Google "Romney's Mormon problem" and you'll receive thousands of references to what the conventional wisdom says is the Republican presidential candidate's greatest liability among his party's largest voting bloc, religious conservatives.
In the eyes of many Christians, Mitt Romney's Mormon faith is incompatible with Christian theology.
Ironically, however, Romney can reassure skeptical Christian conservatives by stressing his Mormon values. That's because Mormonism is strongly associated with conservative positions on social issues such as abortion and marriage -- the very issues that are the greatest source of doubt about Romney among religious conservatives.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Romney has been downplaying his faith for most of his public life. Romney's 2007 "Faith in America" speech was meant to alleviate concerns that his religion would influence his governing.
Clearly, though, much of the public still associates the former Massachusetts governor primarily with his faith.
When the Washington Post and Pew Research Center recently asked a random sample of more than 1,000 Americans what one word they associate with Romney, "Mormon" was cited more than three times as often as any other.
Romney's faith resurfaced as a campaign issue in October when an evangelical pastor supporting Texas Governor Rick Perry declared Mormonism a cult and Romney "a non-Christian."
But religious conservatives' real problem with Romney is not his faith. (In fact, polls suggest Democrats are more likely than Republicans to view Mormonism negatively.) Rather, it's his shifting positions on marriage and the sanctity of human life.

No one is talking about his religion except Democraps- and why do we care what they think?
Too bad he’s a “Jack Mormon” on those social issues, huh?
The mormons were certainly his most loyal supporters on F.R., accusing anyone who pointed out Romney’s socialist voting record and statements of being bigots.
I understand mormon groups were also used to get-out-the-vote for Romney.
Having such a pre-organized, motivated, group of people behind him has certainly helped Romney, financially and at an organizational level.
Mormons are DESPISED by the Hollywood left and media.
Let Mitt have the nomination and the laws allowing people to kill them in the 19th century will look like the good old days compared to what the left will throw at them.
“..But religious conservatives’ real problem with Romney is not his faith..”
::::::::::::::::::
Exactly. It is his liberalism. In spite of my issues with the Mormon faith, my problems with Romney have NOTHING to do with it. If Romney were a steady, true Reagan fighting conservative, I would be carrying his banner down the main street in Salt Lake City. But he is not. We know that.
Everyone will make their own choice for the Repub candidate — but my choice will not be based on religion. The only problem I have with religion right now is in a White House that thinks the Taliban is not our enemy....nuff said.
The same crap was raised in the 1960’s about Kennedy and his Catholic background influencing decision making process.
It is remarkable how the nation hasn’t progressed in religious tolerance in 50 years.
Same crap / different century
And to answer the question ,...no , I am not LDS !
Funny how the dems didn't mind Obama's years with Rev. Wright and his muslim back ground. Even the GOP elite didn't want to touch that. Too bad because it bit everyone on the butt, especially the Jews who cared about Israel but still voted for the One.
A person's religion matters.
If that's true, has it also helped Jon Huntsman? If not, why not? Some might say that Huntsman is more faithful than Romney.
I watched a little bit of Romney on Charlie Rose yesterday afternoon.
I finally caught what might have been troubling me for months about Mitt.
NO MATTER the topic, Mitt answers/poses with a smile on his face, like a beauty contestant.
Some topics are not topics to smile about. Yet, his smarmy little smile never leaves his face.
Too slick by half...like a salesman . I don’t trust him.
Not really. Huntsman blew it by saying he was "more spiritual than religious." Also, Huntsman doesn't have the not-made-public-but-still-there endorsement and backing from the Borg Cube, aka church hierarchy. Romney does. The most obvious indication of that is to pay attention to local Utah media, which is largely controlled and/or outright owned by the LDS church. Huntsman isn't even mentioned. It's all Romney, all the time.
The first is made of those who don't like his religion. They believe that a Romney presidency will promote Mormonism, which they believe is a cult.
The second is made up of those who don't like his liberalism.
Curious thing is that even though Mormonism is an essentially a conservative faith morally and economically, Romney is not really a “good Mormon” He supports abortion, gay rights and big government. Those who don't like his liberalism would probably like him more if he really was a more faithful Mormon because at least then he would be more conservative. But if he were a more devout Mormon, then those who worry about his Mormonism would have greater reason to be concerned. With this situation, I don't see a Mormon advantage at all.
Too bad hes a Jack Mormon on those social issues, huh? [2ndDivisionVet]
Well, this is what is unusual. Romney got 94% of the Mormon vote in Utah and Nevada -- despite Romney's total "off the reservation" stance flops on abortion through the years.
It's almost like Mormons don't care about conservative social issues.
And that's exactly what the Utah exit polls showed last time Romney ran.
A Feb '08 Salt Lake Trib article says that Utah voters bucked the national trend then -- which focused on issues -- and instead voted for Romney based upon "personal qualities." (That was Mormon talk for "he's a fellow Mormon")
So here 94% of Mormons were voting for religious reasons (or primarily so)...yet they turn around and lecture others not to vote for religious reasons.
Can you say two-faced hypocrisy?
You've made the assertion. Prove it. I'm LDS and not a Romney supporter. He only gets my vote if the choice is Romney or Obama in November.
the laws allowing people to kill them in the 19th century
__________________________________________
When the Mormons murdered Christians during the 19th Century and tried to assasinater Gov boggs of Missouri, no law “allowed” them to do so...
Although the Mormons had their own “Sharia Law” to kill “infidels” in Utah Territory, the United States never sanctioned such a thing...
and although the Mormons swore blood oaths in their temple rituals to kill “infidels” they changed that a few years ago...
so I have no idea what you are posting about..
The Mormons would have liked to have a law to kill Christians throughout the country, but they never got one..
That extermination policy/doctrine the Mormon had against Christians in Missouri worked against them and they had to leave themselves..
Mormons are DESPISED by

God has things to say about His enemies in the Bible..
Romney is not a “jack mormon” Romney is a temple worthy mormon. Only 15% of all mormons are given this status. It is the highest of the high, in mormonISM.
His views are not out of alignment with SLC lds.
