Who is the real Kim Jong-un? Diplomats fret over North Korea's portly new leader and party officials fear a purge

North Korea's new leader, Kim Jong-un, is a frightening unknown quantity in charge of a dangerously militarised state. Even his top officials fear a savage purge of their ranks.

By Malcolm Moore, Shanghai

Officially aged 29, but probably only 26 or 27, Kim Jong-un is the youngest man in history with the power to launch a nuclear weapon.

But the man who appears to have smoothly risen to become North Korea's "Supreme Military Commander", the title formally bestowed on him on Friday and confirmed by the ruling politburo yesterday, is a worrying blank to most of the outside world.

At the same time, North Korea's neighbours fear what else Kim Jong-un may do to assert his grip. Diplomats suspect he will engineer some kind of military incident, most likely with neighbouring South Korea, to demonstrate his ruthlessness and strength.

A US Congressional staff member told The Sunday Telegraph that intelligence analysts have speculated, in closed-door briefings, that the younger Kim may suffer from a personality disorder. He is thought to have a "violent streak".

Russian sources also confirmed that Kim Jong-un had undergone a drastic change since being picked as his father's successor, from a quiet and shy child into a tough, rude and even violent man. During one reception in his country home last year, he is said to have humiliated and kicked his waiters while drunk.

He is said already to show symptoms of diabetes and heart disease, suggesting that he may share some of his father's ill health.

from a quiet and shy child into a tough, rude and even violent man.

Fujimoto, Kim Jong-il's one-time personal chef, says that Jung-un was an tough and aggressive kid and it is what made Kim Jong-il favor him. Maybe his personality is fully coming out now that he grew up.

I can see that he has a violent streak. The guy would rather go down in flames than introduce gradual reform.

Over aggressive in basketball.

A nerd with chicks.

Picked on a bit.

Looked down and was silent when they had government studies in school about "Democracy" over there in Switzerland.

Tortured animals as a kid.

Was in on the shelling of the Yongpyongdo Island last year and probably on the Cheonan sinking, and was giving hands on experience in extracting an extortion from the US (a high level visit by Bil l Clinton a complete US humiliation), by holding and negotiating the fates of those two Al Gore TV lib chicks that foolishly went into North Korea year before last.

This guy Kim Jong Il (Pugsley) is BAD ASS NEWS. He will start signing the death orders before the plum blossoms of Spring, IMHO.

I am really concerned about North Korea’s appointment of the “dear leader”, Kim Jung Ill’s youngest son to be the new leader of North Korea — a nuclear power!

After all, Kim Jung Un (pronounced Kim’s young-un?) had NO military experience whatsoever before daddy made him a four-star general in the military. This is a snot-nose twerp who has never accomplished anything in his life that that would even come close to military leadership: he hasn’t even so much as led a cub scout troop, let alone coached a sports team or commanded a military platoon. So, setting that aside, next they make him the “beloved leader” of the country. Terrific!!!

OH CRAP !!! I’m sorry. I just remembered that we did the same thing here, We took a community organizer who has never worn a uniform and made him Commander-in-Chief; a guy who has never led anything more than an ACORN demonstration and made him the leader of this country. Never mind.

Oh, well isn’t that comforting. This is not going to end well. When the Kim regime falls, don’t look for a peaceful collapse like we saw with European communism in 89’.

The difference is ...

we can probably *get* Kim Jong Un's school records and birth certificate; and we know where he was born and who both his parents are.

No sarcasm.

Cheers!

As it is wisely observed, there is no honor among thieves.

Nothing can describe this so-called "sham" of the DPRK better than a classic gangster organizational operation. In fact, it is fundamentally an illegitimate regime and should not even be recognized as a nation state, but something akin to a terrorist organization or Mexican drug cartel. Despite them all applauding and smiling at Party or On the Spot Guidance events, each one wants POWER and the good news is they will dispatch agents to shoot or poison anyone who gets in their way, Regular or Alternate co-member of the Politburo or not, even the Presidium of the Politburo of the 조선로동당 or not. It seems now is the time to develop even deeper the factions to oppose Kim Jong un and for situations to be developed to destabilize his regime and remove the boy who essentially carries the North Korean version of "the football".

This current condition with Kim Jong Un at the helm, is clearly unsustainable. A post-Kim Jong Un regime, which can be manipulated into some greater level of compliance with the West, should be thought through and those who can make it happen, be approach. There may not be these changes six to nine months down the line. I am sure John Bolton and some other strategists in the field of fomenting "regime change" have some scenarios they could put forward.

You're right, probably more appropriate in this case. I used to love his work in National Lampoon. Had one of his posters on my wall in college.
