Americans buy record numbers of guns for Christmas
Americans bought record numbers of guns last month amid an apparent surge in popularity for weapons as Christmas presents.

According to the FBI, over 1.5 million background checks on customers were requested by gun dealers to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System in December. Nearly 500,000 of those were in the six days before Christmas.
It was the highest number ever in a single month, surpassing the previous record set in November.
On Dec 23 alone there were 102,222 background checks, making it the second busiest single day for buying guns in history.
The actual number of guns bought may have been even higher if individual customers took home more than one each.
Explanations for America's surge in gun buying include that it is a response to the stalled economy with people fearing crime waves. Another theory is that buyers are rushing to gun shops because they believe tighter firearms laws will be introduced in the future.

Woot!
na na na na na na
I am willing to bet that there are a large number of “independents” and yes, even liberals doing the buying...
And they aren’t likely to honor the forthcoming edicts of the current admin regarding gun control. In fact, they will likely get real annoyed when Obama decides to try further limiting their suddenly discovered 2nd Amendment rights.
Ironic.
And these numbers do no reflect private sales or CHL holders.
I see it as "Americans using their 2nd amendment rights given to them by the grace of God and spitting in the face of tyranny". : )
Disarming the citizenry might not be quite as easy as the half dark overlord may happen to think.
This pleases me.
The poor folks have to wait till their earned income credit comes in with their taxes to buy.
good news BUMP
It's been a constantly increasing slant on the graph since 0bama has run for POTUS and just look at the mayhem and lawlessness that we have experienced since then! /s
Makes me proud.
The average American sees the shit hitting the fan and doesn’t want to face the near future unarmed. That’s the legacy of the Kenyan.
LOL!
I see it as "partially eclipsed wannabe". ~snort

Behind every blade of grass, indeed.
I wonder how much of an effect that kids who have grown up playing computer games like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, or even games like Fallout 3 are having on gun purchases. I think gaming is probably having a bigger impact than most people realize.
I think there’s a lot of truth to that. Again, to quote Alanis Morrisette...Isn’t it ironic? ;)
There are definitely a ton of kids/younger Americans that are sheep...but there is a good number of them that, while perhaps not 1950s type right wing Leave it to Beavers, ARE far more like ‘us’ than the generation the libs wanted.
Yep.
That's why the nefarians want TSA roving the highways with mobile backscatter x-ray machines.
I don’t think it’s just gaming, I think that it’s an overall favorable approach to guns in media in general. I’ve been a gun enthusiast ever since basic training, but my wife didn’t really care about them at all...at first. Then, we started watching “Top Shot” on History, then “Sons of Guns” as well.
She enjoyed watching them, which made it easier for me to get her to the range to actually shoot. She had never fired a firearm before she went to basic training, and never fired one afterwards and punched out after her first enlistment was up.
But once she started shooting at the range with me, she LOVED it. Every new episode of one of those shows would come out, and she’d want to shoot whatever they did. Something interestingly ironic about watching a Korean girl fire an AK-47 made me giggle on the inside.
Long story short, she became one of those “first time gun owners” this Christmas. Santa brought her a Smith and Wesson 686 plus .357 revolver that she had enjoyed shooting the last couple of range trips.
What does the Giffords shooting have to do with this topic?
