What is it about this primary season that causes Republicans to go around the bend? The current beneficiary of the anyone but Romney mania is Newt Gingrich, who may actually win the South Carolina primary tomorrow. I find that astonishing. Gingrich has been mostly out of the public view since he retired from Congress 13 years ago. The most surprising feature of this endlessly surprising political year is that, at age 68, Gingrich has made a comeback.
It is hard to make clear-cut statements about the mercurial and often contradictory Gingrich, but one thing we can say with absolute certainty: he will never be President of the United States. Put aside the fact that he lasted only four years as Speaker of the House before resigning in disgrace, leaving Congress with an approval rating around 15%. Forget that he was the father of the earmark. Never mind his notorious lack of self-control and his attacks on free enterprise. Those are all worthy topics for another day, but for the moment lets just focus on the allegations by Newts second ex-wife that hit the press this week. Apart from all the other good reasons why Gingrich will never be President, Marianne Gingrichs sensational allegations snuffed out any possible hope that Newt can beat Barack Obama in 2012.

Gamling: Too few have come. We cannot defeat the armies of Mordor.
Theoden: No. We cannot. But we will meet them in battle nonetheless.
I think the Favre analogy is good. Newt is great at throwing those interceptions at the worst times.
I’m more concerned though about his lack of organizational skills. You need to have those in order to have a ground game during the summer and next fall.
Once the debates end in a couple weeks, we are done with the format and forum that Newt thrives in. After that point, it is up to him to kick ass with an organization and working hard behind the scenes to get money and support.
I hope that is it, otherwise the promise to ZOT! the Mitt-bots begins to look like an empty threat.
What's next, nekkid pitchers on FR?
Call that PIOUS if you will. I'm just funny that way.
I'm thinking you should keep typing that one over and over. The way the progressives and Rinos have been running things in the GOP the last fifty years..I'm thinking being forced out is a badge of honor.
DOWN With dark Count Romula's toadies! May you suck on the toes of a thousand flea infested camels.
Yep. I think most women can see right through her. The mistress who broke up his first family complaining about the mistress that broke up her marriage. Lot’s around here that think they can cast the first stone though.
The politics were complex. And Newt had to spend capital to get legislated what he did.
He made many Republican enemies-—Especially within the lines of the pragmatists.
The Democrats and media held him to a standard out of all proportion to speakers which have followed-—and politicians of his time.
He is no saint. He has made bad calls. But He is the man we need to defeat Zero.
May God Give Newt clear, right thinking and courage.
Many of you attacking Gingrich are too young to remember the stellar job he did in congress. You are letting the RINOs get inside your heads.
Yeah, a happy Mormon could have had three or four wives at once and be "moral," hey? Maybe he could get that worked into the current law, somehow. Guess Newt missed out on this deal.
Yep! Hey McGuire..you got storms out there in Colorado? Tennessee Nana says she got dark clouds and tornado warnings this morning. :) Take care.
“RomneyBot”?
Are you an idiot?
Saying I don’t want Newt to be my pastor does NOT make me a Romneybot! I wouldn’t want a Mormon for my pastor, either.
I also wrote, “I want someone with some boldness who understands that were heading in the wrong direction.” Now try thinking - does Romney strike you as bold? In any WAY as bold? Has bold EVER been applied to Romney? I think not!
I also wrote, “Romney would go to DC and work with people there to make government better.” This may come as a shock to you, but I don’t want more efficient government. I was LESS government! I don’t want someone who will “go to DC and work with people there”! I don’t like the people there!
If government had a position for Chief Financial Officer, I’d vote for Ron Paul to fill it. I’d like to see next year’s budget be around $1,800 Billion for a start. But Ron Paul is absolutely insane in foreign affairs, so I will never vote for him.
So - who is a bold thinker with previous experience balancing budgets? Hmmm????????
religious piety
"BASTION" of "religious piety" no less
Yeah right.
Your use of "piety" here (and elsewhere on this forum) is pejorative.
You're tearing down Gingrich and casting aspersions on religious conservatives.
Your open condescension of religious conservative thought here on FR is glaring by your rhetorical use of the word "piety".
I think you're basically a Mittbot who has carefully weasel-worded his support of Romney ...
... and you're right up to the hairy-edge of expressing disdain for religious conservatives.
There is a group of people going to a restaurant.
There is a menu.
On the Menu is some combination of:
Gingrich
Paul
Romney
Santorum
The restaurant is like a Chinese restauarant, where the specials are sized for the whole group, so you can only choose one item collectively.
The Romney is a dish of poisoned lice and maggots decorated with a tasteful tomato and cucumber garnish, and covered with hollandaise sauce. A sizeable contingent is taken in by the pretty picture, and have heard that some top-gourmets really like the Romney.
The Santorum is a balanced meal with too many empty calories on the side. Some also find the overall flavor and presentation a bit bland and clunky.
The Paul is composed of a thin gruel of lentils with just a little hashish baked in. Loved by some, but a poor health choice for most.
The Gingrich is a spicy dish, also with empty calories, and likely to give acid indigestion at least some times. But a number of people like the taste. It also is well garnished with a variety of complimentary colors. In many settings, it is the only likely alternative to the Romney.
Those are your choices. Pick one. BUT, don’t scare people off of the Santorum or the Gingrich unless you simultaneously let them know what’s in the Paul and the Romney.
If you want to order the Romney, because of its trappings, I suggest you and yours find another group.
My apologies.. I misread your meaning in both of your statements :/
The fix is in. The Big Money has chosen the Black Messiah for television presenter for another term...in return for the billions of OUR dollars he handed over to them.
Gingrich is just the latest “pony” of the dog-and-pony show.
And I’m still taking bets that Obama wins. I have had four takers here on FR so far.
I’m voting for Newt; but I’d like to order a large tureen of the Ron Paul, please. And an iced coffee.
And you don't think Newt can defend himself against that? Newt will destroy Obama in any debate or sound bite, and without a prompter.
Thank you for the apology. I should have written more clearly. I need to learn, after 13 years, that not everyone on FR has read every post I’ve ever made...I can’t assume someone knows who I support, or expect them to dig into my posting history to learn. Sorry for the confusion I caused.
:>)
“Then leave! Go and worship ay the altar of that baby killer Romney.
Geesh!”
So - are you ignorant or just stupid? How could you possibly take my comment about me being in the “anybody BUT Romney camp” and turn that into “worship ay (sic) the altar of that baby killer Romney?”
Ah - I’ll go with ignorant AND stupid!
