A muted House Speaker John Boehner announced today that Republicans have decided to accept a short-term extension of the payroll tax cut, preventing a hike in taxes just nine days before the tax break expires for 160 million Americans.
House GOP leaders appeared to be adopting a compromise suggested by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to pass the two-month extension in exchange for the Senate appointing members to a conference committee, which will negotiate a longer-term solution. The proposal won a nod of approval from President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
But Boehner was visibly unhappy with the deal.
"Kicking a can down the road for a couple of months does cause problems," he said at a news conference today.
House Republicans had originally wanted a one-year extension but faced mounting pressure from conservatives and their Senate counterparts to come to an agreement on the short-term deal.
"Sometimes it's politically difficult to do the right thing," Boehner said.

Dead on correct. The Senate “deal” included 1.)extension of unemployment comp 2.) requiring the presentdent to decide on the pipeline in 60 day (which he won’t do, and therefore skate on that part of the lousy deal) 3.) prevention of a reduction in Medicare payments to physicians beginning Jan 1- the early start of obamacare,,,,and the coup de grace— the two month “extension” (ie w/in the 60 days obama is to decide on the pipeline) of the payroll tax withholding for FICA/SS and Medicare.
The fact is the “FICA tax cut”, while putting very little money on the street (to a limited number of people), it also is further eroding the supposed funding of Medicare and SS from current worker payroll (an erosion made all the worse by the fact there are many unemployed, and thus less funding as well).
All in all this points out how disgusting democrats are— they STILL have not presented a budget and defeated obamas completely. The country is headed for Cloward Piven breakdown and the democrats are eager for it. Repubs must show some fortitude—and call them on all this— the jobs, the ruination of SS (a sacred cow that must be fed), and obamacare. They should direct the language—”we were glad to cave in to prevent the American people from having to return to living in caves when the democrats get done.”
Well nobama will get to Hawaii in time to celebrate Christmas.
I’ve defended Boehner up to now. No more. This was sheer foolishness.
Sarah Palin and Marco Rubio with the Tea Party behind them.
Take everything.
Take the House.
About 40 more seats would give us a Tea Party Speaker.
That’s very doable.
Boehner and McConnell have got to go and real soon.
this could turn out to be a good deal.
What a bunch of butt holes. This entire ‘leadership’ team has absolutely no sense of ‘leadership’. They are one big waste. Not even earning an honest day’s pay for their roles. Good grief, I would trade away their seats and political careers away to RATs, in return for one honest conservative LEADER!
I believe the tzars will go because they are so visible but the others stay. Drip by drip by drip until today we find there no America or constitution.
Not a bad analysis. Makes more sense now.
It looks like you stand alone on this one. I don't think this will be a bad deal, necessarily, but that is contingent on what happens in the next couple of months. Most non-FR folks won't remember this past this weekend, if they were even paying attention. But the GOP leadership's track record is not a very good one, so I don't think there is a reason to be hopeful.
This never should have gotten to the point for us to cave on anything. They should have just passed a clean bill and got it over with from the very start - it wasn’t the right battle to wage at this time, and they played right into the Democrats’ hands. Obama’s approval numbers improved, and they gave him an opening he couldn’t create for himself to increase his stature. This was totally ridiculous. They completely lost control of the dialog and this time the MSM didn’t even have to assist with any bias - they just flubbed it themselves.
I notice they waited until Rush went on Christmas vacation.
IMO the dims want to keep this in the news ... what better way than to have to vote on it every couple of months, continually reminding their followers that they are looking out for the little guy.
They are also attaching poison pills to these revotes so the GOP has to drag their feet, vote against etc. Our guys need to be explaining the dim strategy to the electorate - how costly and time consuming, if nothing else, it is to deal with this several times a year.
They don’t of course. Or the media is spiking our side of it.

Also need to be hitting that the same little guys will not qualify for as much in benefits because they aren’t paying as much into ss.
Blame this on Mitch McConnell for cavingin the senate. He set Boehner up on this deal.
I’m glad they “caved”
Here’s why:
“I am in favor of cutting taxes under any circumstances and for any excuse, for any reason, whenever its possible.” - Milton Friedman.
TAXES ARE TOO HIGH. I don’t care who is proposing a tax cut — even if it’s coming from the devil himself — count me as a supporter. The idea that the GOP was ever opposed to payroll tax cut was INSANE!
The removal of the FICA contribution through payroll decuction should have never been called a “tax cut”. It should have been captioned
US Quits FICA Payroll Deductions
Your contribution to your social security will no longer be taken out of your paycheck..... and construct the story from that viewpoint
But you see the whores in the media and its camp followers on the talk show circut some subbing for the big names did not approach it that way.
Shove their own words back at them whenever possible.
