“. . . conservatives will coelesce around Santorum or Gingrich and have a better chance of defeating Romney.”
Wrong wrong wrong. Focus please. We need to defeat Obama.
OK the fat lady (whoever she is ) has sang for Bachmann.
The next important question is this -— to whom will her supporters flock to? And who will she support?
For McCain to endorse Romney OVER his fellow Senator, Santorum, says a lot about him.
You know the tight Senate club, and once you’re in it, you’re in it for life, through thick and thin...among your fellows, at least.
McCain is either trying to back the one he thinks will ultimately win, or he nurses one huge grudge against Santorum.
Or some of both.
She’s doing the right thing. Conservatives need to coalesce around someone and last night showed it won’t be her, and sadly for me, it won’t be Rick Perry.
It will be interesting to see how SC goes this year withour a stalking horse. If Mitt gets his 25% and Paul gets his 15%, that means either Santorum or Gingrich gets at least 30% and Mitt can’t win (also assuming Huntsman is irrelevant if still in the race).
The problem is money. She has none. No money, no campaign,k regardless of anything else.
Good.
Lets widdle this circus down to serious contenders.
I have to agree with Sabato on that one. I thought the same myself when I saw the thread headline. It’s not just the fact of many Republicans not liking McCain, he’s the last GOP presidential loser. That’s not who I’d want an endorsement from...
The Santorum ‘surge’ is comparable to the other candidates’ waves. Proof that the electorate wants bits and pieces of the different characters;
Newt’s intellect and knowledge of how DC (doesn’t) work.
Michelles fiesty fire in the belly.
Santorum’s nice family & Mr. Rogers’ appearance.
Paul’s seniority;(age ain’t necessarily wisdom)
Huntsman’s mature grasp of Foreign policy.
Perry’s earthy self and military background.
Mitt’s money.
Hard to figure why Santorum is now surging - he did so poorly in the debates - so his appeal must be at the ‘meet & greet’ retail level.
Didn’t Santorum in 2008 speak out forcefully against a McPain nomination? I may be wrong on that. If so, that would be greater motivation for McPain to back Romney. However, I think McPain’s backing will hurt Romney. Who outside of AZ has much respect for McPain?
I am positive McCain’s nomination will hurt Romney, not help.
>>The next important question is this - to whom will her supporters flock to? And who will she support?<<
Santorum seems the obvious place for her backers to go. But it wouldn’t surprise me to see her endorse Romney — which her followers won’t follow AND will probably permanently end any future bids.
I think she'll wait until the Gingrich vs. Santorum battle goes, then endorse the winner over Romney.
She can't possibly endorse Romney, if she hopes to have a base to buy her books and pay to hear her speak.
When McCain agreed to this NH eve endorsement, Santorum wasn’t on the radar. It has nothing to do with Rick and everything to do with the establishment.
Pray for America
I thought Santorum did fine in the debates thus far; he was shunned by commentators, but he made NO gaffes to my knowledge. He is articulate and determined. Now he needs ANOTHER miracle.
Perry should be in and mitt out. Mitt did squat for America - it’s all about him and how he can back$tab and deceive others.
“Hard to figure why Santorum is now surging - he did so poorly in the debates - so his appeal must be at the meet & greet retail level.”
I don’t think it’s hard. He’s the last anti-Romney left that hasn’t been (figuratively) beaten to a pulp by the media or the other candidates.
But, once he rises to the top, HE’LL be relentlessly attacked TOO, until the only “clear and safe” candidate standing is... surprise! Mitt Romney.
THEN, once Romney is our candidate, the left will try and entice Paul to go third party and “split” our vote. If that doesn’t work, they’ll pull whatever it is they have on Romney out of the drawer and use it, leaving a clear path for the re-election of the worst President in the history of the United States.
