A Gallup survey done across 20 sub-Saharan African countries on the main sources of lighting for households saw Mauritius fair best, with 100% of respondents saying this was provided by power lines. South Africa came in second at 80% in terms of households with grid supplied power for lighting, followed by Ghana (67%), Nigeria (66%) and Cameroon (65%).
At the bottom of the list in this survey for electrical grid power supplying household lighting was Liberia at 4%, followed by Chad and Burkina Faso at 8%.
In Chad, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, Madagascar, Uganda and Kenya the dominant source for household lighting was reported to be fuel lamps. Niger and Guinea households reported flash lights as their dominant source of lighting.
The same survey also reflected upon the amount of days in which people who have electricity at their workplaces in African countries experienced power outages during a working week. Here, South Africa, Botswana and Kenya faired best. The Central African Republic, Nigeria and Liberia fared worst with workers with electrical access experiencing outages for more than 50% of the total time.
Results of the Gallup survey were based on face-to-face interviews with 1,000 adults, aged 15 and older, conducted during 2010 and 2011 in Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

I doubt that Mauritius has any resemblance to what we think of as Sub-Saharan Obozoland.
More like Madagascar, I would think.
I have been there. 30x40 mile island with a population of over 1 milllion. it is a stable democracy... nothing like Madagascar.

Yes, of course it is much smaller, but I am referring
only in relation to the African continent, and
both being under various European rule from the recent past.
I communicated with both during my ham radio days, as well as the Seychelles.
Mauritania is freer then the US, now this. Jeez, I might visit it. Think they accept whites?
Mauritius is an island off Africa; Mauritania is an unstable place with a scattered population.
I wonder where Texas would rank on that list...once the president is done shutting down our power plants.

When we were 3B9ZV we had a QSO with 3B9AE - and gave him a new country since he was the only guy on the island till we arrived!
The last post was from my Cell-phone so not elaborate. Mauritius is a lot more like India than anything in Africa (also when to South Africa on that trip - thus flying OVER Madagascar - which was a communist country at the time.) The people are friendly, and industrious. This is really the only country in the entire region that is both self-sufficient, and a stable democracy. They bare NO comparison to ANYTHING on the African continent as far as their political situation is concerned - or anything else in the Indian Ocean for that matter.
Compare them to South Africa fer instance. SA has a huge amount of racial strife due to it’s chequered history. The island economy is based on both production, fishing and tourism. They get a lot of tourism from Europe. South Africa’s economy is based on production and precious earths of various sorts.
Anyway - I had a great time there. We stayed with an amateur who worked for the US Embassy for over a week, then took three days to go to Rodrigues where we stayed in the only hotel on the Island. We made about 10000 QSOs in that period of time...pretty dang busy for two guys in a hotel room.

Prior to my house and station burning to the ground in 1990,
I had worked every country that could be worked and was a member of “DXCC Top of the Honor Roll”. At the time I was K4ZKZ, but when the world’s top DX operator and good friend, W4EX, a blind man, died, his wife was able to pass his call on to me in the mid ninetys.
Having been outside of the US since 2004, my radio days are over, but I do have an FT-890 back in Tennessee.
Maybe I could have it sent over here to Philippines and follow in the footsteps of DU7SV.
Think nothing of it; I only knew because I collect foreign coins.
