War scares are running high in Great Britain, while the British Foreign Ministry is trying to cool down tensions with Argentina. At the same time Britain is attempting to demonstrate that it has no intention of abandoning the Falkland Islands claimed by Argentina.
Prime Minister David Cameron, in his broadcast on Saturday, pledged to the Falklanders We will always maintain our commitment to you on any question of sovereignty Your right to self-determination is the cornerstone of our policy. We will never negotiate on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands unless you, the Falkland Islanders, so wish. No democracy could ever do otherwise.

When the japs bombed Pearl Harbor Hawaii wasn’t a state. With a war in Europe there was so much else to worry about.

Iran is going nuclear. The whole Middle East is on the verge of multiple wars, both civil and across borders. And in the middle of all that, the UK wants to go beat up Argentina over some dinky islands?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are completely ignorant if you are suggesting the UK should hand over the islands.
With only 4 Eurofighters on the island let's hope they get lots of notice of an attack.
Also at this time the UK has disbanded all of it's Harrier squadrons and has no aircraft carriers.
I doubt the big one is necessary. Sink every ship in the area and that will be enough.
If Argentina was half as smart as Mexico they would have
invaded the Falklands with illegal aliens. Let their culture
rot the host like they did in California. Eventually they
would be begging Argentina to take the Falklands off their
hands like we may soon be doing with California.
The Brit fleet may be down, but I bet there is a sub off of Argentina’s shore loaded with Torps and cruise missiles. Also, the Brit’s are a Nuclear nation if they want to go to that level.
The RN does maintain a guided missile destroyer in the area and the MOD maintains Rapid Reaction Force just for the Falklands.
Now if he would only take Britain’s sovereignty back from the unelected undemocratic EU.
“The United States has more international right to take back our former colony of Cuba, than Argentina has to invade and seize the independent Falkland Islands.”
We have more of a claim to the Falklands than we have to Cuba...
In the 1840’s we sent a flotilla of ships down to Argentina to halt acts of piracy waged on US ships which would sail from the east coast and head round the cape through the Drake passage going to California.
The action was initiated because pleas to stop this were being ignored by the then Viceroy of Argentina. Pirates based in Puerto Soledad (todays Port Stanley) on the Malvinas (Falkland)Islands. The flotilla sailed to Puerto Soledad. Marines and sailors were disembarked, captured the pirates and evacuated the town and dumped everybody off in Argentina. Then burned the abandoned town to the ground .
Through that action the US had the opportunity to claim the islands but for some reason chose not to do so. After that the islands lay abandoned for some time when the Brits came who originally had a whaleing station there came back and claimed it.
YOU LOT have more of a claim to the islands than the Argentines.
He might get the USN involved, as a blocking force to deter any effort by the UK to support the forces already present in the Falklands...
I also suspect they are right and Britain will toss in the towel. We will see.
No, they will never do that. The Brits get their back up over such matters. The Winston Churchill in them comes out. They will send Prince Harry and Prince William in their helicopters over to the Falklands to beat the crap out of Argentina, so they better watch out. Those two Princes are tough, lol!
agree
The brits aren’t quite europeanized yet. They still have pride, a sense of freedom, and some nationalism left. Somewhat.
They already went to war over it once. Is there any way to keep the islands free without having yet another war? When one keeps having the same wars every twenty years or thirty years, something is wrong.
Same holds true with Israel invading Lebanon twice, the US fighting Iraq twice, and the whole world fighting Germany twice. Wars are meant to resolve an issue vital enough to kill and die over, so it were infinitely better if they were resolved absolutely and finally the first time around.
Just like in Monty Python. “It’s only a flesh wound.” It’s just plain annoying. Argentina should just lie down and stop already.
“Wars are meant to resolve an issue vital enough to kill and die over, so it were infinitely better if they were resolved absolutely and finally the first time around.”
That’s assuming the belligerents are not attempting to fight a cheap, limited war. In Britain’s case, its ability to wage war has diminished considerably since 1945, or 1982 for that matter. Weakness only invites attack.....
“He that desires peace must prepare for war” is a double entendre. Being prepared for war is the only way to assure peace, and if you wish peace through abandoning the ability to make war, in the end you will need to fight a war.
