(Reuters) - France threatened on Friday to pull out early from the NATO-led war in Afghanistan after a rogue Afghan soldier opened fire on French soldiers, killing four and wounding about 15 others.
The killings in the Taghab valley of Afghanistan's eastern Kapisa province were the latest in a series of incidents in which Afghan troops have turned on Western allies.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said all French operations on the ground were being suspended and his defence minister was dispatched to Afghanistan to clarify the situation.
"If the security conditions are not clearly established then the question of an early return of French forces from Afghanistan will arise," said Sarkozy.
France has almost 4,000 troops in Afghanistan as part of the 130,000-strong NATO-led force there. French troops mainly patrol Kapisa, a mountainous province near Kabul. They are due to leave by around the end of 2013.
NATO said four soldiers were killed. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe told a news conference about 15 others were wounded, eight of them seriously.

Sarkozy will only send his elite troops to round up bunny rabbits in the future.
Anyone interested in buying a French military rifle? It has never been fired and only dropped once.
White flag French.
[shakes head in wonderment]
The French have lost 78 men in Afghanistan. Give them a little respect.
1,878 American soldiers have been killed in Afganistan . Give them a ‘’little respect’’. The Frenchies can tough it out a little longer.
France is as France does.
I'm afraid I don't understand your comment. My respect for our troops is not lessened by acknowledging the soldiers of other countries who have died fighting along side them.

Ze french?????? PTOOOEEEY.....I spit on the ground at their mention.
My late grandfather fought in 1918 to give the French their freedom back. An uncle of mine had to do it 20 years later in 1944. 78 dead still leaves the French 1,800 short of what our country has given. Sorry, but given France’s over-all conduct in military matters this colors my view of them. But at least there are 78 Frenchmen with honor.
Huh? Isn't that the job of your military?
It's only "workplace violence", nothing to see here, move along, monsieurs et medames...
Keep in mind it was a French military man, Ferdinand Foch, who condemned the Treaty Of Versaille, saying that, "This is not a peace. It is an armistice for twenty years." The treaty of Versaille, League of Nations, etc. were constructs largely forged and influenced by Wilson and his progressive coterie...something we should all be more aware of as so many conservatives rally around a 2012 candidate who describes himself as a, "realpolitik Wilsonian."
Foch was also the man who said “The best defense is a good offense’’. A Frenchman said that, can you imagine?
In World War I, France suffered 1.3 million battle deaths, the US suffered 100,000 battle deaths. So by your logic, we were 1.2 million short.
We should be pulling out also.
Why should they?
Why should they? Do they give a rip about survival?
