Newt Gingrich: Unscathed by Marianne’s Cheating Charges in South Carolina?
thedailybeast.com ^ | 1/19/2012 | Andrew Romano

The second Mrs. Gingrich is creating a media firestorm on the eve of the South Carolina primary. But voters there seem inclined to take it out on the press.

So you think the latest revelations about Newt Gingrich’s sloppy personal life—you know, the whole tawdry to-do about him asking his second wife Marianne for an “open marriage” so he could sleep with his then-mistress Callista at the same time he was delivering speeches around the country on family values—will sink the former House Speaker in the deeply Christian, devoutly conservative state of South Carolina?

Think again.

If most of Gingrich’s Palmetto State supporters are like Joseph and Kathy Wilson—and the vast majority of those I spoke to Thursday were—then Newt is in luck.

I met the Wilsons on the waterfront in handsome Beaufort, S.C. (Beaufort is where they filmed The Big Chill and The Prince of Tides. It’s all wraparound porches, Spanish moss, and Pat Conroy vistas. You get the picture.) Joseph, 67, was wearing a camouflage cap, aviators, and a brown, yellow, and red flannel shirt; Kathy, 64, was in a white puffy coat and a long red scarf.

We were all waiting for Gingrich to arrive, so I figured I’d strike up a conversation. The first reports about Marianne’s ABC interview had just surfaced on Twitter a few minutes earlier, as I was pulling into town from Charleston; I assumed I’d be the one to break the news to them, and I was curious to see how they would react.

“So, have you heard about this thing with Newt’s second wife?” I asked.

She is a liar as there is no such thing as an Open Marriage.

If only the left weren’t so darn predictable, I might be a little surprised.

When I heard this ex-wife "open marriage," "they listen to what I say, they don't care what I do" thing, although it’s old news, I think it’s hurtful news. I think Newt's our best shot but I think he may be in deep do-do. Here’s what I posted possibly prematurely:

“Romney’s a businessman, not a fighter,” Joseph finally said. “But Gingrich will tear Obama’s butt up. That’s the bottom line.”

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

We have a winner folks.

I might be wrong, but I don’t see this going anywhere. A bitter ex-wife and a news media trying to knock off the latest Republican to surge over a twenty year old story that somehow just hadn’t been told before. It’s sooo transparent.

The left wing media live in glass houses.

In fly over country, we can see when they are lying to us.

(That’s pretty much always)

Indeed! The difference about what that media says about Romney....as opposed to Gingrich (or anyone else that they perceive to be an authentic reformer) ought to tell us all something!

They are quite afraid!

I’m not voting for a pastor. And I don’t trust a woman with an axe to grind. She’s had how long to talk about this?

Newt Gingrich has shown himself to be a genuine man's man and is red-blooded heterosexual whom women obviously enjoy. Contrast that to the effeminate B. Hussein Obama who is, at best, sexually confused and is more than likely a homosexual. Even his so-called "wife" recoils in the company of the limp-wristed Barry.

Newt has a whole lot of flaws, but he has one bizarre strength: we all know he is a sleaze, so he is essentially immune to scandal. Wife #2 (Mariane) was the other woman to wife #1, so it’s somewhat less shocking that Newt cheated on Marianne with wife #3. Throw in the fact that Obama is an existential danger to our survival as a free country, and I find myself willing to support a viable anti-Obama candidate who disgusts me as a person. While I would be happy to see Cain, DeMint, Bachmann, Santorum, Palin, or any of a number of others stop Romney and then defeat Obama, Santorum is the only viable not-Romney left besides Newt, and Newt looks like a stronger candidate. It appears that a significant number of conservatives agree with me.

Sweet little Marianne got Newt my vote in Arizona’s primary next month. I’m fed up with the ‘RATS and others parading out all of these bimbos to destroy all of our candidates. They can all KMA on Main St. and I’ll give them 15 minutes to draw a crowd.

This is the manly reaction I have missed from conservatives this cycle. This is the reaction I’ve been waiting and hoping for. Newt has the nomination. Santorum is dull and will continue to collapse. It’s time to rally around Newt, start targeting any fool in congress who endorsed Romney, and also set our sights on Obama.

Gingrich got to where he is in the polls under the assumption that he brought divorce papers to the death bed of his first wife so he could marry the second (which is the one doing the interviews).

If that didn’t hurt him...

(since then we have learned that she was not on her death bed and she is alive today but still he got his support before the truth came out)

So, which event would be more damning?

ABC’s attempt to unleash this story got away from them, and the fangs got pulled early. This was not supposed to come out until AFTER the SC primary, going into the Florida primary, but like the batter who swings just a little ahead of the ball, either it was a swing and a miss, or it goes way foul.

Together with the withdrawal of Rick Perry, this could turn into an unexpected bonus for Newt. A sizable cross section of SC voters, like Americans everywhere, are tired of the blatant attempts by the media (and in particular ABC News) to try to “manage” the release of these “October surprises”, meant to appeal to passions of the moment.

In a way, I feel sorry for Marianne, but criminy, lady, isn’t it time you moved on?

Some 95% of the personal woe in this world is self-induced.
