Rick Perry: Let’s Put Troops Back In Iraq ["I would send troops back into Iraq"]
TPM ^ | January 7, 2012 | Benjy Sarlin

Rick Perry established a new gold standard for hawkish foreign policy at Saturday night’s GOP debate in New Hampshire. Not only is he mad President Obama withdrew US forces, he wants to put them back on the ground there immediately.

“I would send troops back into Iraq,” Rick Perry told a New Hampshire audience at Saturday night’s GOP debate, warning that without yet another military operation in Iraq it would fall under the influence of neighboring Iran.

“I think it’s a huge error for us,” he said. “We’re going to see Iran in my opinion, move back in at literally the speed of light. They’re going to move back in. And all of the work we’ve done — every young man that has lost his life in that country will have been for nothing. Because we’ve got a president that does not understand what’s going on in that region.”

US forces were withdrawn at the request of the Iraqi government, who signed an agreement with the Bush administration in 2008 legally requiring them to leave by the end of this year. Perry insisted that Obama could have renegotiated the deal to keep troops there.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Governor Perry, we know you have differences with President Obama, but who’s got the better of this argument right here between Senator Santorum and Governor Huntsman?

PERRY: Well, I think that you have to -- I would send troops back into Iraq, because I will tell you...

STEPHANOPOULOS: Now?

PERRY: I -- I think we start talking with the Iraqi individuals there. The idea that we allow the Iranians to come back into Iraq and take over that country, with all of the treasure, both in blood and money, that we have spent in Iraq, because this president wants to kowtow to his liberal, leftist base and move out those men and women. He could have renegotiated that timeframe. [***the part that was left out***]

I think it is a huge error for us. We’re going to see Iran, in my opinion, move back in at literally the speed of light. They’re going to move back in, and all of the work that we’ve done, every young man that has lost his life in that country will have been for nothing because we’ve got a president that does not understand what’s going on in that region."

“Quagmire”. You’re repeating Dem talking points. It’s only a quagmire to people who don’t understand human nature, the middle east, and the necessity of winning a war.

Rick Perry isn’t wrong, you do not know what you are talking about. Perry was talking about negotiating with the Iraqis, working out a feasable plan based on analysis from our generals, which would not have moved us out of Iraq in the way Obama is doing, leaving a vacuum for the Iranians to rape and murder.

The Obama administration tried to allow a U.S. presence beyond the timetable of withdrawal agreed to under Bush but the Iraqis do not want us there. And they are a sovereign nation. Going back in would be an act of war.

This is why you support Ron Paul. You see our position of wanting to win a war, secure our victories, and handle things in a rational way based on the recommendations of our men on the ground, and then you extend this to mean that we want to commit genocide against all Muslims.

No one, not Perry, was arguing that we should reinvade Iraq. The exact words were that we need to negotiate with the Iraqis to allow for our troops to stay to insure stability in the region. Mass murder and rape is what awaits the Iraqis if we abandon them. All the lives and money spent would be for nothing. The Iraqis don’t want us there because our leader is pathetic and unreliable.

Since you seem to be uncertain about this issue and are in need of some clarification, I will give it to you. The reason why a certain level of US troops ought to have remained in Iraq is to secure the gains we paid for in treasure and blood. Getting rid of Saddam Hussein and dismantling his military will have all been for exactly nothing if we walk away and hand the place over to Iranian influence.

Make no mistake, that is exactly what will ensue as a direct result of Obama flubbing the negotiations for an extension of the status of forces agreement. That was an easily achievable diplomatic goal, and it is my opinion that it was INTENTIONALLY flubbed by the Obama administration to provide cover for what, stripped of spin, is simple surrender.

This is the modern example of what happened in China in 1949, and in Iran at the end of the Shah’s era; capitulation to our enemies. It always happens at the hands of Democrats. Why? Because they really don’t care in their hearts what happens to the United States - they care more for the success of our enemies.

Had a sensible foreign policy remained in place, this continued minimal troop presence would not have required much, certainly not much in comparison with the treasure and blood already spent and spilt.

Now, we will get to see something shameful and tragic, a blot on our good name.

Shame on you and all your ilk.

"we want to commit genocide against all Muslims."

Well I keep hearing that the Muslims hate us "because of who we are" or variations of the same theme. Well IF that is true and IF they are going to be coming after us, as I have been repeatedly told, then I say fine yall want a war with Islam I'm in but let's have a real war and let's do it right.

But first maybe we should back off a bit and see what happens? Cause for sure if we keep pushing Islam, Islam will be pushing back.

LOL!!!

Ask the Byzantines, the Hungarians, the Serbs, the Assyrians, and the Persians how that worked out for them. Jut as a start.

What a joke.

We accomplished our objectives and left on the date established by the Bush administration. Iraq gave the oil field development contracts to Russia, China, and France. We have no more business there. If we have business pending with Iran, we need to take that business up with Iran, not Iraq. I for one am unwilling to sacrifice another life, dollar, or weapon system on Iraq. To be honest, I really don’t care what happens in Iraq. we have bigger threats to deal with.
