Lawmakers in the nation's capital have floated a plan to require high school students to apply to college or trade school -- even if the students have no interest in attending.

The proposal is a bid to ensure students in the troubled Washington, D.C., school system at least have the know-how to navigate the admissions process.

~~SNIP~~

D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown, who introduced the bill, said the proposal would establish a "mandatory workshop" to teach teenagers how to apply for aid and admission.

Maybe they should teach them to read, write and understand basic math and science first.

Read, write and do math? You sound like some Bible-thumping, knuckle-dragging redneck.

(I’d never make it as a public school administrator.)

Our graduation rate in my former hometown is 44%. Please don’t ask about the demographics.

Hell, why not pass a law forcing them to take out a loan to pay for the college education.

That’s a whole lot easier than actually hiring teachers who will teach academics - just force kids to apply whether or not they are qualified and whether or not they want to attend. Democrats think conservatives are heartless, since we actually want even urban kids to be educated. They say they are the compassionate ones, because they want to find alternatives to actual learning.

This /will be nothing more than a pool for non-worthies to have protest time and money. Probably even a good set up for more street learning.

What better way to perpetuate big government education, along with its unions and cushy administrator jobs and benefits. Teach the kids about all the freebies they can get at others’ expense. These educrats couldn’t make it in the real world.

If teens need to be trained about how to apply for aid and admission, they are NOT yet ready for further education.

Why bother with persuasion when you can coerce?

And, I suppose, there will then be a new government program to pay for the preparation and processing of these applications?

Is this the beginnings of going beyond zer0care, to force Americans into commerce that they do not want?

“Read, write and do math? You sound like some Bible-thumping, knuckle-dragging redneck.”

Well, maybe you are right. That is extreme. Perhaps they could work in a just a little math, science, reading and writing between their multiculturalism, global warming, and other more important classes.

When I was in college, we were required to take a minority studies course: Black, Hispanic, or Native American. Most opted for the Hispanic studies course since you got an A.B by simply showing up and listening to the professor preach race hatred (A is you were a minority and B otherwise). I took the Black studies course (same grading approach). I was so in his face he called me outside and offered me an A not to show up for the rest of the quarter.

A happily accepted the offer.

Ugh. What is your problem? Don't you know that the more time they spend on reading, writing, math and science, the less time they will be able to devote to their real passion, Bitterness Studies.

Just another small way in which the left is successfully turning our culture into something resembling Mao’s China during the cultural revolution. A bill that would obligate someone WHO IS A LEGAL ADULT to attend college or trade school? Really?

Of course, they now obligate me to buy health insurance. Why not obligate me to attend college against my will?
