Ayalon: Israel Will Hit Back on Cyber Attacks

Hackers who attempt to attack Israel in cyberspace will be met with a "forceful response," warned Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon on Saturday -- one comparable to the response meted out to terrorists.

Speaking at a cultural forum at a community center in Be'er Sheva, Ayalon said Israel views incidents such as the attack in which a Saudi hacker exposed the credit card numbers and information of thousands of Israelis at least twice last week as "acts of terror." An Israeli blogger claimed Friday that he was able to figure out the identity of the hacker, who claimed he was based in Saudi Arabia.

According to a Channel 10 News report, blogger Amir Fedida said he believes the hacker, identified in the report as Omar Habib, is based in Mexico, although a citizen of the United Arab Emirates.

Israel will "retaliate forcefully," Ayalon said. ....

On the US side of things, we talk about cyber warfare, and we emphasize how important it is, but we don’t really spend much on it, and with the coming budget cuts, we will probably spend a lot less. We are vulnerable.

IDF Wet Missions would certainly wake up a few of these nerds who collect and disperse thousands innocent owners of bank accounts for ill-conceived wrongs. Would be cool with me if their targeted attacks scared the crap out of Anonymous.

Or maybe the Hacker will wake up dead. Israelis aren't as stupid as you suggest. Different attacks require different responses. Maybe his ISP will disappear. Or maybe the country he is from will disappear. Let's wait and see.

If that occurs, then we will not be dealing with hackers the same way we do with terrorists. We just freed 1,000 of the latter in exchange for Gilad Shalit. We’ve been negotiating with terrorists for 18 years just so we can give them some land we’d dearly miss, and help them create a state dedicated to our destruction. If we deal with hackers the same way, we might as well start sending smoke signals instead of using the Internet for communication.
