Actor Gene Hackman, 81, was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami on Friday after a car struck the bicycle he was riding in Islamorada, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Hackman was heading southbound near the 88 mile marker on the Old Highway around 3 p.m. when struck from behind by the right front fender of a 2007 Toyota Tundra driven by Kathryn Rodriguez, 60, or Islamorada, FHP Sergeant Thomas E. Pikul said.

Because seriously, folks, people driving tanks SUVs have a harder time seeing objects to the side and below of their tanks SUVs. They are therefore much more likely to strike bicyclists, pedestrians, pets ... and children.

I drive a Tundra and I have a lot better field of vision in my Tundra than any passenger car I've ever driven.

No need for a Tundra in Florida. Not if you're just toolin' around town.

Well the next time you're in an accident in your little death trap compact you'll only wish you had been driving a Tundra.

Technically, youre correct. The tundra runs along the northern edges of Russia and other countries whose land run up around the arctic circle or thereabouts.

That’s not the Tundra. I drive the Highlander and Tundra towers over me on the highway.

My friend bought a big truck, has to step way up to get in. So he told me lots of people were honking horns at him on the road. Why's that? Well, he'd go to make a lane change or right turn and someone to the right would honk. I said did you look before making the move. "Well I can't see below the right side of the truck! If they're there, they need to get out of the way." Jesus, I screamed at him that someday he would kill someone, or someone else would kill him as a result of his actions! Sadly, he passed away this year, but others are now safer.

Toyota Tundra-based full-size sport-ute

What about the difference between SUV and pickup do you NOT understand? The Sequoia is a SUV that uses the frame, suspension, engine, and transmission of the Tundra full sized pickup truck. The Sequoia IS NOT a pickup truck, and the Tundra IS NOT a SUV!

Militant bicyclists drive me nuts because they are so stupid. They are dumber than a bag of hammers stupid. They are so stupid, that I personally witnessed a group of spandex clad militants riding 6 abreast on a country road intentionally preventing a Ford Mustang from passing them. Little did they know, the Mustang was a unmarked Sheriffs deputy, and they were all cited for impeding traffic.

2. When bicyclists are required to pay registration, insurance, and get annual inspection fees as well as hold a valid license, they may have a point about equal road access. Until then, stay on the damn sidewalk.

Or what?

As soon as you overturn a century worth of law and tradition in every state in the union and every country on the globe, I'll be happy to oblige you.

Until then you can fume all you want. But while you are stewing in your own bile, keep your eyes open, move over where appropriate, and courteously share the road, as the law requires, please.

But after you completely rearrange traffic law to suit your feelings of entitlement, giving bicycling license exams to seven year old children would be a really good use of taxpayer funds in these times of budget surpluses. And government keeping a register of all the Huffys in the neighborhood is just the sort of thing every conservative can support.

Vehicles that were built for off-road driving should stay that way ... i.e. off the road

Your attraction to a site like FR, that is in favor a modicum of individual liberty, is what?

So true. I used to spend a lot of time in Islamorada and I know exactly where mile marker 88 is. Not a great place to ride a bike. I’m glad he’s OK.

Good for your Mr. Mercat! I love riding with all my buddies. Burrrrr...riding all winter in Kansas is quite the feat!

Now I feel like a wimp! Our group won’t ride if temp is below 38. :)

My God, what a bunch of sissies. That's about the temp you should simply be adding a layer and switching from your road shoes to your Lake boots. A windchill above -10 and it's a go. But you need to be home in about an hour, before the inner layers get too damp.
