Gingrich Vows to Continue Campaign, Gets Secret Service Protection (starts tomorrow)
National Journal ^ | 3-6-12 | Lara Seligman, Sara Huisenga

Posted on 03/06/2012 7:12:33 PM PST by STARWISE

After winning only one of 10 states in the Super Tuesday sweepstakes -- his home state of Georga -- GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich contrasted his "Main Street work" with rival Mitt Romney's "Wall Street money," and vowed to continue his quest for the nomination.

"We basically put people power up against money power," Gingrich told supporters in a ballroom at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel and Convention Center. He repeatedly referred to Romney, who did considerably better than Gingrich on Tuesday night, as the "Wall Street" candidate.

“There are lots of bunny rabbits to run through," Gingrich said of the volatile primary race. "I am the tortoise. I just take one step at a time.”

He also zeroed in on President Obama, hitting the president on his energy proposals and promoting his pledge to bring gas prices down to between $2 and $2.50 a gallon.

"I believe I am the one candidate who has the ability to debate Barack Obama decisively,” Gingrich said.

By winning the state he represented in Congress for 20 years, Gingrich met the standard he set for himself to continue seeking the nomination. “If I can't carry my home state where people know me, I would have no credibility,” Gingrich said.

But he was disappointed by losses to rival Rick Santorum in Oklahoma and Tennessee, two states where Gingrich hoped his conservative pitch held appeal.

A source in the Gingrich campaign confirmed to National Journal that the candidate will get Secret Service protection beginning Wednesday. The campaign had requested an official security detail in late February but only heard today that their request has been approved.

Gingrich was 4th tonight in a lot of races, 4th, not second, not third, but fourth, behind even Ron Paul.

Clearly, if either Santorum or Gingrich drop out, the ballgame changes dramatically, and Romney will be severely threatened. Plus, the conservative left standing will get more money to counter Romney’s despicable attack ads.

If Gingrich’s and Santorum’s positions were reversed, there would be a loud clamoring for Santorum to drop out, and everyone reading this knows that would be the case. Gingrich needs to realize that his staying in is only helping Romney from this point on. If he’d have won TN, and ND, and if it had been a 3-man race for OH tonight, that would be different, but Santorum won TN and ND and OK, and is in a 2-man race for OH.

Gingrich has no chance; he knows it, and only his massive ego will keep him in this race from this point on. He needs to thank Georgians for supporting him and exit gracefully.

I need to get this off my chest about Palin.

I’ve admired her in the past but had my doubts. But I’m a person who believes a person’s loyalty intoughntimes shows a lot about his character. Sarah’s sticking with Newt through thick and thin In this deal has earned her my eternal admiration.

If she decides to run some day, I’ll walk through fire to vote for her.

I can't believe how many people buy into the GOP/Media/Dem/Leftist spin and declare M. Romney the nominee.

Yesterday he had just over a hundred delegates.

In fact, every candidate needed about the same amount more of delegates to win the nom., over a thousand.

Today Melissa Harris-Perry did a very good analysis of the process. I watched it on TV.

If any of you want to take the time to look at her “jellybean” theory, it's very informative.

Especially you, rwfromkansas.

STARWISE, I had this saved to post as a thread, but here will do...

Yes, and the way things are going, Gingrich and Santorum will split them, while Romney picks up a few too, and then wins the winner-take-all states with 38% of the GOP vote.

Again, if Santorum were in Gingrich’s position right now, everyone would be calling for him to drop out and let Gingrich take Romney on one-on-one, instead of splitting the conservative vote.

Conservatives have picked their candidate. It’s Santorum, for good or bad. Perry, Bachmann, Gingrich...all had chances, and yet it’s Santorum that keeps coming back. He was my last choice, but he’s way better than Romney, and he’ll win it all if Gingrich leaves. If he doesn’t leave, Romney might very well be the nominee, and that would be the real GOP disaster in the making.

NONE of them are going to get 1144.

I'm a conservative and Santorum is NOT my pick. He spends too much money and we CANNOT afford him. Look at his voting record. NO THANK YOU! I will pass.

Yup, Santorum is the MSM/dem/leftist/GOP candidate de jour.

Gingrich is the only one that can defeat Obama.

Romney will be pulverized if he is the candidate.

Santorum should drop out and let Gingrich take the nomination.

that’s a good argument.

Looks like the anti-Newt troll rode the lightning, real sudden-like. Many thanks to those responsible for taking out the garbage, it was beginning to really stink up the joint.

Sheesh ! Talk about tying both hands behind our
backs and covering one eye! Who the heck thought
this was sane? 1144 = hellish waters with a shark
around every turn defying a clear, sensible route
to the destination. Sure makes a brokered convention
not so much of a surprising possibility. Crazy.

Yup, the South don’t much care about Rick Perot Santorum after he endorsed Massachusetts Liberal Mitt Romney the last time around.

I'm getting rather annoyed with the whole thing. Maybe if a three-way brokered convention (I don't count Ron Paul) ended up something like this:

...it would make the process more interesting.

It looks like history is repeating itself - Americans often vote for the wrong leader.
It is the herd mentality.
In 2008, the herd was led in the direction of a ‘messiah’ so a ‘messiah’ was installed.
Now it appears that the herd is led in the direction of the ‘saint’.

The real leader is shunned because the herd is blindly rushing towards the shiny lure dangled in front of them -hats off to the left’s brilliant ‘pump and dump’ strategy.

The ‘saint’ is enjoying the pump now only to be dumped later - the ‘messiah’ will vaporize the ‘saint’ in the general election. The left and their ‘messiah’ will triumph one more time!

Wait! not so fast. The Reagan triumph just might repeat itself! The true leader, who is trudging behind now, will sprint ahead when no one is expecting him and snatch the prize from the ‘saint’, defeat the ‘messiah’ and save the day.

It is useless trying to explain to those who don’t have the judgement/insight to resist being herded.
The 3% who are determined and dedicated to breaking the grip of tyranny never waver in their conviction, never quit over temporary defeat; they keep marching on.....
And the Republic is born again!

I don't give a rip. When Newt was ahead, I was not one of those calling for Santorum to get out. Newt's strength is the South, as long as he wants to stay in, it is OK in my book.

The only one that maybe should drop out is Romney.

Newt is the one bringing out good ideas, noting history, and constitutional foundations for his policies. Rick and Mitt have both been improving their speeches by co-opting things Newt has said. So Newt is improving the discourse.

Basically each candidate should and will decide on their own when it is time to exit. Santorum didn't drop out when everyone said he was finished, so I see no reason why Newt should do so when the shoe is on the other foot.

The more delegates Newt gets, the more exposure his ideas have, the better for America-win, lose, or draw.

AMEN! The system, the season, the candidates, the unforeseen events will play out as they do. I don’t
care if it goes thru to August.

Bad for the party? The bosses aren’t the party .. WE
ARE THE PARTY! We are constitutionally vested to be
served by our govt, and we want a reliable, experienced,
able conservative.

Newt and they all deserve to take it all the way thru,
no matter what anyone else would prefer for their own
precious hides now.

I doubt even Newt expected to win those states. What he hoped was to garner a few more delegates under their proportional representation, which he DID.

In a general election, Newt would roll to victory in both states.
