"The illegals I met last night."
Self | 1/1/2012 | Bern Pearson

Posted on 01/01/2012 8:10:22 AM PST by Gen.Blather

I met some illegal Mexicans last night at a party. Several years ago I stayed with a couple of wonderful Mexican families in the Baja below California. These were well-off people. The homes, on average were beautifully tiled and some of them had mahogany inlaid walls, bookshelves and cabinetry that would cost a hundred-thousand dollars here. So, I’m guessing if they aren’t rich they’re very comfortable. The elderly not as well-off grandfather, while living in Mexico was receiving Social Security from the United States and owned a rent-free apartment in California which he used as his address to receive several forms of assistance checks from Californian agencies. He visited the apartment once a week to re-arrange things and make it looked lived in. He had a car, a Toyota Corolla that looked quite nice and had working air-conditioning. I gathered it was supplied as some form of assistance and he generally left it in California at the apartment. The apartment was about 1100 square feet and very livable. The grandfather told me most of entire complex, easily a 1000 units, were like him, on Californian assistance, but actually living in Mexico.

At the party were a couple of teenage boys from this family. Very nice kids. I’d be proud to have them as my own; diligent, hard working, trouble-free and much more adult than you’d expect from that age. They told me that they’d decided to go to high school in California instead of Mexico. They said that the (California) government gave them an apartment and they travel back to Mexico on the weekends. (I don’t know if they’re staying alone or if a family member is staying with them, but if I had to guess, they came alone.)

When I posted information on this family last time, Freepers angrily asked why I hadn’t reported them. Firstly, I was a well-treated guest. Secondly, this must be obvious to the casual observer. Even if I knew who to report it to in California, which I don’t, it is obvious that this is how it’s done. These people are only taking advantage of “benefits” put there for them. Not to avail themselves of these benefits would be like deciding not to take candy freely offered to you.

Of course it’s unexpected.

If it were a trap, the extra would be splatted by now.

Yet another bit of oddness I did.
The redshirt just had that look of horrified realization about him.

Kathleen is doing great. Lots of eating and digesting! I’ll go drag Tom out of his room to upload my pictures.

How are things in Seattle? Anoreth was in Alameda the past week on a legal matter, and then said they were going to be Occupied by the Marxist loons yesterday.

New beds are being moved in for some byos. Bill will have to clean up his mess to make room for Tom in his room.

It's the TC House Bedroom Shuffle. I can hear the beat from here. Let's dance!

Cha-cha-cha! Bill probably has an entire Tom-worth of papers and guitar magazines on the floor, and when you consider the size of a Tom, that’s a lot to clean up.

Sorry, can’t dance—almost threw my back out doing a Juliann Hough exercise DVD. I’d be honored to play the triangle, though.

Raining like mad. But at least it’s melting the ice from the “where did that come from?!” ice storm that we had on Thursday.

It’s pretty funny when the network weather people can’t make it in to the studio because their cars are frozen over with ice they didn’t see coming.

Trees down everywhere, still alot of people without power.

LOL!
I cleaned up a Rush-worth of magazines tonight while in search of an old family picture.

Today I met a relative by pure chance. My Grandfather was the brother of his Great-Grandfather. He still lives in the same area that was settled by my Great-Grandfather. He gave me the address for the house where my Grandfather was born.

Face, you do have ant genealogy advice?

I thought about posting something clever and enormously witty - a bon mot to make you literally laugh, something with an obscure popular culture reference from another decade coupled with a passing connection to the time-space continuum or an Ancient Celtic text - but something that would make you pause and realize there was a second level of pungent social commentary or a lasting life lesson, coupled with dry wit and another bit of wry humor dependent on recognizing a play on words that contrasts an unpublished Shakespearean sonnet with one of Tax-chick's 1999 posts - then making you stop and peel the metaphorical mental onion further to see that I actually meant something else, something so stunningly candent that you audibly cry "aha!"

But then I realized we're almost at the 1,600 mark and we'll be on another page and people will only see the post for a few more minutes.

Well, that and the fact that I can't even think of a knock-knock joke at the moment.

Face, you do have any genealogy advice?

Choose very wealthy, very healthy ancestors who have small families and don't believe in this giving to charity stuff. And they should own a lot of real estate, preferably in places like Texas. That's another important thing when selecting your ancestors.

Actually, talk to the oldest relatives you can find, and their living siblings and cousins, and pump them for information on the names of their uncles and aunts, and maiden names of their grandmothers and where they came from and when. I started in the 1980's, and that information was a Godsend when it came time to piece together Census and other records - or even knowing when to move to other states in a Census.

And never, ever, ever believe anybody else's research unless you've seen the underlying documents.

You don’t need to work that hard.

"It's worth a try."

Jeff Dunham: "So, Achmed, what kind of a terrorist are you?"

Achmed: "A terrifying terrorist." Achmed drops his jaw and raises his eyebrows. "Ah hah!"

Achmed: "Are you terrified?"

Jeff Dunham: "Not really, no."

Achmed drops his jaw again, and raises his eyebrows more. "Ah Hah!!!" ... "How about now?"

Jeff Dunham: "Not really. No."

Achmed: "Gosh darn it!"
