Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) said Wednesday the Republican presidential candidates need to listen to Ron Paul and would benefit from integrating some of his libertarian ideas into their platform.
"One of the things that's hurt the so-called conservative alternative is saying negative things about Ron Paul," DeMint told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham. "I'd like to see a Republican Party that embraces a lot of the libertarian ideas."
Paul's views on foreign policy have taken plenty of heat from his rivals for the GOP nomination, who have slammed his views on the topic as outside of the mainstream of Republican thought. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) called his views "dangerous" before dropping out of the race.
DeMint said he does not agree with the Texas congressman on everything but that the rest of the GOP presidential field should capture some of what Paul's been talking about for years because the Republican Party "needs" the libertarian movement.
"You don't have to agree with everything he's saying, but if the other candidates miss some of the wisdom about what he's saying about monetary policy ... that will be to our detriment," DeMint said.
DeMint, who is an influential conservative lawmaker with a key role in the Tea Party movement, said the debate within the Republican Party he's most comfortable with is between conservatives and libertarians.
Not a Ron Paul fan but I myself have said that the attacks on him are the wrong way to go.
He’s a symptom of a problem that the GOP doesn’t want to face and eliminating him won’t make the problem go away.
HAH! This will cause some inner turmoil in many around here.
I am really concerned about the fact Paul has said nothing negative about Willard hardly at all... and romney is used to buying the people and things he needs...
congratulations on the new baby!! are you doing your share of the 2 a.m.’s?
Spare us your carefully selected propaganda and blogs bs to f
To fool and rewrite history on this dangerous tool of the left.
The Crazy nutter who trashed Ron Reagan and blamed us for
9/11 which this Code Pink supporting crazy said during the debates !
This Loon called our troops war criminals during Desert Storm and
Has attacked Israel and supported the code pink Hamas flotilla against Israel .
This loon supports Iran getting the Bomb !
Stop wasting your time peddling the Dem party
Candidate here .
I like his monetary and fiscal policies; also the philosophy that if bad behavior goes unrewarded there is less of it (don’t give services like healthcare, education and welfare to illegal aliens and many won’t come).
I do not agree with his foreign policies. If everyone in the whole world were libertarian it would work but he needs to realize that there are evil people in the world that want to destroy our freedom, and not because of anything we did.
Methinks Free Republic isn't as "free" as it used to be...
Personally I would rather have Rand stay in the Senate than have him as VP.
We need more Senators with an honest respect for the Constitution and the VP is almost entirely a ceremonial position. You know that Romney is not going to pay attention to any advice given by Rand.
So what would Rand get for the honor of being VP? Side lined. He would be a powerless politician who would have to tow the President's line or be banished to the wilderness by the party.
Romney would take the country down the his Liberal Lite path and Rand would only make a difference if Romney died or if Romney was a Two termer and Rand got a shot at being the follow on GOP candidate in 2020. Those are long odds.
I would rather have Rand in the Senate and have him run for Senate Majority Leader after we take the Senate in November.
To the headline: why would I listen to a crazy guy?
Ron Paul is a 9/11 truther - just saying, and it’s enough.
Demint is right.
It’s not about “supporting Ron Paul”.
The task is actually for other candidates to recognize that some Ron Paul supporters can be attracted to some of the positive Libertarian economic positions of Paul, and his deep sense towards personal Liberty.
The task is not to attack Paul for his nuttiness on some issues, but to speak directly and positively for some the good Libertarian positions many Paul supporters are attracted to.
Trying to bury the facts that Paul support comes from Dems!
Trying to bury the fact that
Paul bots attack Rick ‘s wife and
Grade school kids coming out of a NH restaurant
And acted like wild dogs along with their buddies from Occup??!
You must be very proud
I agree and I don’t think Rand is interested either.
My 1st choice is Newt,
second is Perry,
next is Santo,
But if it comes down to Mitt or Ron Paul, I’m going Ron Paul. I despise Mitt AND he is not electable.
Ron Paul endorsed by Code Pink - nuff said
Ron Paul endorsed Cynthia MaKinney - nuff said
Well I have not seen the Anti-Ron rule but it is a rule that you do not post Pro-Romney articles. John will not tolerate pro-Rom articles.
It is obvious that Romney is NOT a conservative so I dont have a problem with that. It is Johns site. He is entitled to run it as he sees fit. I am happy to enjoy the fruits of his work.
And Ron Paul is???
Well, at least you didn't call him a RINO.
Unfortunately, you can't see that DeMint's warning about Republican's adopting the language of the left to harness free enterprise to the purposes of big government. But go ahead and call yourself a conservative. After all, there's no proof required.
Well said, Senator. Much of the vitriol directed at Congressman Paul is mean-spirited, misguided, and downright hysterical.
You men Jim, don't you? Jim Thompson?
