I work very hard. My parents worked hard. Everything I have is because we all worked for it, right?
I was raised to believe that. And I do believe it. But about six years ago I saw a video that opened my eyes to the possibility there may be other ingredients to success.
It was after worship services at First United Methodist Church one Sunday. A bunch of us all white, educated, and, I daresay, comfortable watched a video. In it, people of all races stood in a line in the middle of a room. The leader of the group asked several questions, telling people to respond by moving forward or stepping back. She said step back if you had ever been followed around a store. Step forward if you expect to inherit at least a little money when your parents die. Step back if youve ever been denied housing because of your race. Step back if you worried that your hairstyle was too ethnic for an employer or if youve ever been stopped for driving your car in the wrong neighborhood.
Wow!
As I watched the video, I realized that even though I have worked hard most of my life, Ive never had to put up with problems like that. Ive felt accepted no matter where I went, and if I didnt, it wasnt because of my race.
I realized that even though my father had literally put blood, sweat and tears into farming land in southwestern Minnesota, that had he been Native American or African American his parents probably wouldnt have even owned land in the first place. And my life would have been much different.

Move to savannah, ga. You will quickly see what it is like to be white and the victim of black racists.
Well put; though I contend the “reparations” have been paid since the “War on Poverty”. Affirmative action is just the reparations that keep on giving (and giving, and giving).
[ Two million steps forward if you have been labeled an oppressor because of your race, or told that your hard work was irrelevant because all men in your race were handed the best things in life on a silver platter, or read ads that encourage everyone except men of your race to apply. ]
So by their logic the sins of your “forefathers” are enough to use as justification to punish you.
Yep. And show me a 100 year old English dictionary where the word ‘racism’ is defined!
‘Racism’ is a Soviet invention for anti-colonial propaganda purposes. You’ve bought? Sorry for ya!
Yeah, that’s what I said, it don’t exist!
I loved this line in Blazing Saddles! One of the classics!
Look at the source: United Methodist Church. Every place I have ever lived in this country the women of the United Methodist Church have been quietly trying to upset the political applecart. I saw them at work in Berkeley and in Texas and other states as well.
Although I am Catholic, I have numerous ancestors who once were founders of various UMC congregations. I really don’t know why the modern members want to undermine our country. I don’t believe my ancestors were like that. Hillary was politicized as a teen by the UMC.
How else would you describe the Nazis' beliefs and acts?
Apparently "racism" ("racisme") was coined in France in the 1930s to describe Hitler's Germany, and it seems to have been an appropriate term of description.
Earlier, before the Russian Revolution in fact, "racialism" and "racialist" were used to describe South Africa or aspects of British imperial rule, and once again there does seem to have been some justification.
When Joe DiMaggio died, the WSJ ran a front page story on his life and career, in which the writer asserted that Joe encountered ‘racism’ at the beginning of his career? Racism? Where did he get started? In Japanese leagues? Or in the National Nigerian Baseball League?
College educated people (or probably even Ivy League, if they work at the WSJ) don’t know the term ethnocentrism! Everything is now ‘RACISM’!
This is the kind of IDIOT that thinks if it rains more on a white farmers land than a black farmer, God (or Ma Nature to these atheist) must be racist.
I am shocked, SHOCKED to see the connection with the United Marxodist Church...
You’re right, it was the Germans who conducted racial experiments and developed racial theories. And here lies the core of the issue. To call someone ‘racist’ is to associate him with the ugly pre-war German racial theories. It works like charm.
My request stands: show me a 100 year old English language dictionary. I’m not asking about a definition of “semiotics” or “structuralism”, but a human prejudice that we now accuse previous generations of going back to Rome and Greece. Absurd!
I am not white...my wife is and the most sickening form of racism we see is from white liberals.
All you need to know about this cretin: “Naomi edits the Duluth Green Party Newsletter.”
Evidently this “church” doesn’t teach the Bible. It’s easier to have billboards.
No you got it wrong pally! The biggest racists out thier are black, so it should read.........It can be hard to see racism if your black, there I fixed it nuff sed!
It seems like all this is about profiling with people out there simply doing their job, partly using the knowledge that they gained while on the job.
I am NOT surprised she watched this race baiting tripe in a METHODIST church.
In perpetuity.
Not only me, but my Caucasian descendents as well.
This is hugh and series!
Has the Congressional Black Caucus weighed in yet? How about the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People?
If I’m gonna be called racist it better be by professionals!
