By the time the clock was about to hit midnight on FRIDAY, MARCH 2nd, a half-dozen advertisers had used TWITTER to notify their clientele that they had pulled their advertising from RUSH LIMBAUGH's syndicated program.
CALIFORNIA mattress store chain SLEEP TRAIN was the first to announce via TWITTER that it has pulled its ads from LIMBAUGH's syndicated PREMIERE NETWORKS show after the host referred to a college student testifying about contraceptive availability as a "slut," then demanded that women on the pill provide sex videos since the government mandates insurance pays for the pill -- comments LIMBAUGH asserted were made as a form of absurd humor.
The chain, which operates in the SACRAMENTO, SAN FRANCISCO, SAN DIEGO, CENTRAL VALLEY and INLAND EMPIRE markets, tweeted, "We don't condone negative comments directed toward any group. In response, we are currently pulling our ads from RUSH with RUSH LIMBAUGH (sic)."
National advertiser SELECT COMFORT, which advertises its SLEEP NUMBER mattresses on the show, also pulled its ads from the show, tweeting, "Recent comments by RUSH LIMBAUGH do not align w/our values, so we made decision to immediately suspend all advertising on that program." Neither company's tweets indicate for how long the suspension of ads will last.
Later in the day, QUICKEN LOANS sent out the following Tweet: Due to continued inflammatory comments -- along w/valuable feedback from clients & team members -- QL has suspended ads on RUSH LIMBAUGH program."
Apparently, LIMBAUGH only fueled the controversy over his comments about activist law student SANDRA FLUKE and her attempts to testify before Congress in favor of government-funded contraception, saying on FRIDAY, "when the left wants to pretend they have no sense of humor, they are excellent at it. Yesterday in the riff about it, 'Okay, okay, fine. If we're gonna pay for this, at least let us have something for it. How about some sex videos?' If anybody doesn't realize that we are illustrating absurdity here by being absurd and that that is the trademark of this program ... But oh, no! 'Oh, of everything else you've said, that's the lowest of the low. Demanding sex video? Who do you think you are?' Lighten up. I remember using that phrase all the way back in 1989: Lighten up."
He later added, "now, at the end of this week, I am the person that the women of AMERICA are to fear the most. What can I do to the women of AMERICA? Do I have the power to raise their taxes? I do not. Do I have the power to regulate their behavior? I do not. Do I have the power to make health care decisions for them? I do not. Do I have the power to withhold birth control pills from them? I do not. Do I have the power to audit their tax returns? I do not. Do I have the power to take their little four-year-old kindergarten student's lunch and throw it away and make 'em eat something else? I do not. Do I have the power to look into their personal life and leak the information to the media? I do not. Is there one bit of freedom that I can deny them? Can I raise their taxes? They want to blame me as being the person they should fear, when in fact the people doing all these things I just said I have no power to do, the DEMOCRAT PARTY (sic) is doing."
Once The Dominoes Start Falling....
LIMBAUGH'S rant certainly didn't quell the furor, as LEGALZOOM then tweeted that it "has suspended all advertising on the RUSH LIMBAUGH show."
Next to be heard was CITRIX, which went on FACEBOOK to announce, "We have listened to our customers & have decided to cease our advertising on The RUSH LIMBAUGH Show immediately."
But that may not be all, as PRO FLOWERS tweeted to its followers: "Rest assured, your feedback is heard. We heard about the comments and we will reevaluate our marketing plan."
What's more, CARBONITE CEO DAVID FRIEND posted this open letter to his customers:
Over the past two days we have received a tremendous amount of feedback on RUSH LIMBAUGHs recent comments. I too am offended and very concerned about his comments. LIMBAUGHs remarks have us rethinking our future use of Talk radio.
We use more than 40 Talk show hosts to help get the CARBONITE message out to the public. The nature of Talk radio is that from time to time, listeners are offended by a host and ask that we pull our advertising. This goes for conservatives like LIMBAUGH and progressives like STEPHANIE MILLER and ED SHULTZ. We even get customers who demand that we pull the plug on NPR. As an advertiser, we do not have control over a shows editorial content or what they say on air. CARBONITE does not endorse the opinions of the shows or their hosts.
However, the outcry over LIMBAUGH is the worst weve ever seen. I have scheduled a face-to-face meeting next week with LIMBAUGH during which I will impress upon him that his comments were offensive to many of our customers and employees alike.
Please know your voice has been heard and that we are taking this matter very seriously.
Bill Mahr said worse than that about Palin. Rush doesn’t need those sponsors or the radio gig for that matter. I just woulnt pay them any mind. In fact, I think this is a perfect opportunity for Rush to address sherriff Arpaio’s findings.
Easy now. Rush has over 600 affilate stations, meaning he is an ad salesman’s wet dream. The stupid liberals just bought even more ad time from Rush..
HA! I think the exact same thing.
I know Rush sort of mastered the art of including the commercials in various parts of his monologue, but I find it really irritating. I realize it is one of the things that makes him successful and keeps him on the air, but I can't help feeling tricked every time he, Hannity, etc, pull these increasingly seamless transitions from talk about economic/political issues into advertising for Carbonite, Goldline, etc.
I just cancelled my Citrix (GoToMeeting) account and sent them this message:
Just dropped your service. If you decide you want to rethink your Rush Limbaugh decision please let me know and we will consider using your product again. I don’t think it is appropriate for you to bring politics into your business relationships. Especially when it is in support of a woman that completely misrepresented herself and her issues.
His upcoming Monday show will be historic. That is, if he doesn’t take the day off.. I don’t see how anyone can stand in defense of a 30 year old POLITICAL HACK lawyer who misrepresents herself and LIES about using contraceptives while being LESBIAN. WTF?
Let them pull their ads. They took that profit to support Obama and other Liberal causes anyway. Legal Zoom is owned by Shapiro, the famed OJ Lawyer who helped a brutal murderer walk off Scott free.
Rush will pick up ten more better sponsors, for every one of these rats that abandon a perfectly good ship.
Stand your ground Rush! (I have a hunch that is exactly what he intends to do.)
Well, it is interesting that all of the GBTV shows we watch seem to have new advertisers every week, as well as the original underwriters.
Compare the reach he has now with what he had with Fox. What I’m saying is that the progressives in government, business and the MSM are engaged in a full court press that is seeing results. Media Matters is stronger today than in the past. It is just dandy to call Israel a terrorist entity but Callanetics activist a slut when she talks like one merits the death penalty.
We had one of those monstrosities, lasted two years then started to leak. Was a big disappointment even when it worked.
You’ve been misinformed. Glenn Beck didn’t lose his advertisers. He left cable stations to start his own TV station, GBTV. BTW if you’re not already subscribed to it you should. It’s great and very informative and growing by leaps and bounds.
I actually subscribe to GBTV Plus. I love Glenn’s 5 o’clock show and the BS of A. But, I don’t know anyone else in my network of conservative family and friends who subscribes to GBTV. It remains to be seen how successful GBTV will be.
I dunno.
Beck is now a bigger fish, in a smaller pond.
He literally owns the pond, and is making it bigger by the day.
Fox and the left may rue the day, they went after Beck.

Let's just say, other ads will take their place. If it's worth it, they will put their ads back on RUSH's show, because of .... money .....and after the huhhah dies down. The public has a very short term memory.
I just emailed Carbonite that if they CANCEL Rush....I will CANCEL our CARBONITE! Suggest others do the same.
And how many advertisers pulled their commercials after Bill Mahr’s vile attacks on Sarah Palin? Or any other liberals’? (I haven’t a clue how to spell his name.) These advertisers can spend their money as they choose—and so can I!
You mean the same advertisers that have been selling you a box of 10% detergent and 90% ground up dog bones to wash your clothes in ?
Yes, the very CEO who is probably in the 1% that the boycotting moonbats loathe is now putty in their hands.
Someone should tell him that they're gonna hate him regardless of his pulling advertising from Limbaugh.
Maybe not overnight but they will find replacements. Rush, by the way, is paid a salary by contract. This doesn't hurt his revenue an iota but it will make the network suffer short term. The worst that will happen is that the network may offer discounted rates for awhile to attract new customers but it won't take them very long.
And those new advertisers will have the benefit of picking up Rush as an advertiser just in time for the 2012 campaign which is when more listeners tune in.
Let these weak-kneed advertisers walk. It's better to be hungry at times and what better time for Rush to be motivated than during the general election?
Could we all post the contact addresses/links/phone numbers for these seven companies, as we make contact with them? Let’s not allow these leftist bastards to injure one of OUR OWN.
Folks, this is war...fight with all your might and let the left AND these companies know we Americans who love the Constitution, our freedom and liberty, WILL NOT BE STOPPED.
