96% of Negative Super PAC Spending Since Iowa Has Targeted Gingrich
WSJ - blog ^ | Jan 10, 2012 | By Jeremy Singer-Vine

Nearly all negative spending by super PACs in the presidential campaign over the past week has gone toward opposing Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker who trailed badly in polls leading up to today’s New Hampshire primary, according to a WSJ analysis of expenditures reported to the Federal Election Commission.

In total, anti-Gingrich super PAC Restore Our Future disclosed $89,962 in expenditures opposing Mr. Gingrich’s candidacy since the Jan. 3 caucuses in Iowa, where he came in fourth. That’s 96% of all negative spending in the past week by super PACs, the newest and most controversial form of political action committee, which can raise unlimited sums of money but aren’t permitted to coordinate with the campaigns.

Here’s how negative spending by super PACs looked over the past week, according to our analysis of expenditures submitted to FEC:

Negative Super PAC Spending Since Iowa Caucus

Newt Gingrich   $89,961.75
Mitt Romney   $1,548.41
Rick Santorum   $1,276.23
Ron Paul   $1,121.73

I don’t thinks this holds a candle to what FOX news has spent to kill Newt and support their guy Romney.... and they attack 24/7.

The monied interests don’t want to see Newt get the nomination. Makes one think Newt is the right choice.

South Carolina is an open primary in a year when Democrats have an incumbent President. Plenty of Democrats and Libertarians are going to crossover to vote for Willard and RuPaul.

SC is not a good gauge of things.

Rush is an entertainer, so he’s going to have a tendency to say whatever is most divisive at the moment. I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes more $$$ having Democrats in office.

I listened to Rush today and I was floored at how he attacked Newt. I could not believe my ears. A lady caller got through to him and called him on his accusations and you could tell Rush was verbally shaken by it, like a kid caught in the candy jar.

After she hung up, Rush was scurrying to cover up his words with some false bravado and self-agrandizement, but it was too late by then. It was the biggest display of humiliation by him for the over 20 years I have been a listener.

So now we have Rush caving in to push Romney; I'm thinking a Romney candidacy will be worse than McCain before he drafted Sarah Palin.

Newt has plenty of baggage, but the person to beats obama will need the moxie, and intelligence, that Gingrich posses to make it happen. When you need muscle to win the day over a thug like obama, you don't worry about whether or not he's been divorced, or protocol.

Romney and the rest of the field will let obama rattle them to the point of doing a "Rick Perry" and losing their train of thought. Timidity is NOT what we need to beat obama. Romney reminds me of the sissy kid who will cow-tow to all the bad guys to win favor and keep from getting his butt kicked, or at least his hair mussed.

I don't think obama can keep up with Newt, either intellectually, or verbally. We've got to decide who we want to slay "gOliath"...Pee Wee Herman, or Attilla the Hun.

So while we're letting GOP "insiders" mold our minds into being "romneyites", we're letting the stomp our only hope in taking out obama...electionwise, that is.

If Rush keeps up this promotion of Romney, he's going to lose his 20+ year reputation as America's Conservative Voice...at least with me.

I used to look at FOX only when Sarah was on. Now I don't look at FOX at all. I am much happier and my blood pressure is down :)

Fox is a RINO sewer. 95% of the people on FOX belittle Conservatives. Even seeing the vile Rove for even 1 femto-second would be too much.

I am concerned because Rush Limbaugh is saying Newt is now very angry and is just in it now to get Romney. That will stop the money flow to Newt if people think he is not in it to win! Fox keeps it going calling him angry. Hannity said tonight Newt said yesterday he is just trying to slow Romney down in NH with the Bain attack.

gave up with talk radio for the most part and phony’s like Hannity.

In the end they have their homo elitist liberal pals or sponsors they don;’t want to upset.

In the end do we ever hear them saying get on the phones and call so and so, do we hear them saying I and other talk show hosts are getting together and telling our listeners about this or that and we want you all to contact the so and so?

No they say this and that like a broken record, some are just more entertaining than others.

I did not catch all of Rush but I think his point was that conservatives should not be attacking capitalism. Rush has been pretty outspoken about how the elites are pushing Romney.

That’s a dramatic simplification of what Rush said! Newt wasn’t criticized for going negative.

Newt was criticized for using liberal Democrat talking points and running to Romneys left!

Yes, and the minute that Newt responded, he was accused of “going nuclear”!

Yes, he did, and also said “What would you do?”, and implied he’d do the same.

I don’t think it’s fair to blame Rush for this, he’s just calling it like he sees it. And it “Looks like” using the tactics of the left. If the charges are true, as Newt says, then there’s nothing wrong with bringing it up.

I support Newt, but this does make me very uncomfortable.

The really bad outcome was, Newt let this get to him, and he exploded with an almost Olympian wrath, painting himself as someone who was AGAINST venture capitalism. And I don’t think that in his heart, Newt is anything of the kind.

Actually, this is probably the general lines by which the Obama re-election committee meant to attack Romney in the general election, and Romney, bless his heart, has the time and resources to counter these accusations and charges before the Obama Chicago Machine can crank them up against him.

But will Mitt take this opportunity and marshall his arguments supporting his actions while at Bain Capital? Or will he just meekly allow the propaganda surge to stand, and be carried backwards in the flood of invective that will surely issue from the Obama regime, once the gloves are taken off?

The nagging fear is that Romney believes that simply being the nominee is enough to rally all the “Anybody but Obama” sentiment that seethes in this country, and will do the very minimum in support of his own election.

With so many failures and vulnerabilities, Obama should already be unelectable, and so immobilized he cannot serve effectively for the remainder of this term. But do not underestimate the determination and tenacity of cornered ‘Rats. If you don’t go for the kill, the vicious and cunning creatures will fight past you and end up inflicting serious damage in the process.

It's not a "dramatic simplification". It's forum shorthand.

I expect that most Freepers are already well up on what happened on Rush's show today. If they didn't hear it for themselves, they've already seen over a dozen reports about it.

We're fully aware of what Rush's main point was today. The problem is, the net effect of his rant is that it created more sympathy (which equals votes) for Mitt Romney. THAT is a problem, and I fault Rush for not communicating his displeasure better than he did.

I agree. I’m sick of watching Fox. I was on my rower the other day and just watching the picture without the sound. I was shocked at how often they displayed Romney’s name and picture ...it was completely repetitive, total subliminal projection. Try watching it w/o the sound and you’ll see what i mean.

They can CRAM IT.

Romney puts out a Super Pack of Lies on Newt and no one complains, but the minute Newt puts out a Super Pack of the Truth on Romney, Newt’s suddenly attacking Capitalism. Yes everybody, after working with Reagan and starting a Republican Revolution, Newt is against Capitalism. I don’t know what’s more insulting: The people who wanted to vote for Newt in Iowa but got scared off and bought off by Romney and Paul not to or some of these main stream conservatives suddenly doubting Newt’s conservative credentials. I’ve been with Newt since Day 1. Best candidate then - best candidate now by far. If you’re going to attack Newt, attack him on policy. Go through his 21st Century Contract with America and tell me what ideas are bad for America. Otherwise, stop trying to sway the lowest common denominator with things that have nothing to do with imporoving the future of this country. Do yourself a favor. Next time Newt is on C-Span, just put it on, leave it on, tell everyone in the room either to get out or be quiet and just listen to him. Learn something and think about what he’s saying. If you still disagree with his ideas, then you have a legitimate reason not to vote for him. But at least hear him out and not listen to the media spin against him. That’s all I ask.
