Newt Gingrich: Unscathed by Marianne’s Cheating Charges in South Carolina?
thedailybeast.com ^ | 1/19/2012 | Andrew Romano

The second Mrs. Gingrich is creating a media firestorm on the eve of the South Carolina primary. But voters there seem inclined to take it out on the press.

So you think the latest revelations about Newt Gingrich’s sloppy personal life—you know, the whole tawdry to-do about him asking his second wife Marianne for an “open marriage” so he could sleep with his then-mistress Callista at the same time he was delivering speeches around the country on family values—will sink the former House Speaker in the deeply Christian, devoutly conservative state of South Carolina?

Think again.

If most of Gingrich’s Palmetto State supporters are like Joseph and Kathy Wilson—and the vast majority of those I spoke to Thursday were—then Newt is in luck.

I met the Wilsons on the waterfront in handsome Beaufort, S.C. (Beaufort is where they filmed The Big Chill and The Prince of Tides. It’s all wraparound porches, Spanish moss, and Pat Conroy vistas. You get the picture.) Joseph, 67, was wearing a camouflage cap, aviators, and a brown, yellow, and red flannel shirt; Kathy, 64, was in a white puffy coat and a long red scarf.

We were all waiting for Gingrich to arrive, so I figured I’d strike up a conversation. The first reports about Marianne’s ABC interview had just surfaced on Twitter a few minutes earlier, as I was pulling into town from Charleston; I assumed I’d be the one to break the news to them, and I was curious to see how they would react.

“So, have you heard about this thing with Newt’s second wife?” I asked.

The anti Romneys were starting to get traction with the tax return issue and the funds in the Cayman Islands issue putting the onus on Romney to release the returns before the SC primary and defend his Cayman Islands account. Why this story is harmful right now is that tonight’s sound bites coming from her mouth from her interview are going to flood the media for the next 2 days and that is all we are going to see taking the focus off Romney’s issues. Even tonight’s debates will be a non event next to this story because unfortunately salacious personal stuff is what draws media viewers.

Conservatives are already aware of Newt’s checkered past. He’s already apologized. His affairs are already priced in.
We don't want to marry him, but we must have someone who fights to take on Obama.
We're hiring a lawyer, not a pastor.

That’s what worries me too about a Newt candidacy. Newt made some enemies during his years in Congress, on both sides of the aisle. And their memories are long.

I think enough people see this for exactly what it is on the part of the media; enough are sufficiently fed up with this kind of media gotcha crap on Conservatives that it will have exactly the opposite effect intended! GO NEWT!!

“Even tonight’s debates will be a non event next to this story because unfortunately salacious personal stuff is what draws media viewers.”

Irrelevant.

Those media “viewers” are mostly dunder-head liberal females who would never vote for Newt anyway. I know who the National Enquirer demographic is. They’ll be more interested in slugging down a two-liter bottle of coke, eating a jumbo bag of chips and reading Madame Zooey’s latest horoscope, rather than ruminating about whether or not to vote for Newt. If anyone wants to know what these harridan slugs are interested in, read the Enquirer, and especially pay attention to the ads.

Mr. Pope knew his audience well and became a millionaire with that knowledge.

Call me what ever you want, Newt is not Conservative just a big government junkie. Anyone who has praise for FDR, and got kicked out of Congress because he was hiding the fact that members wrote bad checks, while screwing around on wife 1, 2 and wife 3 never leaves his side is not conservative...just a progressive republican who can’t keep a vow to a woman, let alone a nation.

Now Newt proposes keeping illegals and having township draft boards to pick which ones stay. Conservative my butt.

“She is a liar as there is no such thing as an Open Marriage”

I wonder if the ABC interviewer asked Marianne whether she remembers that before she was cheating with Newt on his first wife she was dating another married man who had 3 kids. She broke up with him and then hit up Newt.

No way. The MSM will treat Merrianne like a hero. Instead, the MSM will attack Calista and accuse her of having an affair with Newt while he was married.

I hope this is the case...it could be but man...that non ideological middle of the populace

who must be some first class whimsical and extremely gullible dumbasses

well...you just never know

look how that DWI bomb on Bush almost cost him the election the last 3 days..when all polls showed him ahead into the final days and then the bomb

this time...it's like jump ball...the Marianne bomb and no poll again really tween now and Saturday

my gut is ...in South Carolina where Newt's red meat sells...he will do ok and his wind is to his back with the Big Mo

and the Beast is lib...so I doubt they would proclaim it for nothing

the Left fears Newt...they know Obama is vulnerable...unlike Obama himself apparently

and if they think they will likely lose you know they prefer to lose to Mitt...he is pretty much not much different than they are on social issues and judges

Newt on the other hand is Satan to them on Culture War stuff and if he truly born again then he will just be more resolute

we may pull it off and I can change my tagline

I’m not voting for a pastor. And I don’t trust a woman with an axe to grind. She’s had how long to talk about this?

that is an excellent post dear...the rabid dogs of the hate Newt brigade would do well to think about it

It has come down to basically Newt or Mitt..or the Nut

It's not hard for me...once I saw Sarah would not run..how strange the way she told us...anyhow...then I knew.

Newt...the only other person with that "IT" factor

I salute Melody's Mommy!
