On his income taxes released today, we see that Romney gave $4 Million tithe donations to Mormon Church. Do Mormons help poor Americans with these donations? Do the Mormons have something similar to Catholic Charities, which helps thousands of Americans (both Catholic and non-Catholics) with basic life needs, medical help, childcare help, education help, etc. The main question is do Mormons use the $4 Million from Romney to ONLY advance the Mormon religion without helping the American poor. Does Romney even know or care what the Mormon Church does with his $4 Million donation? I think that is a fair question.
The very very LAST thing we need is a “conversation” about how religious entities disburse funds. It is obvious where that would lead, and it’s a dark dark place.
Don’t care what the mormons do with their donations as one as they’re not killing babies or eating them. If you don’t like it don’t become a mormon.
These constant anti-mormon threads are disturbing. Doen’t Romney have enough to vote against. IMO it’s anti-American to slam the candidate’s religion.
I predict this current media campaign ends when Romney is no longer a candidate.
It may be a fair question, but it’s a stupid one.
When the government started its welfare programs the religions did not have
to care for the poor. Look what has happened.
The anti-Mormon bigotry on Free Republic amazes me. One group who can’t prove anything is claiming the other group can’t prove anything. From what I learned in Catechism, it’s not very Christ-like.
Good Question
Actually, nobody knows for sure because the LDS Church keeps its financial status ... including the sources, disbursements and amounts of funds ... top secret. Furthermore, they do a much better job of protecting confidentiality than either the Pentagon or CIA.
Most educated guesses, and they are only that, report that the Mormon Church gives only a small portion of their wealth toward support of needy individuals ... something on the order of one to two percent ... and that is restricted almost exclusively to church members. A much more generous amount is spent on recruiting new members.
On that note - when my parents were young marrieds, they had a number of Mormon friends who tried to get them to convert. Mom’s love for her coffee likely saved me from being raised a Mormon.

Romney’s religion and what the institution does with donations is not important to me. What Barack Obama, the Democrats (and Republicans) are doing to taxpayers not even born yet is very important to me.
You are claiming that you have eye witness, first hand experience that a guy can have as many brides in Heaven as he seals?
Dude, that is one foolish post! Grab a cup of coffee, wake your brain up and try again.
If you have a legitimate question it's quite reasonable to do a search first to get a few answers. Most of us do. Had the poster done that, he would have gotten an answer. If he still desired a further discussion, he could have posted to General/Chat or Religion for further enlightenment, which I'm sure would have followed.
A few of us here still wish to avoid constant Mormon bashing so we know to stay off the Religion forum. However, there is no avoiding it when it spills over into News/Activism, where it does not belong. I say this as a Catholic...but then some consider my religion a cult too.
I've been here 13 years - and am a monthly donor - so I PAID for this microphone. Like the OP said, "it's a free country."
How much money an individual gives to his own charity or church (unless it has been deemed a “terrorist” organization), should not be up for political debate. We shouldn’t even go there regardless of how one feels about Romney’s politics. This is normally a RAT ploy.
You don’t trample on and question basic freedoms just to go after your political enemies.
“Do the Mormons have something similar to Catholic Charities, which helps thousands of Americans (both Catholic and non-Catholics) with basic life needs, medical help, childcare help, education help, etc.”

Yes, they do. They were one of the first organizations into Haiti with food, medical supplies and tents for temporary shelter.

And no, I’m NOT a Romney-bot.
“its anti-American to slam the candidates religion.”
You missed that whole Jeremiah Wright thing, didn’t you?
I know I’ve read about them helping out during natural disasters in the U.S. too.
Actually, if I remember right, during the Katrina days, Bush considered putting the Mormons in charge of relief efforts because they already had such a large network of relief workers in place. Of course anyone would have been preferred to the government, but I think it does say something about their experience with providing charity.
It is a fair question.
It just sounds suspiciously, if accidentally, like a loaded question.
Why do feel that what the Mormon Church does with the contributions its members provide is your business. Why is that?
