Rick Santorum's taken a large lead in Michigan's upcoming Republican primary. He's at 39% to 24% for Mitt Romney, 12% for Ron Paul, and 11% for Newt Gingrich.
Santorum's rise is attributable to two major factors: his own personal popularity (a stellar 67/23 favorability) and GOP voters increasingly souring on Gingrich. Santorum's becoming something closer and closer to a consensus conservative candidate as Gingrich bleeds support.
Santorum's winning an outright majority of the Tea Party vote with 53% to 22% for Romney and 10% for Gingrich. He comes close to one with Evangelicals as well at 48% to 20% for Romney and 12% for Gingrich. And he cracks the 50% line with voters identifying as 'very conservative' at 51% to 20% for Romney and 10% for Gingrich.
Santorum's benefiting from the open nature of Michigan's primary as well. He's only up by 12 points with actual Republican voters, but he has a 40-21 advantage with the Democrats and independents planning to vote that pushes his overall lead up to 15 points. Santorum is winning by a healthy margin in every region of the state except for Oakland County, where Romney has a 40-26 advantage, and the area around Lansing where Paul actually has an advantage at 30% to 27% for both Romney and Santorum.

My bet is: 1) Females among Tea Partiers who dislike Gingrich for his marital history and dislike Santorum for his religious convictions 2) Evangelicals among both genders who dislike anyone with a Washington DC resume (Gingrich & Santorum).
I like the sweater vests but I would not wear them. I just want a President who will have principles and morals. It will be so refreshing. I can’t wait. By the way, I have a chance of getting my wish. Do you think your candidate will win the nomination? It isn’t looking good.
Were you aware that he lost reelection in his own home state by 17-18%...?
Sorry for the confusion, magslinger--I emailed myself a copy in a moment of clarity.
February 28th.
Romney should drop out.
I could care less what you and your kind think......I do quite well all on my own without your definition of all things righteous.
Like that isn’t going to happen to any candidate we nominate?
“The only hope we have is Newt Gingrich.”
I’ll try to break it to you gently.
You ain’t got no hope if Newt’s the only hope you got.
Much prefer Newt, but
GO RICK!!!!!
Is it a three-man race or a two-man race?
or....
Is it becoming a one man race? (I know. Premature, but I can hope.)
Go Rick!
Someone with moral values, who understands the importance of those values in our leaders? Someone who understands that our Founders understood that without morality in government, America could not last?
Is that what "my kind" is?
Good news. Wild horses couldn’t drag me away from the polls on February 28 to Vote Santorum.
I am not a leftist, and been around a very long time. I keep hearing over and over again Newt has a problem with women. Well, I never hear it is about his plan or ideas, or even if he could run the county. I am just saying, it makes me wonder. I will proudly vote for Rick Santorum, and it will not be the first time I cast my vote for a candidate that will not win the general election. I am a 60 year old grandfather and I have seen this story play out before. So call me newbie or dubie, I don’t care. I am still wondering. Interestingly enough some of my ‘conservative’ women friends wonder the same thing at times. Just saying.
I said it made me wonder. It also makes a lot of my conservative women friends wonder as well. We are not looking for a spouse.
At least a college kid has the excuse of being young, inexperienced and gullible.
You, as far as I can tell, have no excuse.
Independents here are largely social conservative and populists. Most of them are Reagan Democrats and distrusting of slick politicians. Newt's baggage hurts him. The more people know of Mitt the more they don't like him. Santorum's the best of the lot, earned his living, and is who he is.
As far as democrats go, PPP, a dem polling firm, had the crosstabs at 4% of the voters being democrat. Most here hate big business. Romney IS that. Newt was the boogeyman for Clinton. Ron Paul is libertarian far right. Michigan democrats love government. Santorum's simply not them.
Were you aware that Romney was behind by 25% that same year and did not run for reelection?
More importantly, he has no real solution or clue on how to fix this mess, he has merely parroted some of the same ideas and things he heard Speaker Gingrich repeat during the debates. And he certainly has no executive experience or professional background, nor has he fostered any real solutions on his own, that will work.
For years, the Reverend Rick established an indisputable record that mirrors exactly what I described about him.
But the only thing that matters, is that he have “Morals and Principles” (From a narrow social perspective.) while he makes every bit a mess of this country as Obama did, only in a slower and more deliberate way.
Perhaps you need to find more intelligent, patriotic friends.
Besides that, the problem with women and Newt isn't his looks, as you said, nor is it that Rick is a looker (he's not). It's Newt's repeated infidelity. Even though he's repented from it, it belies a character flaw, and for many people, that's a deal breaker for the standard bearer of the party that stands for values.
btw, that includes my 30 year old son who doesn't care what a candidate looks like.
