Rick Santorum, in an interview with CNN's John King a bit ago, was asked whether he thinks it's a good idea or a bad idea for the Pentagon to relax some of the rules about women taking frontline roles in combat, "perhaps opening the door to a broader role for, ultimately, women in combat."
His answer was both praising of women serving the country, and as a part of the armed services, but he went on to explain why he would take issue with women on the front lines.
"Look, I want to create every opportunity for women to be able to serve this country, and they do so in an amazing and wonderful way. They're a great addition to the - and have been for a long time - to the armed services of our country," Santorum said. "But I do have concerns about women in frontline combat."
He added, "I think that can be a very compromising situation, where people naturally may do things that may not be in the interests of the mission because of other types of emotions that are involved. And I think that's probably - you know, it already happens, of course, with the camaraderie of men in combat. But I think it would be even more unique if women were in combat. I think that's probably not in the best interests of men, women or the mission."
It's not clear exactly what Santorum meant by "other types of emotions that are involved" for women who would be serving in frontline situations. I've emailed a spokesman for a clarification, but haven't heard back yet.
Nice to see there’s at least one candidate that doesn’t look at women as cannon fodder...
And he’s helpfully providing quotes for Obama campaign commercials if he gets the Republican nomination, too.
Here we go how dare he link women to emotions. /s
Don’t you know women are cold hard killing machines just like any man in fact more so? Stronger too. And having them around men in some wasteland far from civilization raises no tensions. /s/s
Oh, I forgot. Santorum was never in the military. Another empty suit.
No way women should be in combat! It’s stupid beyond a doubt!
We say we want a conservative, oh why can’t we get a conservative for a change? One finally shows up and we all say oh no no no! He just can’t win. We don’t want him.
I didn't know we had a form of Govt' that demanded people from the military lead it.
Many men who see combat never want to talk about it and spend the rest of their lives wishing to forget it. I’m not sure it is a good idea to subject a woman to that, not because she is less emotionally stable but because women are often the nurturers and comforters of our society. How difficult it might be to show that side of themselves after witnessing the brutalities of war.
Since when has this election been about all this moral/emotional mumbojumbo?
Lets get back to the crux of this debate, socialism vs capitalism.
Soup lines Vs Jobs
Prosperity Vs crushing debt
Home brew cheap energy Vs High cost Energy alliances with enemys.
“Lets get back to the crux of this debate, socialism vs capitalism.”
So if the unemployment numbers go down a few points, Obama wins.
When a woman’s man gets messed up due to the brutality’s of war, she gets messed up too.
Well the numbers just went up.
I spent over 1/4 of my life wearing this nation's uniform. I agree with Rick.
I hear you, but we need someone who has some experience doing something, someone with accomplishments.
What does Santorum bring to the table? He says the right things, but then so does my conservative-leaning barber.
What is Santorum's experience? What has he done? Well, I'll tell you. He was a sitting Senator who lost his seat in a swing state. That's bad, really bad.
Here's the problem. There's no real alternative here. Mittens? No way. Newt? To this day I can't figure him out.
Personally, I'm hoping for a brokered convention.
So Johnny comes back from war missing his legs and an arm as well as an eye, and maybe his manhood is gone too.
How is this not a bitch for the Woman married to him?
How is this worse than her having been in battle?
And if she dumps his ass because he is broken and no longer a producer, how is this good for him?
I’m not making judgements. I’m just asking serious questions.
Tailgunner Joe, the Rachael Maddow fan, posts another hit piece with a negative spin on legitimate conservative comments.
Some of us remember how Newt stepped in it, when he pronounced women would get infections in the trench on a monthly basis.
Another Paul not attack !
So you peddle Romney AstroTurf here ????
