tonight on CNN. They interviewed a white haired lady in, I believe, Ohio. Upon being asked about the fact that Santorum had failed to get delegate slates in three Ohio districts, she responded "well, if God wants Santorum to win, he will win, REGARDLESS OF THE DELEGATES"!
With supporters so divorced from reality, what effective argument can Newt make, and how can he compete?
Good post. And good question. I think Newt is done. If southern “Church Ladies” and their ilk are breaking for Santo, I really don’t see what he can do. Maybe this is turning into a beauty contest. Remember Rush’s “Arousal Gappers”?
This conservative woman is 100% behind Newt
If Santo keeps allowing himself to be drawn into these controversies such as “fighting sodomite marriage”, as you say, you can kiss any hope of replacing Obama goodbye.
Yes, but the candidate who enters the convention with the delegate lead might not win the nomination.
While Santorum was campaigning with Specter for President to remove the pro-life plank from the GOP platform?
Santorum has a bizarre left-wing, pro-abortion past that people don’t know about.
I guess most of it will not be discussed until the threat from the right is beaten.
I was driving my daughter home from a friend’s house tonight and I had the election coverage on the radio. They played a clip of Santorum speaking, and my daughter, unprompted, said that she can tell who was speaking because he “sounds whiny”. Not a good sign.
Santorum's appeal in Ohio has many facets, but he did one thing that Newt failed to do - he campaigned hard here, and he asked for votes. His speeches in my part of the state (the rural, NW section) were packed, in part because social conservatives were enthusiastic about his campaign. A good chunk of rural Ohio is Catholic (me included), and Rick's faith (and lack of scandal in his personal life) had strong appeal, and I think he did a good job connecting with blue collar voters in a way that is hard for Newt (or Romney, especially) to do.
Again, I like newt, but I no longer believe he can win the nomination, and I believe he should drop out and support Santorum.
As an aside, voter turnout in the GOP primary was up strongly from 2008, which had to give Brak the willies. :) This bolsters my theory that Brak will not carry Ohio, regardless of the GOP nominee - the urge to be rid of him is stronger than the dislike of our candidates, all of them.
yeah, that's what we need a President to do alright....../s
Heheheh... Beat me to it. I know, right? Who cares about this crap at this point? The country is going down the crapper, economically and politically speaking (I.E. the gov't just keeps getting bigger and stronger, while we lose more and more freedom), and these people are worried about what the Prez can do about what homos do in their bedrooms... Ugh.
“despite Newts clearly superior energy, economic, and jobs plans.”
“Get back to the important issues, you know, like sodomy and such. Who cares about energy, jobs, security, taxes, etc?”
So you think “sodomy” surpasses energy, jobs, security, and taxes?
What are you thinking?
“well, if God wants Santorum to win, he will win, REGARDLESS OF THE DELEGATES”!
Is that so astonishing? Or ignorant? Once you have an omnipotent God, the above statement is a truism.
Yes, I think stopping the murder of babies, etc. is important.
Don’t forget that Newt was willing to align himself with the global warming hoax. Moreover, only RP has an economic plan that MIGHT pull us back from the abyss - Newt’s is just more D.C. fiddling.
That aside, I think Newt has many positives, and he would cetainly lay a smackdown on Obamalini rhetorically. I’m not so sure he would win - or, perhaps, if gas hits $5-$6 and stays there, anybody could beat Obamalini. I don’t have a crystalball. All I can say is that I would support Newt if he is the nominee.
I’m in NW Ohio too, Putnam Co., a heavy Catholic area. Santorum did very well here.
Newt has changed dramatically. Here are some FR links about his conversion.

Clearly, *one* of you two needs to start using sarcasm tags.
What, so they are just going to throw out the rules, and delegates won’t matter?
This mentality just kind of reminds me of these athletes who, when interviewed after a victory, say something like, “God is great”, or “God is good”, as if God favors them over the other players or team, despite the fact that there are almost certainly other players on the opposing team who are just as devout believers.
O.K...I have a very sincere question.
In the technological world we live in..the candidates are on t.v. ad nauseum. There is internet coverage out the wazoo.
Why is it important for the candidate to actually “ask for votes” in person?
Like I said, I am being sincere because I don’t understand when the issues can be researched why it is an issue.
The social issue, so-called, can’t be separated from the “economic” issues. Buying into that false dichotomy is part of what got us here. But, in any event, you are free to wallow in materialism. Perhaps Huntsman can re-enter the race for you.
At any rate it really doesn't matter what any of us on FR think or believe; Rick and Newt will decide whether to proceed or retire from the field. The only common denominator is that they will both be asking us to send them lots more money. I will stay w/Newt because I believe his Conservative principles and philosophy are closest to my own and recuse myself from having any opinion on what God's will may or may not be.
Today Virginia Conservatives had to settle for a protest vote for Ron Paul because the GOP has disenfranchised us. How can this be the liberty that Patrick Henry spoke of so eloquently?
Blue Hairs for Newt!!!!
