BREAKING: Perry disqualified from Va. primary ballot

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry failed to submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the Virginia primary ballot, state GOP officials said Friday evening.

Perry’s campaign told state election officials it had submitted 11,911 signatures, but a Virginia Republican familiar with the situation said that the Texas governor did not submit the required 10,000.

Earlier Friday, the Republican Party of Virginia certified former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.) to appear in the March ballot.

Four candidates — Romney, Perry, Paul and former House speaker Newt Gingrich — turned in thousands of signatures by the deadline. State party officials are spending the day certifying the signataries.

They have not examined Gingrich’s signatures yet, but expected to do so by late Friday night.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. to collect 10,000 signatures from across the state, including 400 from each congressional district.

Republican presidential candidates Michele Bachmann, Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum did not submit signatures, according to state GOP officials

We will see what shakes out, but it is apparent that they have disqualified him though the reasons remain unclear.

He could have been sabotaged by an organized effort to sign phony names.

My thought exactly. And work is likewise progressing in other states where he's trying to get on the ballot. How to tell the good volunteers from the bad?

And it’s not looking good for Newt.

And Newt had a smaller number supposedly turned in than did Perry. But then Newt may have been more deligent in making sure the numbers were accurate and valid.

Yep if there is just a two man race, Romney vs Paul that will be one which I doubt the money will flow very freely in. One positive maybe that you won’t be inundated with tv ads, etc.

You obviously have never passed a petition requiring several hundred...much less thousand...signatures.

It is much harder than it sounds.

I don't understand if they turned in fewer than required signatires or if several were disqualified...which would be suspicious, IMO.

I wonder if they had same signatures on more than one petition. Seems that wouldn't be allowed.

VA appears to have a difficult process.

Still, its stunning that Paulbots were organized enough to get it done.
Who’d a thunk it? What with all the dope smokin and such?

Yea, but that means Romney will pick up all the VA delegates.

Won’t really matter unless the delegate count is within 49 votes for one candidate over the other. Out of some 2288 votes I suspect they’ll not miss 49. We’ll see soon enough.

For primaries write-in votes are not counted. In the general election the presidential and VP candidates must declare themselves to be write-in candidates to be counted.

It’s hard for me to believe that around 2,000 signatures were disqualified. I don’t recall anything like this ever happening in a GOP primary. Strange.

And further, the governor of the state has all but endorsed Romney in the primary, and has been rumored to be a top Romney VP pick. Stranger.

I hope Perry’s people don’t just take this nonsense. Time to fight!

You don’t require the candidates to have a valid BC...but people who sign a petition do? ;)

Well, I’d like to be, but the web site is broken. They send out media advisories (I’ve managed to get on their media list), but that isn’t necessarily the first information we’ll see. I’m reading some of the blogs, because I would hope some blogger is involved in the counting, except that being christmas nobody really wanted to show up for the counting. I certainly wasn’t going down to Richmond for the day.

There is a definite advantage to having run before. Ron Paul is also experienced in that area. You just can’t wing it like Newt and Perry seem to be doing.

If true, then it is a dumb move on Newt’s part.

Not just 10K, 10K unique and verifiable signatures. Except in Wisconsin of course. :’)
