The Secretary of the Navy announced on Friday that a new littoral combat ship will be named after former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).
The announcement comes the same day that President Obama signed the last piece of legislation sponsored by Giffords, a bill aimed at reducing drug trafficking along the American borders with Canada and Mexico.
Giffords, who recently stepped down from office, was the target of a shooting rampage in early January 2011.
The name this ship bears and the story represented by that name will inspire all those who come in contact with her, said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus at a naming ceremony at the Pentagon Friday.
Giffords appeared at the ceremony with her husband, former Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Roxanna Green, the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, the 9-year-old girl who was killed at the Giffords shooting last year.
Mabus said that Green would be the sponsor of the USS Gabrielle Giffords.
The ship named after Giffords is a littoral combat ship, a smaller ship designed for operations close to the shore. The USS Gabrielle Giffords is the Navys 10th LCS ship.

yet again the military which I love has shown more PC again.
How about naming the ship after hero’s etc I’m sorry she got shot and hurt, sorry her family suffered but others got shot too and the cops who put down the FT Hood shooter in the name of islam were more hero’s as they saved lives and risked their lives
PC is destroying the military and we are promoting officers to Generals based on PC and what they stand for in politics now
Weeellll-—I was thinking LCAC——those things have spectacular rubber butts.
Good grief... is right. It’s just not appropriate. Sure it’s horrible she was shot and terribly wounded, but that’s not the sort of thing that should be getting your name on a ship.
I think it is -really- creepy to be naming ships after living persons. I thought the same way about the USS GHW Bush. I’m fine with naming ships after Presidents, but not while they’re still alive. The USS Reagan didn’t bug me so much, if only because there had at least been more time since his term. I suppose that being so gravely ill, the timing seemed somewhat more reasonable. But generally speaking it just creeps me out.
Wasn’t that judge also supposed to rule negatively on Obama’s eligibility or gunwalker or something? Maybe, he was the real target of the wacky insane leftist (I know. A lot of redundancy in “wacky insane leftist”)
PC has infested the military just like the left has been doing for years.
There are many many people out there who has risked their lives in order to save lives.
She got shot as well as others, some died.
Now the left run around naming a ship after a woman who has done what?
How many lives has she saved, how many times did she risk her life etc?
The left like hate crimes, putting people into groups have to put in order who is more important than others.
They now put her at the top and forget about he judge dying, the little girl, others who were shot, the dead border agent who has saved lives while risking his, how about brave military members, no a congress woman who has done nothing much
I get the sense this is about winning AZ
Is it gonna have a hole in the bridge?
Yes, I went there.
This isn’t the first leftwing name they have put on a ship recently
Another disgraceful act by the thugs who have taken over this country. Why not reserve this honor for men and women in the armed forces who went into harm’s way and never returned.
The name this ship bears and the story represented by that name will inspire all those who come in contact with her,
Giffords was a die-hard abortion supporter. Maybe the ship will inspire more women to abort more babies, then the libs can really rejoice.
It infuriates me to see local buildings with brass plaques with county commissioners or mayors on them. THEY DID NOT BUY THE BUILDING, FIELD, or whatever. TAX PAYERS BOUGHT IT!
Naming things after people should be held as an honor for after they are dead. What happens if you name this ship, then Gabby goes out and shoots a bunch of people or robs a bank? I know. Not likely, but still these things should wait until after the person is deceased, and everything good and bad is known. It is an honor that should be based on a lifetime.
BTW, if I ever ran for office, the HE$$ I would let anyone put my name on anything. If they did, I would have to deface it, even if it were a crime. I really hate wasted tax money on such narcissism and attempts to use incumbency to further their political careers.
IIRC, it was something about a “Mabus” dying that sets off cataclysmic events worldwide.
Still waiting for the USS Kucinich.
This is appalling. It is the zenith of the idiocy that has crept in over the years in the naming of ships.
As a Navy veteran, and the son of a 30 year career naval veteran, this type of thing means something. I have always felt that ships were more than just pieces of metal, that over the years they do become imbued with something more than the inanimate parts that compose them.
The naval service I think died in a way some years back. It isn’t the Navy that men like my father knew, or even the one that I knew.
This was driven home for me recently when I watched the PBS series Carrier. I was disgusted at the attitudes displayed by the naval personnel in this series.
Anybody who has ever served in the military understands that many people who volunteered to go in, often don’t like being there, or wish they were out or back home. That’s a given.
And I do understand that this was PBS, a leftist organization that is going to do its darndest to portray an institution such as the U.S. Navy in the most negative light that it possibly can, but I simply could not stomach watching it.
The pussification and political correctness that I saw was sickening. I guess if I had to categorize it, it was the Oprahfication of the military, and this one happened to be the U.S. Navy on display.
And now this. I’m a loss for words. It’s not that I harbor any ill will towards this person Giffords in particular, or even at all. It just galls me to think that theirs were so many more deserving people of this great honor of having a ship named after them, that to see an insignificant leftist hack whose only claim to fame was that she was shot and injured by someone who didn’t think she was as left as she should’ve been.
I just can’t believe this.
Well then, we can “say” that we named one after Hillary.
Can the Navy get anymore PC, ass kissin’ than it is presently???
Perhaps they should go through every service member killed in war before they start naming ships after injured politicians.
Two things, at least:
On a somewhat-related note, I'm surprised Holder & Company didn't move all sorts of gun control legislation through Congress while they had the chance. Now, it'll have to wait until the Second Term, when Obama either again has both houses of Congress doing his bidding or, after he replaces any one of those pesky originalists on the SCOTUS (then, he can just write Executive Orders).
