Campaigning Against the Modern World (longtime PA reporter outlines why Santorum is angry)
The New York Times ^ | 2/24/2012 | Tom Ferrick, Jr.

Posted on 02/25/2012 7:16:36 AM PST by darrellmaurina

As a journalist who covered Rick Santorum in Pennsylvania for years, I can understand the Tea Party’s infatuation with him. It’s his anger. It is in perfect synch with the constituency he is wooing.

Even at the height of his political success, when he had a lot to be happy about, Santorum was an angry man. I found it odd. I was used to covering politicians who had good dispositions — or were good at pretending they had good dispositions.

Santorum was different...

People who don’t know him — and just see the angry Rick — don’t realize what a clever politician Santorum is. He didn’t rise to become a Washington insider through the power of prayer. He may say the Rosary, but he knows his Machiavelli.

That said, Santorum’s anger is not an act. It is genuine. It has its roots in the fact that he had the misfortune to be born in the second half of the 20th century. In his view, it was an era when moral relativism and anti-religious feeling held sway, where traditional values were ignored or mocked, where heretics ruled civic and political life. If anything, it’s gotten worse in the 21st, with the election of Barack Obama...

Again, this is a perfect example of something meant as a “hit piece” against Rick Santorum that actually does a good job of showing how conservative he is, and how much his conservative Catholicism has in common with what we’re used to in the conservative Protestant “Religious Right” movement.

Reading these criticisms of Santorum’s comments sounds like reading criticism of an Italian version of Jerry Falwell... and I mean that as a compliment, not a crticism.

Indeed. any Christian who does not see "the modern world" about the same as Rick does, has a serious eye problem.

Angry? hell yes. I'm angry about pretty much the same things. Any decent American would be.

It seems that this idiot is confusing passion with anger.

I wasn’t sure this was going to be a hit piece until I hit “He sees the president as an exemplar of mushy, feel-good Christianity that emphasizes tolerance over rectitude, and the love of Jesus over the wrath of God.”

I don’t ever remember Obama talking about Jesus.

This commie putz probably did a double take when he got his fax from the White House telling him to throw in an “Obama loves Jesus” line.

Well, Ron Paul is also “at war with the modern world,” only not at the sexual mores, but at the profligacy of the government. He used to be called a crank. Don’t know if his proposed resolutions work but his criticisms have been right on for at least 25 years. That’s when he jumped off the Republican train for awhile. I think this is when he realized the Reagan had begun to lose his grip. Even King David got old, you know.

Campaigning Against the Modern World

A more appropriate description would be “Campaigning Against the Perverse, Amoral, Evil, Ignorant Liberal World.”

Dear Tom,

I guess you need a new set of Obama presidential knee pads after you wore your old set out writing this lame hit piece....

I could see the snarky little comments sewn in by the ‘reporter’ but I just kept saying “damn right” to everything it wrote about Santorum’s thoughts. The only difference I would say is that I don't think I am angry nor is Santorum. At least not as a constant.

We all on this side of the fence GET angry when we go over the specifics of the enemy but we are generally not ANGRY as a constant. We are trusting God, content in his will and protection.

On a slightly older issue. If anyone DOES NOT think that Satan is attacking America they are an idiot and lack the mental capacity to truly be called an adult.

A typical hit piece. Conservatives are angry. The corrupt and decline of America is the modern world. Belief in anything better is a sign of mental instability or outright insanity.

These attacks make me like Santorum more.

What intelligent and patriotic American does not feel righteous anger at the bankrupting and destroying of our country by the Obama Administration? What knowledgeable and caring American does not feel righteous anger at the human misery and human suffering caused by Obama and the Democrats?

This is definitely a hot piece and is quite telling who the liberals do NOT WANT the Saboteur of 1600 to face in the election.

These cretins at WSJ are still trying to tell us that Santorum is the Democrat’s dream candidate. All the while the Democrats have been looking out for the GOP’s best interest by educating us on how Mitt Romney - “is the one who has the best chance of beating Obama”.

Isn’t it altruistic for the entire Democrat organization, all their news anchors, all their pundits and all of their high ranking DNC officials - for the entire primary season -to help us out like that. They want to give us a little “edge”.

We must have had their intentions all wrong!

Not even by implication has Santorum hit at the Social Gospelers. When he talks about a false theology, he is talking about a kind of neo-paganism, ,or maybe a syncratic theology which cannot distinguish between normative Christianity of Islam. I have met (Turkish)Muslims who say think that one can be a Muslim and a Christian at the same time. The Cairo Speech is fully of this fuzziness.

He’s not ANGRY...he’s disgusted!! Just like a lot of us who are disgusted with the way this government is run. I notice that’s the new “word”....ANGRY! No, no and no. We the people are DISGUSTED!

Should have included a link:

WWJD: He would support the "Buffett" rule, President Obama suggests::

Obama: “And I think to myself, if I’m willing to give something up as somebody who’s been extraordinarily blessed and give up some of the tax breaks that I enjoy, I actually thinks that’s going to make economic sense.”

“But for me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’ teaching that, from to whom much is given, much shall be required.”

Of course, Obama isn't giving up anything -- he gets all-expenses-paid trips to Hawaii, Europe, Martha's Vineyard, and other places. His family can take ski trip vacations. He doesn't need a dime of money, and he's got millions.
