"The illegals I met last night."
Self | 1/1/2012 | Bern Pearson

Posted on 01/01/2012 8:10:22 AM PST by Gen.Blather

I met some illegal Mexicans last night at a party. Several years ago I stayed with a couple of wonderful Mexican families in the Baja below California. These were well-off people. The homes, on average were beautifully tiled and some of them had mahogany inlaid walls, bookshelves and cabinetry that would cost a hundred-thousand dollars here. So, I’m guessing if they aren’t rich they’re very comfortable. The elderly not as well-off grandfather, while living in Mexico was receiving Social Security from the United States and owned a rent-free apartment in California which he used as his address to receive several forms of assistance checks from Californian agencies. He visited the apartment once a week to re-arrange things and make it looked lived in. He had a car, a Toyota Corolla that looked quite nice and had working air-conditioning. I gathered it was supplied as some form of assistance and he generally left it in California at the apartment. The apartment was about 1100 square feet and very livable. The grandfather told me most of entire complex, easily a 1000 units, were like him, on Californian assistance, but actually living in Mexico.

At the party were a couple of teenage boys from this family. Very nice kids. I’d be proud to have them as my own; diligent, hard working, trouble-free and much more adult than you’d expect from that age. They told me that they’d decided to go to high school in California instead of Mexico. They said that the (California) government gave them an apartment and they travel back to Mexico on the weekends. (I don’t know if they’re staying alone or if a family member is staying with them, but if I had to guess, they came alone.)

When I posted information on this family last time, Freepers angrily asked why I hadn’t reported them. Firstly, I was a well-treated guest. Secondly, this must be obvious to the casual observer. Even if I knew who to report it to in California, which I don’t, it is obvious that this is how it’s done. These people are only taking advantage of “benefits” put there for them. Not to avail themselves of these benefits would be like deciding not to take candy freely offered to you.

No matter where you go, if you ask for a cheese sandwich and a bottle of beer (open it yourself) you are pretty safe.

That's true too. We are being taken out to dinner one night, probably a steak house, or Japanese.

Have you seen the new movie "Contagion?"

Do you have an actual wood stove, or just a fireplace?

Our house is 1200sf, and we use a proper wood stove downstairs, and what we call a ‘wood insert’ upstairs. (Like a wood stove built into an old fireplace.)

Even then, it can be hard to manage the heat sometimes.

If “everybody’s different” then two of them have to be the same. It’s the only way to be different.

Not if you are a snowflake.

I’ve heard that rumor. It seems difficult to substantiate.

Hmmm. Other than identical twins, are any of the 6 Billion humans currently alive identical? Are identical twins even identical?

Nah, he’d have a pulse with a mere pacemaker.

He’s turbocharged!

"Are identical twins even identical?"

They have different fingerprints, iris patterns, and retina patterns. But their DNA is the same.

Despite many accounts of odd coincidences regarding shared thoughts, there's no real evidence that is possible.

According to me, we'll have to do that the hard way, via electronic interfacing. Anybody think we're not heading in that direction?

I’d trust the beer but not the cheese sandwich.

ALWAYS trust the beer! It was what my dad lived on the last six weeks of his life. It is nourishing!

Where in TX are you?

Sigh. On March 2, 1836 (Texans should recognize that date) one o' my great-great grandfathers was already. With his father. And his grandfather. And there's a (sort of informally-formally defunct) town what bears my family surname there. I am a genetic Texan. But I left Austin some years ago with the intent of returning to Texas. (Yes. I know. Leave Texas? What folly.) I have not yet returned.

I fly the Texas flag or the Gonzales Banner of 1835 or the Goliad Flag or similar flags on the appropriate holidays.

And I wear manly footwear (tip o' the hat to Gary P. Nunn).

Now, if they only made Canadian Texans.

I do like your hot dogs (from Toronto) and your roast beef sandwiches (the ferry from Seattle to Vancouver). And your Loonies. I'm a fan of any country issuing coinage bearing an image of aquatic fowl known for its haunting laugh. And thank you for your comedians. Please take Michael J. Foxx back and send us a full-sized one.

If “everybody’s different” then two of them have to be the same.

I volunteer to be the same as Scoutmaster. As I was just saying to myself the other day:

"Self" (we have known each other for some time and I no longer feel the need to refer to me as Mr. Self), I said, "what are we going to do about us?"

"I don't know. What do I think?"

"I asked me first."

"I know, but I don't really care, so I'd like to know what I think. I've always respected my opinion."

"I like the way I think. I think we could go places together."

"We make a great team, I and I."

I would share the rest of the conversation with you, but some of it was personal.

I love that answer! Could we maybe have a Canaxas? Or a Tecanad?

We have two “certified” wood stoves, but the wood we have to burn is 5 years old and has relatively few BTUs left in it. It produces prodigious quantities of ash but very little heat. What is more, I will not leave the house once a fire is lit. Too many homes have burnt down that way. Our home is two stories. In my current condition it is difficult to schlepp firewood up two flights of stairs from outside around the corner.

Would I think my conversation with me was personal? I think The Undead Thread has taken all the personality out of the personal aspects of being in a personal relationship with persons who are personally engaged with persons who think that there is an end to those who have a personality that is personally personified. IMHO.
