Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) said Wednesday the Republican presidential candidates need to listen to Ron Paul and would benefit from integrating some of his libertarian ideas into their platform.
"One of the things that's hurt the so-called conservative alternative is saying negative things about Ron Paul," DeMint told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham. "I'd like to see a Republican Party that embraces a lot of the libertarian ideas."
Paul's views on foreign policy have taken plenty of heat from his rivals for the GOP nomination, who have slammed his views on the topic as outside of the mainstream of Republican thought. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) called his views "dangerous" before dropping out of the race.
DeMint said he does not agree with the Texas congressman on everything but that the rest of the GOP presidential field should capture some of what Paul's been talking about for years because the Republican Party "needs" the libertarian movement.
"You don't have to agree with everything he's saying, but if the other candidates miss some of the wisdom about what he's saying about monetary policy ... that will be to our detriment," DeMint said.
DeMint, who is an influential conservative lawmaker with a key role in the Tea Party movement, said the debate within the Republican Party he's most comfortable with is between conservatives and libertarians.
Paul v. Obama...I vote Paul
U can’t talk about Mitt or Ron Paul!!!!
U want to be banned?..shhhhhhhhhh.
Now, that damn Romney!
Polls this far out don’t mean much but yes Paul does better then anyone against Zero except Mitt. Both beat Zero or are within the margin of beating him.
Wow, its been a while since I heard that joke.
A lot of Pauls ideas are good but I heard a SOROS sponsored pack sponsors him. So Paul is a crazy tease spoiler.
U c Romney & Obama as the same? So you would write in Palin?
Just asking.
I wish DeMint would run.
second is Perry,
next is Santo,
But if it comes down to Mitt or Ron Paul, Im going Ron Paul. I despise Mitt AND he is not electable.”
That's kinda where I am too. Romney just said today that what he did at Bain was no different than what Obama did with the auto companies. Imagine that. An election year where the issue is jobs, jobs, jobs, and he says:
Romneynomics = Obamanomics
I sure hope one of the first 3 on the list gets the nomination. If Romney gets it, I think he could stop us from gaining the senate as well as endangering the house.
Why would you waste a vote writing in someone that didn’t even run? Seriously?
DeMint as always doesn’t disappoint. The GOP establishment just doesn’t care about the Tea Party or small government.
We need Paul Ryan to step up the plate!
Any President willing to make the changes necessary (as seen through the eyes of a strict-constructionist conservative like myself) will be met with anarchy anyway...
We're circling the drain, my friend, it's good to be old, hence my reluctance to waste yet another vote. The calluses on my nose need time to heal.
“I like Ron Paul, but Ive seen many zotted here promoting Paul so I try to just defend him and not promote him. I wish I could promote his ideas without getting zotted. But I will obey the rules, just saying”
It’s a conservative website and not a Libertarian one. There is small l libertarian aspects to conservatism. Former Paul people have come in here and made it worse, which is why the owner is fed up with his supporters - in conjunction with disagreements on a wide range of conservative issues.
Just sayin.
It’s only one vote...but more importantly, it’s mine.
That is how I see it, the only candidate that really is for small government is Paul all the rest just talking the talk that they have no intention of walking should they get elected. How many times do we let ourselves be fooled? If we blow this election our children will curse us as the generation that lost the country to Marxism. Assuming a country survives the financial collapse that is right around the corner.
DeMint and other GOP are showing we conservatives what we need to do to get respect and to get heard.
THREATEN TO LEAVE...
They have zero respect for Paul, nor the majority of his policy ideas....remember even in the economic sphere, he has has accomplished NOTHING....ZILCH ....NADA.
The fear him leaving.
Conservatives should learn a a critical lesson from that.
Exactly right.
“DeMint as always doesnt disappoint”
Last elections’ early endorsement of Romney and today’s “non-endorsement - endorsement”...
was extremely disappointing.
Jim DeMint makes a very, very good point.
Yes I concur although he had little choice...follow Lindsey Graham endorsing McLame?
But your point is well taken thanks for the reminder.
At least Senator DeMint did not outright endorse Willard as the GOP nominee in the SC primary, which would have sealed the outcome in Romney's favor.
As it is, the SC state GOP apparatchik is pro Romney. They have assimilated the movers and shakers in the Tea Party, and with Newt,Santorum,Perry and Paul draining votes from each other, the Myth will rap the nomination up in two weeks. The conservative guys will find money and momentum disappearing.
