As Time Goes By . . . (Victor Davis Hansen)

It is hard to remember a more tense time in the last 20 years. Tiny Israel may be poised to preempt the nuclear capabilities of Iran (an Iran that itself once attempted, unsuccessfully, to take out the Iraqi reactor at Osirak before Israel finished the job), whose terrorist appendages and missiles have the ability to do it a great deal of damage in return. How such a war would escalate or end, no one knows. There is no sense of a global effort to stop Iran’s proliferation, given that China and Russia seem to enjoy the irritation that Iran causes the West. I think U.S. policy amounts to a sort of shrug (we publicly discourage the Israelis, privately sorta hope they do, and publicly will sorta condemn them if they do).

Hanson, not Hansen.

Obama is such a dipstick that he thinks Iran is a story about his 2008 campaign.

I like Hanson. Boring old Hugh Hewitt turned me on to him. (Love Hugh, but that show can be dry.)

I, also, feel there is something ready to blow. Sad we have the little fraud in the WH. He’s no friend of Israel.

This is one reason Free Republic's donations are down. Folks are tired of being criticized in a shitty, snotty manner for a something as simple as a spelling error. And if they happen to support a candidate that the “superior ones” here do not, well Oh my God. I think some have reached the point where they really do not care if FR stays or goes.

—yep—IMHO, VDH is one of the top commentators on current affairs—his historic writing is great, also—

"A U.S. that ran up $5 trillion debt in three years is in no position either to sermonize or to help much."

"a possible vast unilateral reduction in the U.S. strategic arsenal cannot reassure our non-nuclear allies, Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan (who could all, if they so wished, become nuclear by next month), that they are safely within the U.S. umbrella in a world of China, North Korea, Pakistan, and Iran."

The U.S.A. is full of morons.

Has it always been so? Probably. The difference between now and then is that they have become empowered and that they have managed to commandeer the press, academic institutions, and Hollywood.

The worst thing about morons is that they don't know how stupid they are. They don't even know that they are morons!

Charles Krauthammer: "History is not just cruel. It is witty."

Clio is doubled over laughing!

As the rest of Europe sinks deeper and deeper into dependence on Germany--and Germany emerges as the sole power in Europe--we cannot seem to dispel déjà vu.

And as the spectre of a nuclear armed Germany rises before a confused and self-deluded world--we cannot help wondering what else Clio has in store for us.

What Americans need most right now is trillions of tons of ginko biloba.

I was hoping to get the original poster to alert the moderator to make the change. I don't think that writing "Hanson, not Hansen" is either shitty or snotty. As for your suggestion that noting spelling errors has somehow led to a decline in Free Republic donations--that's quite an inductive leap! Your criticism of the conflict between those who support different candidates is a lot more accurate and well-founded.

Another brilliant piece by VDH. One of my favorites, too.

Ditto. I’ve seen people literally banned for the slightest criticism of Gingrich. So it’s not just group think, it’s the mods’ heavy-handedness.
