Rick Santorum's taken a large lead in Michigan's upcoming Republican primary. He's at 39% to 24% for Mitt Romney, 12% for Ron Paul, and 11% for Newt Gingrich.
Santorum's rise is attributable to two major factors: his own personal popularity (a stellar 67/23 favorability) and GOP voters increasingly souring on Gingrich. Santorum's becoming something closer and closer to a consensus conservative candidate as Gingrich bleeds support.
Santorum's winning an outright majority of the Tea Party vote with 53% to 22% for Romney and 10% for Gingrich. He comes close to one with Evangelicals as well at 48% to 20% for Romney and 12% for Gingrich. And he cracks the 50% line with voters identifying as 'very conservative' at 51% to 20% for Romney and 10% for Gingrich.
Santorum's benefiting from the open nature of Michigan's primary as well. He's only up by 12 points with actual Republican voters, but he has a 40-21 advantage with the Democrats and independents planning to vote that pushes his overall lead up to 15 points. Santorum is winning by a healthy margin in every region of the state except for Oakland County, where Romney has a 40-26 advantage, and the area around Lansing where Paul actually has an advantage at 30% to 27% for both Romney and Santorum.

Oh I don’t buy the Newt winning debates argument either, it’s just the only argument that’s even vaguely credible that is being used by Newt’s supporters.
General election debates are very different from Primary debates. The format will be setup to suit Obama, the questions will of course suit Obama, and most people watching them aren’t going to be judging them like they are college debate tournaments, they will judge them by who they like more.
Obama looking at the camera and talking about how much he “cares” will trump 10,000 debating points that Gingrich “wins.”
Hey Brand Newbie. Conservative women are smart people, who think things through a heck of a lot more than leftist men (like you?) do.
I'd watch those misogyist comments on a conservative forum, if I were you. It's the left who are racists and sexists, not us.
Newt could not get 39% of the female vote. You are dreaming. It would be 1964 redux.
Your post has excellent points all around. The arguments that Santorum is too much this and not enough that to beat Obummer is silly. He has the best favorables of all the candidates and he has a solid message. He can beat Obummer.
You're missing his point, which wasn't serious anyway.
The problem is conservative women are heavily outnumbered by women who aren't, much more so than is the case with men.
If this party has gone that stupid to nominate Santorum, they will learn the hard way, that not only is the “Sanctimonious Reverend” Rick as incompetent as he has always been, he will have all of America very angry with him.
They will be angry, to the point where they will gladly vote for Obama again, because Santo is too religiously driven but too fiscally ignorant to understand exactly that America wants from him. He will likely interpret the support he is getting as some divine appointment from which his narrow religious agenda will be implemented.
Santorum is so far out of touch, that even his supporters are buying this illusion with their last dime.
Could be wrong, but I don't think so.
So did I. What a fantastic president he would have made. One of the greatest. Instead we got the douchebag McCain and the Boy King.
A steady drumbeat of scare ads about social conservatism will eliminate his moderate and independent support, and destroy Santorum in a general election.
You really think Romney will let Santorum defeat him?
Unless the 2 really have a pact to remove Gingrich, Romney will fire at Santorum mercilessly.
Granted the media and the GOP E might want Santorum to keep Gingrich in check, but if they help to creat a Santorum monster to threaten their chosen Romney, how will they get Romney nominated?
Mitt's the only 'cute' guy running, and you don't see a lot of support for him among serious conservative women, do you?
LIke Santorum, you also have no sense of humor or sarcasm.
But go ahead, full, blind speed ahead to utter failure! You are about to get what you deserve.
Romney is a clumsy, GOP establishment giant, Gingrich is just a 4th place pest and Ron Paul is still too crazy to be President.
Go Santorum, Go!!!!!
Gingrich has a metric TON of baggage, plus he dodged the draft during Vietnam.
And that's just the beginning, say nothing of his kissy face propaganda with Nancy Pelosi on Global Warming.
That tells me that Santorums pro freedom message is exciting disaffected Rats much like Reagan did in '80. Remember the Reagan Democrats? Did that make Reagan a RINO for appealing to them?
But then again, I've read posts on this forum that Santorum would set up a "theocracy"......and from people who actually imagine themselves to be conservatives.
For some freepers, moral values are scary things.......especially since there's been an onslaught of Paul supporters on this forum.
As far as I'm concerned, it's the amoral libertarians who are scary.....and they absolutely hate Rick Santorum.
Gingrich 21%
Paul 12%
Romney 27%
Santorum 33%
Other 1%
Undecided 6%
