I met some illegal Mexicans last night at a party. Several years ago I stayed with a couple of wonderful Mexican families in the Baja below California. These were well-off people. The homes, on average were beautifully tiled and some of them had mahogany inlaid walls, bookshelves and cabinetry that would cost a hundred-thousand dollars here. So, Im guessing if they arent rich theyre very comfortable. The elderly not as well-off grandfather, while living in Mexico was receiving Social Security from the United States and owned a rent-free apartment in California which he used as his address to receive several forms of assistance checks from Californian agencies. He visited the apartment once a week to re-arrange things and make it looked lived in. He had a car, a Toyota Corolla that looked quite nice and had working air-conditioning. I gathered it was supplied as some form of assistance and he generally left it in California at the apartment. The apartment was about 1100 square feet and very livable. The grandfather told me most of entire complex, easily a 1000 units, were like him, on Californian assistance, but actually living in Mexico.
At the party were a couple of teenage boys from this family. Very nice kids. Id be proud to have them as my own; diligent, hard working, trouble-free and much more adult than youd expect from that age. They told me that theyd decided to go to high school in California instead of Mexico. They said that the (California) government gave them an apartment and they travel back to Mexico on the weekends. (I dont know if theyre staying alone or if a family member is staying with them, but if I had to guess, they came alone.)
When I posted information on this family last time, Freepers angrily asked why I hadnt reported them. Firstly, I was a well-treated guest. Secondly, this must be obvious to the casual observer. Even if I knew who to report it to in California, which I dont, it is obvious that this is how its done. These people are only taking advantage of benefits put there for them. Not to avail themselves of these benefits would be like deciding not to take candy freely offered to you.
Howdy! Wow no snow to speak of for 2 days!!!!!!
Have a nice safe day ya all!!
Give Stig a howdy for me Face!
Afternoon!
Bombed out here, rain, cold, and the snow will turn to slodgy ice later.
Rain here, snow on the mountains, cold wind, maybe a high of 50. *shudder*
The Stig is taking advantage of the dismal weather and is sleeping...LOL!
I have a standing policy that the designation “morning” shall not be made, nor shall advancement of the calendar day be permitted, until more than 4 consecutive hours of sleep shall have intervened.
Ah. But Daylight belies your Policy.
Besides: Babies don’t know from “policy.”
Hi TC!
Welcome home!
Hi The Rest of you UTer’s, I missed ya’ll too.
We just got home from 5 days in Dallas. Well, 3 days in Dallas, and 2 days in airports. At least it was in the mid 70’s for 2 of the 3 days, and even though we didn’t get outside very much, it was a nice break from the cold.
It’s good to see everyone this rain drizzly afternoon.
It’s been an odd day here.
I have to head back in to work tonight, bossman and I swapped shifts.
Golly, Sis!
Tejas is kinda good this time of year, though I would have to vote for the Panhandle.
Still, I’m glad you get to see SOME of the US of A!
I’m still waiting for you to visit The Meadows (Las Vegas) so we can meet up for lunch...if nothing else...food is good here!
Yep. We’ve been under a freezing rain warning all day.
The night before our flight to Dallas, we had freezing rain.
The power went out. We woke up a half an hour late (no alarm), and got ready with no water avaliable, in the dark. That was fun./sarc
Texas and Arkansas FReepers had a line of tornado producing gunk race through yesterday.
We may make it one day Hun. We’d have a good time together!
That must have been caused by the south winds. The tail wind shaved 30 mins. off our flight to Toronto.
I’m willing to accept more the four non-consecutive hours, if followed by coffee.
Good coffee is also (in addition to beer) proof that God wants us to be happy.
Congratulations on a new baby sister, Anoreth. :-)
Hi, back for Baby and UTer check. Day was weird. The utilities people shut the water off while they were replacing a pipe. One detail: they didn’t notify anybody because, heck, it was only gonna be for a few hours lol! (We are at the very end of the water pipe—not within the city limits—I guess we’re invisible to the powers that be.)
Just reestablished econtact with a great coworker (’80’s and 90’s.) She also said, “Raising kids and doing what we did? How did we do it?”
God Bless the youth of America!
I’m so glad to hear your “no snow” report! We had wind advisories and thunderstorms last night, but today was clear. Those high winds scare us here.
“the designation morning shall not be made, nor shall advancement of the calendar day be permitted, until more than 4 consecutive hours of sleep shall have intervened.”
That sounds like a very good policy. Let me review my, “How a bill becomes a law,” flyer from high school to figure out how to enact it. (Since my high school days back to the decline of the Roman empire, it might be awhile until I get back to y’all.) All informed persons are invited to post input so that we can finish this task promptly.”
You have to be at least as powerful as a Medieval Pope to be able to juggle calendar days.
Back to wish y’all sweet dreams! G’night....
Yes, if your flight hedged eastward of the storm front, there was a wind from the north as the low pressure system was a large “spiral galaxy” s shape with the lower curve facing east and the upper curve west.
So as the lower curve rushed northward through Texas and Arkansas, the upper curve was rushing southward.
It was interesting to watch on the radar.
At least it petered out before it got here.
