An InsiderAdvantage poll conducted Wednesday night has former House Speaker Newt Gingrich now leading the Republican primary race in South Carolina.
The poll of likely Republican primary voters has Gingrich with 32 percent, ahead of Mitt Romney who trailed close behind at 29 percent.
The results are a significant reversal for Romney, who had led polls before Tuesday's Fox News debate. A poll conducted by InsiderAdvantage last Sunday showed Romney with a double-digit lead over Gingrich.
The InsiderAdvantage poll is the first major South Carolina survey after the debate. Gingrich has been crediting with winning the debate.
The poll found that support for Ron Paul and Rick Santorum is faltering, with both pulling 15 and 11 percent, respectively.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry finished last with just 3 percent of the vote. Three percent of those polled selected "other candidate" and 7 percent said they had no opinion.
The survey polled 718 registered Republican voters.

Huckabee already endorsed Mitt Romney.
Most woman wont answer that phone again once they realize they were just a booty call the first time.
"In 2008, Obama won 56 percent of the women vote, 13 points more than won by Republican Sen. John McCain, according to the national exit poll. Four years later, support for Obama and Democrats among women has dropped off sharply.
During the 2010 midterm elections, for example, women divided evenly for Democratic and Republican House candidates 49 percent to 49 percent the best showing for Republicans among women in a national U.S. House vote since 1982."
Recent polling show their numbers could be at record lows for 2012.
he’ll school them like he schooled Juan
Yes, the big debate under these new circumstances, and I hope no one minds if I sweat it, preemptively. Pressure is octaves higher politically after his break out, and now this. It will be personally stressful for Newt to be seen decidedly dodging the fall out.
Someone said yesterday that Newt should answer it, keep it simple and close it down. Evidently, starting with the daughters, I am betting that that Newt is not unprepared, that he has some surrogates close to the Marianne situation who are in-the-know, who can increasingly raise the heat on Marianne’s obsessions with Newt. Without a tape it’s slander; maybe true, maybe exaggerated, maybe manufactured.
Thanks for the upbeat.
I agree. Welcome to Free Republic!
“the msm, RINOS etc have to stop Newt”
For the RINO’s still in Congress, they know REVENGE is going to come riding in on a black steed if Newt wins this thing.
The Media knows that Gingrich can, and will, put them in their place, using their own rhetoric against them
I think a Gingrich Presidency would truly be a sight to behold. Remember that Reagan had to work within the confines of a Democrat-controlled Congress. A President Gingrich likely won’t have to.
We need to shut down open primaries at our precinct meetings on election night in our state following casting our ballot. Take it to county and then on to state conventions. Gotta stop it. I sure agree.
I agree. He has a team plan, to sweep the Congress and gain control. If it works as well as the contract with America, I think the control of both houses will be Pubbies, even if Newt falls short. He's might need someone to help keep him focused though, if he wins.
if Santorum endorses Romney he is done as a national Conservative figure.. not to say he ever was one
ZOT!
Just when I was going to reply to you .... again.
Isnt it ironic that Newt (through his PAC surrogates) have to run ads that use Michelle Bachmanns voice as endorsement even though she has insisted he not use her voice as an endorsement?
Face it Newtie...if you cannot control your surrogates when Bachmann has instructed you not to use her voice in your ads, how do expect we should trust a worthless worm to follow suit on his own instructions for Romneys attack PAC ads? They’ve been running for days after she’s demanded a retraction, yet Newt is not complying.
You and I sweat it- -:) It’s near 2Am, and I’m still wired from the poll. But, I don’t think these guys sweat it-— they’re professionals- debating is what they do. Gingrich is the Mike Jordan of debate— can he have an off game- sure; but, more likely he’ll play to form.
As to this ex-wife thingy- I’d pull a Clinton. Newt needs a “real diversion”, a news event to trump Marianne and control the news cycle. I was thinking Sarah Palin coming in to address some Tea Party Rallies on Friday. Sarah beats Marianne— at least in my book. -:)
If you were suggesting that they would ask him about it at the debate- I’d actually be surprised-— but it would be a mistake on their part-— he’ll have a sincere human answer that will make them feel like idiots for asking.
Well if the Ricks decide to exit, Newt can challenge mittens and Paul to a Lincoln Douglas style debate, and mitt will look like a chicken if he doesn’t.
And Newt can get some practice for Obama by following Romney around and rebutting him.
Yeah...and Newt picks Cain as VP....dims heads explode all over.
Hannity said some unkind words about FR in a huff a couple of years ago. I’m sorry I don’t recall the subject or the reason. Rush still reads FR and whenever FReepers get through, Rush is always gracious when we mention Free Republic. We can easily tell that by several of his shows. John Stossel is another longtime, active FReeper and Jessie Watters from BOR’s. I think it’s fair to claim, that a lot of media types get opinions and news from FR.
Was Beck a poster here as well? I would surmise as he mentioned us by name in one of his books. (At least a Lurker)
I never remember Glenn Beck posting here or being a member. Not under the name Glenn Beck, but I could be wrong.
One of the LSM already asked him about it in context of character, and they asked the other candidates about it first. I remember Perry said something like If you cheat on your wife, you’ll cheat on your business partner.
Great ideas. Both. Sarah couldn’t hurt among his base in South Carolina, a great diversion, but her fans tend to make her the center of the universe and maybe not so much whomever is at her side. I also have a feeling her FOX contract may have her more in check somewhat as her contract plays out, on getting too creative about her outside appearances. I don’t know.
On the poll today, I dismiss it somewhat since it sure didn’t factor in this evening’s hardball breaking news. It will unfortunately factor in on election day and no poll will capture it entirely before then. What if it is a wash?
What if it wipes out enough of the gain to matter? Blast, the Rick’s being out would sure help Newt depose Romney. Talk about “clingers”!
