Iran claimed to have taken surveillance footage of a US aircraft carrier near the Strait of Hormuz as both countries raised the stakes in their standoff over the key oil route.

The commander of Iran's navy said the reconnaissance mission was proof that his fleet had "control over the moves by foreign forces" but it was unclear what intelligence could be derived from the grainy video, which was played triumphantly on state television.

The US pissed away stability in the Middle East in late 1978.

Bravado about the US Fleet invulnerability, its ability to strike, and protect itself should harken back to 2007.

An ACC battle group is now nearing a trillion dollar investment meant for waging warfare from afar, and doing battle with conventionally-armed combat techniques. The last 10 years of Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere have shown us that classic warfare isn't operative any more. Swarms, UAVs, and other kill vehicles are in vogue and damned difficult to defend against.
Open waters, far, far away is where they should be with 24/7 air patrols armed with the nastiest FABs, Clusters, and wide area disperal weapons imaginable are called for.
If we lose a Kitty Hawk because of this, we cannot replace it unless the Chinese will loan us the money. If anyone here thinks the Chinese aren't helping Iran, go back and see who's been looking at the Sentinel.

TV hype as usual. We let them sea and air patrol in their own waters.

If we lose a Kitty Hawk because of this
Actually, we already lost the Kitty Hawk (and all the Kitty Hawks, for that matter).
But it was due to old age. ;-)

We lost our military sometime shortly after WWII. Since then the US military policy is simply show up with gear and allow the enemy to kill our troops, then pay the locals trillions to rebuild. Rarely we get lucky and take out a leader, but mostly we deliver million dollar pizzas to tribes of ungrateful reprobates.Wow! That anti-military screed reads like it came straight from RonPaul.com, Theophilus! What is your major malfunction, numbnuts!? ZOT!

"A CVN would NOT be running flight ops while transiting this narrow channel."I really have no idea other than my own flightdeck experience, as dated as it is. Seems there can be only two possibilities. Either they launched prior to entry and recovered on the other side, or launched and the squadrons landed at a nearby base until she passed the small channel. Either way, you're quite right, along with the normal escort, there's plenty of air-cover available.

Our military is utterly corrupt by political high ranking brass, and our troops have increasingly become drugged up criminal perverts who make sex toys out of livestock.Aw, if there was one thread I'd like to have been on to reply before the poster was gone, this is the one.
You, scumbag, have no idea. The men and women you speak of put their lives on the line every day so you can be an idiot, not just in your mind but in front of the entire world when you open your mouth. You are a worthless drag, a blot on society. You are a leach, sucking the blood out of decent Americans so you can live your worthless, lowlife existence. You pollute the air with your bilge. Are you beginning to get my drift?
OK, I've gotten a little of that off my chest but it doesn't begin to say what I think of you. So, without further ado, I'll get to the fun...

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried.
What a disgraceful insult to the very people who make sacrifices to protect your right to spew garbage like this.
