Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry failed to submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the Virginia primary ballot, state GOP officials said Friday evening.
Perrys campaign told state election officials it had submitted 11,911 signatures, but a Virginia Republican familiar with the situation said that the Texas governor did not submit the required 10,000.
Earlier Friday, the Republican Party of Virginia certified former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.) to appear in the March ballot.
Four candidates Romney, Perry, Paul and former House speaker Newt Gingrich turned in thousands of signatures by the deadline. State party officials are spending the day certifying the signataries.
They have not examined Gingrichs signatures yet, but expected to do so by late Friday night.
Candidates had until 5 p.m. to collect 10,000 signatures from across the state, including 400 from each congressional district.
Republican presidential candidates Michele Bachmann, Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum did not submit signatures, according to state GOP officials

“All the states should have their primary on the same day.”
Agreed. The physical limits of being able to campaign in only place are long gone. Make the campaigns virtual, and set them primaries on the same day. Of course, the dice are loaded by design.
Perhaps, they took a small sampling of names and found that more than 10% of the names were not valid.
In any case, Rick Perry should know that you need more than a 10% overage on a petition.
Underestimate them at your peril.
Newt’s pretty easy to spell so I guess he’ll still have a shot too. ;-)
If either one is perceived as a front-runner by the time the primary rolls around, they should be able to mount an effective write-in campaign.
Romney and Paul did awful in Virginia last time, although Romney had dropped out by then. I think it would be a huge advantage for Newt if he was the only other choice on the ballot than them. But if he doesn’t make it, then write-in campaigns for anyone else still in the race should be plausible.
Not sure if all the below actually made it on the ballot last time, but if so it’s quite bizarre that only 2 or 3 made it on this time.
Candidate Votes Percentage Delegates
John McCain 244,829 50.04% 60
Mike Huckabee 199,003 40.67% 0
Ron Paul 21,999 4.50% 0
Mitt Romney* 18,002 3.68% 0
Fred Thompson* 3,395 0.69% 0
Rudy Giuliani* 2,024 0.41% 0
Total 489,252 100% 60
Getting on the ballot in Virginia is not a trivial task. In addition to the 10k signatures from registered voters, there must be at least 400 from each of 11 congressional districts.
Outrageous. Interesting how 1100 Perry ballots just disappeared. Bet Gingrich gained 1100. Va is where Newt lives .Everyone says Newt has NO State organizations. So who got all the signatures for him?????
Wow, just getting in. So no Perry in VA? What’s the distilled analysis?
Knute hopes you are right.
No analysis yet.
Just a friday night bombing run by Wapo and ABC
Well, I guess I’m going to have to write in. Paul and Romney certainly ain’t getting my vote. Have to vote for Jamie Radtke for Senate.
Hey, these guy don't need no laces.
It's a big craze...Real cool style!
Thanks for the detail.
It certainly is lacking in the article.
Why is Virginia so difficult for the candidates?
From what I can gather, they are STILL counting signatures in Richmond. I imagine the final certification(s) will receive some news coverage. If not, I’m gonna check in-state party people to see what happened, tho they’re all probably anxious to just get back to families and holiday celebrations.
Why would he endorse the two remaining candidates who have been trying to take him out?
THe RPV sent a media advisory, so I believe it is correct that Perry is out. I haven’t seen the official explanation, just that they did not verify the required 10,000 signatures.
Could be they missed some sheets, or miscounted when they turned them in. The initial counts were provided by the submittals I believe, not an actual cursory count. So the campaign could have messed up.
What i hope we don’t learn is that there’s a folder somewhere in one of the volunteer’s car with the last 1000 signatures. That would suck (well, I suppose if it were just that, the RPV would probably vote to let them in — the legal reporting date isn’t until tuesday).
Well, I guess we’re past the first they ignore you, ridicule you and now we’re in then they fight you stage.
We’re rested and ready, let’s do it.
The RPV hasn’t issued any advisory about Newt Gingrich yet, so I don’t know if they have verified his signatures yet or not. They could have done Perry’s first.
I sure hope SOMEBODY makes it on the ballot.
